which brand of oil cooler?
Hello everyone just picked up a brand new 2011 Red Nismo couple weeks back, soo far love the car, really cant drive it enough.
Well I have a track weekend coming up in August at Roebling Road and I am very aware of the oil cooler being a requirement, just not sure as to which brand I should be looking at, was hoping too see what most of you guys use. And also what kind of price I should be looking at for the install. Thanks! |
south florida, tracking i'd get a big one. 34 row.
I'd recommend the z1 oil cooler. Ive had mine over a year with no issues. On a hot track day i didnt break 225. |
/\ big +1 on the Z1 oil cooler (see sig). Don't foget to get it w/thermostatic plate.
PS--at Zcon track day this past week, our Z didn't go much over 240 deg. for oil temp. PS--welcome aboard OP, oh and the Aug Roebling track day you're going to, is it the Flat Out motorsports one? If so, my wife will be there with our Z. |
Thank you guys for the advice, and yes the event is the Flatout motorsports event. Looks like its going to be a great turn out. Anyone know a website to get a good price on that Z1 oil cooler?

Looking forward to meeting you at Roebling!!!!!!!! Its looking like it will be a really fun weekend, plus with you and Juno there, I finally won't be the only 370 at the track. |
Ya it should be an absolute blast! I think i might have met you mike actually when I went to road atlanta back in june, I owned the red s2000 was with my father and some other friends.

Don't mean to thread jack or anything, but I am debating between 25row and 34row. I did ask daisuke about the z1 34row oil cooler before. Now my question is, if I get a 34row, I know if the oil is too cold that is not good right? So, what about during Winter? last time I went to Willow Springs track in January, temps there were 24 degrees early in the morning. Will cold situation like that will negatively effect my car because of the cold oil with 34 row cooler? sorry if it's confusing.

As far as whether or not to get the 25 or 35 row. I always say, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. |

So does the 34-row fit in behind the GTM intercooler? That is the burning question for me..... </Thead-jack_2> |

Anyways check out the link in my sig for a for block plate to use in the winter months and cooler days. Easy and fun to play with adjustment wise to get the right temps for cooler and warmer days. Just remove for the track days and spirted driving. |
Ok i have decided to go with Z1 but just not sure which size i should go with, i would go with the 34r but later on down the road i might want to get the stillen gen3 and from what i read the gen3 will not work so well with the 34r. Will i be ok with the 25r on the track? And will the 25 work with the gen3?

Wow thats awesome news! looks like I will be making my order for the oil cooler tonight. thank you all for the great advice.
|
I am going to start with the GTM 25 row and SC supplement kit... if that isn't enough I will look into the dual cooler kit and some other cooling upgrades... fingers crossed
|
During ZdayZ on the dragon I was getting 240+ with no oil cooler and it was only ~65-70 degrees outside in the morning. :icon14:
I installed the 19 row with non thermostatic plate (Z1 kit). Knocked ~20 degrees off spirited driving temps. Did autocross yesterday as part of the ZCON event. A friend from out of town drove my car as well. We did 24 runs with outside temps of >95 degrees! Temp never got over ~225! :happydance: At first I was a little worried about getting the non thermostatic plate but living in Savannah Georgia (and talking to Z1) and seeing the results I am more than happy. If I had gotten a cooler larger than 19 row I would have definitely gotten the thermostatic plate. Best money I have spent on the car yet. |
Soo i had the cooler for about a week and a half everything was good oil temps around 180. Was driving home tonight and I heard a weird noise, then my oil light came on and the car almost lost control. I quickly came to a stop and huge fumes of smoke started pouring out from the engine bay. I turned the car off and noticed oil everywhere on the road behind me, all over my wheels and all over the engine.. meanwhile oil was still pouring out all over the ground while the car was stopped. Going to have the car towed to the shop I had install it in the morning and figure out what the problem is.
Anyone have an idea what happend? Has anyone else had a problem like this with the Z1 Motorsports Oil cooler or any other oil coolers? Any help here would be great! thanks |

So are you positive it's the cooler itself? Who did the install? I know when I received my kit from GTM one of the 45 degree AN fitting was tight but not tight enough for it had a very small leak (very mild). So I tighten it down about another 3/4 of a turn and been good since. So basically check the fittings before install them also.

cannot say ive heard really of anything like that. The huge fumes of smoke make me think its not coming from the oil cooler as the oil cooler itself wouldnt smoke Did you check where the oil was pouring out from? perhaps lift the hood to see what it looked like underneath? there was a member whos oil line i believe came loose onetime but it didnt esesntially blow into fumes. |
wow this thread went from preventative measures to horrible problem quick...
best of luck OP |

^word. Plus I want to know my car inside and out. I want a shop asking me what I have going on. Not the other way around.
|
I want people who are holding off on Z1, or any other cooler, to remember that there are more than a couple of us tracking regularly without issue.
The appeal of the Z1 kit for me was that it has all of the fittings and brackets that you need. Made specifically to fit our Zs with good instructions. You don't have to be a mechanic to install it. Took me about three hours (working slow). |

Curious as to what the cause of that problem is tho. |
The car was towed to Performance Race Solutions where the cooler was installed. They have been in contact directly with Z1 and the issue appears to be a fitting on one of the oil lines. I am trying to stay out of the finger pointing but I am comfortable that the manufacturer and the installer plan to resolve the issue to my satisfaction. The part in question is being shipped back and a replacement is on the way. Whether it was defective or installed incorrectly may be difficult to know for sure and I am not attempting to bring any negative press to anyone. So far this issue has only cost me towing charges and I hope the remainder is worked out between the two parties.

What still worries me is that the oil light came on? But sounds as if it may of lost pressure but there was plenty of oil to keep things good for that moment. But what was the sound you heard? Are you saying the line came out from the fitting?
|
OZShifter88,
I apologize for the issue with our kit. From speaking with the guys at Performance Race Solutions, we will be replacing the line as "defective" and will be consulting with our manufacturer about the failure. This is a highly unusual type of failure and one that I am interested in investigating further once I recieve the line. I have pulled all oil cooler lines off of the shelf this morning and personally inspected each of their fittings. All lines on the shelf are correct and free of any defects. I will be speaking with our guys in Receiving on Monday and will be adding a few more points to our QC Check List for the Z1 370Z/G37 Oil Cooler Kit. |
Big props Dustin.
But I'd like to state to everyone and anyone that things like this can happen. They hardly ever happen but you can't always take it for granted that it won't. This is modding. But this could of been much worse. Props to the OP for getting his motor turn off quickly. Unfortunately this type of mishap can cause bad things. Of course if the motor blew I would of removed the cooler and then take it to the dealer. Hehe. |
