Exhaust Pop?

I was driving aggressively this morning and I heard what I thought was a pop coming from the stock Nismo exhaust after letting off the throttle. I cannot be sure if it came from my car or if it was some other noise on the road. I didn't think the stock exhaust was aggressive enough to make popping or gurgling sounds. Does anyone else experience these sounds from the stock exhaust?

olddudesrule 08-22-2013 10:03 PM

The popping sound I think you're referring to is caused by unburned fuel getting past the combustion chamber and igniting inside the exhaust pipe. I got it a lot in my old Viper and Z06, both of which had aftermarket cams. Usually occurred while decelerating on a down shift. Never had it occur with my Nismo (stock).

nogoodname 08-22-2013 10:05 PM

It could be just back pressure related and I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. When I had a single 3" exhaust with oem cats, it amplified it. Whenever I went WOT then let off, there would be a lot of gurgling and popping noises.

ive heard it once or twice on my car too. i think it sounds cool :)

With my setup right now I hear it all the time.. and yes, it sounds like a race car!! Everyone comments how awesome it sounds.. I love it.

I took off the rear muffler and have that sound all the time with the gurgling sound. It makes panties drop :icon23:

Watch any road-racing series (Grand Am, American Lemans, etc.) especially at night.
All cars do it. It's normal unless of course it becomes a monstrous boom.

NickTurnon 08-23-2013 02:34 PM

I pop all the time with stock cats and short tails! I love it! But i don't like too much of it.

tlr3715 08-23-2013 09:21 PM

Yeah I know it's not a bad noise. I've heard it on my Z28 Camaro and Firebird Formula after letting off the throttle after hard acceleration. I was just surprised to hear it on the Nismo. Thought it would be too restrictive.

Very glad to hear the noise, have much more respect for the exhaust :)

you tend not to hear it with the stock muffler but if you did aam short tails or something, you will hear the car pop like no tomorrow, completely normal

chii370 10-09-2013 08:06 AM

My dts pops and snarls every single time i decel, like clock work. So now i find myself downshifting a lot for stop lights instead of just putting the clutch in JUST so i can hear it sound like a bad ***.

its also better for the tranny to downshift instead of coasting to the light in neutral.

Sry unrelated to OP post..... but fuct u reminded me of a question ive wanted to ask a LONG TIME. Related to the answer u just gave. Awhile back we all know this car has a serious CSC /masterC problem. That being said not EVERYONE has had it. My question is, how do u drive ur z? Do u hold the clutch the whole time at a red light? Do u down shift on way to stops? Do u take it out of gear while stopped? Do u baby engage the clutch or fast shift? I honestly believe there is a 100% connection between some of these, and premature csc failure. Mainly for those who constantly hold the clutch down or stay in gear at stop lights, signs, and traffic. I did that in my 09 and it failed. Now i dont do that anymore and my 13 hasnt failed yet and im past my 09s miles.....so far so good? I try not to engage the clutch AT ALL until im ready to make the car move. And i used to baby the clutch a lot, now i try to make engagement as short as possible without being rough with it.

One of the things i miss from my wrx :shakes head:

You should hear mine on downshifts. :D Catch a downshift at about 4 grand in any gear. As it unwinds, it gives to two pops as the rpm drops to about 3 grand. :D With the FI LTH's, 12" resonators and FI cbe. It's music.

I abuse the crap out of mine. If it's going to die, then let it. I'll replace place it with something better. :D I would have it fail under warranty now then later.

Wonka2581 10-14-2013 10:10 PM

Hell I wished mine poped like the exhaust on the new F-Type  I love the way hat thing sounds...

Agreed. The sooner it dies, the sooner you can replace with the HD CSC! :)

chii370 10-15-2013 08:20 AM

That F type was the reason i bought the ark DTS. No ****. It sounded MOST like it than any other aftermarket exhaust i could find. Its very VERY close but not quite the same.... but that POP POP gurgle gurlge grrrr noise on decel is almost spot on and i absolutely love it. 1 complaint though, it sounds 100% different inside the car than it does outside. Still deep, but it seems more like a single tone without individual exhaust puffs. But when you get behind it it sounds like a v8 with deep individual exhaust tones. Weird. But at least i get to hear it when in a tunnel or with the *** end parked against a building :p

chii370 10-15-2013 08:24 AM

U cant go by vids. Ive seen some exhaust vids and thought OMFG THAT SOUNDS LIKE 5HIT!! and then heard it irl and it sounds great. And others i thought sounded amazing in a video sound like rotten a55hole irl. I did a LOT of research before buying the ark, online and listening to G's and Z's people own irl. But its funny u mentioned the f type, that was my inspiring goal.

L33T Z34 03-11-2014 05:14 AM
