thinking of buying 370z, then GTM turbo's , but overheat issues, oil issues ??
I'm no stranger when it comes to Z's. I previously had a 2003 350z, and had it ssetup pretty nice. I did not have anything done to the motor because it was a lease. I enjoyed the car alot. I ended up trading the car in to buy my wife a new car. I'm also no stranger to engine building / forced induction. I previously have rebuilt a supra engine, civic engine etc.... I had a supra turbo, old 94 civic supercharged running 12.1 in the quarter etc.... It was fun when i was a little younger, and had more time / energy on my hands to build/ tinker with car stuff etc... But unfortunately, I'm a lil older now (36), and my body cant handle the hours of building / installing/ tuning etc... it takes to get a reliable setup, especially if its on a new car. i dont want to blow the motor/headgasket, etc...
I recently joined the 370z site and its great, and was thinking of getting a 370z and then turbo(ing) it thru GTM. couple ?'s Has the oil heat issue been resolved with the 370z ? and is there/ was there a overheating issue also ? And lastly, does GTM do good work, and how much would it run to add a TT setup for the 370z ? thanks guys, oh btw , heres a shot of my ol 350z, i miss the car, it was pretty nice looking. http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/918/img2213f.jpg |
The oil temp issue was solved by adding an oil cooler, it's also not an issue unless you plan on running at high speeds, high rpm in high heat.. like on track days. As for cost of the GTM, I'm not sure you could check their website.. The guys I've seen talking about them on the forum seem happy with their work.

Someone to talk to soon will be FuszNissan, he currently has a car with GTM having a TT added. But until he gets it back nothing really new going on.
Oil issue, not an issue on the street, if you add a TT I would go ahead and add an oil cooler and you will be fine. |
has the dealer added an oil cooler for any newer models ?
also, someone said something about an overheating problem. Have you guys had a problem with overheating at all. I also had to have my tranny replaced on my 2003, @ 14,000 miles, 3rd gear would grind everytime, with clutch depressed too. |
A couple people have had grinding in a few gears and had the trannys replaced, no questions from Nissan.
Oil cooler seems to be something Nissan is avoiding so they can say the car is not intended for track use. |

the problem can be resolved by getting the factory nissan motorsports oil cooler kit or one of any aftermarket kits or making your own oil cooler setup... a little searching here and you will uncover many varieties of solutions that have all been tried successfully... if you plan to TT or track extensively look for a very beefy core or a dual core setup like I have GTM has an impeccable reputation, so far as I know... as does forged performance and a number of other vendors on this board... recommend you call sharif at forged for an unbiased viewpoint on your upgrade options and FI options good luck |
Overheating is not the problem, car going into protect mode and reducing top RPM is what happens. I haven't seen anyone actually overheat the engine, just put it in protect mode when the oil temp hits 280 degrees.
|
^^+1...and I've yet to hear of someone going into the limp (protect) mode while driving on the street.

Any members on this forum have a boosted 370Z and driving it at the moment that could chime in?

zsurvey ... we had 30 of 115 ish filling out this survey that have been 280+ or limp mode. Last time we sliced/diced the data we found a significant number of folks that had never tracked their cars but still hit limp mode... hence my comments above regarding driving on steep gradients / hot climates / etc |
Survey says 13 (not 30) actually went into limp mode. The other 17 say oil temperature got above 260 F (not 280+) but didn't put themselves in the "yes, more than once, car went into limp mode" category. Also survey doesn't ask those 13 respondents if they were on the street or on the track.

And yes the survey does ask what conditions they drive in. Last time I checked we had 4 people hit limp mode with road only driving and 14 hit over 260F. That was out of 73 responding at the time. What now? you've got the data... still going to make excuses ? your next logical reply is to discredit the data... go for it IN WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS HAVE YOU DRIVEN YOUR Z? (check all that apply) Frequency Analysis Answer Count Percent 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% 1. All out (90+%) at the track 8 4.02% 2. Casual at the track 14 7.04% 3. All out on the road and/or driving over very steep grades 23 11.56% 4. Sporty driving on the road and/or driving over some steep grades 74 37.19% 5. Normal driving on the road 80 40.20% Total 199 100% http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/u...psurveyn73.gif |
Nobody knows how reliable the VQ37VHR is with boost.
The huge FMIC won't be helping the cooling issues either. |
According to the chart above, no ATs ever hit limp mode in any condition. Too bad you can't TT AT.

It's not that hitting limp mode is the problem. Even if you don't hit limp mode, 260+ is definitely not good for the engine and that is definitely an attainable range via prolonged streetdriving in traffic in summer climates.
