New NISMO owner & disappointed in Nissan overall UPDATED

EDIT
Update - Nissan NA corrected my problem with a new NISMO body kit and allowed me to pick another dealer to complete the repair. I found someone who took the bull by the horns and went to great lengths to make the situation right. I have a bad taste regarding the original dealer, but that is life.

A long read, but interesting to any NISMO owner.

Preface
This 2011 370Z NISMO is my first Nissan. My parents had a 1987 Nissan Sentra that ran until the wheels fell off. I purchased the 370 for a variety of reasons such as curb appeal, HP, and the Nissan reputation as a whole.

However, I am extremely disappointed in the car and Nissan. After owning the car for less than 3 weeks and 800 miles, the paint on the rear passenger side bumper started rolling up and peeling off. I called the dealer and emailed pictures. After several days, the service manager said Nissan had agreed to "take care of it."

During that timeframe, the paint on the front bumper and driver side skirt started rolling up and peeling off too. So when I show up at the dealer, the service manager tried to say it was dirt. After peeling off the paint with my finger nail, he did agree that more parts were defective. Essentially it appears as though the entire NISMO kit paint is defective. The service manager told me I had to call Nissan CS and log a case. So I call Nissan and 3 days later they call back and say "we will take care of it but we have to get the Corporate Office to approve it." It has been 72 hours and I still have not heard what they are doing to take care of it.

So today, I stop by a Nissan body shop that was near my work and this is what a paint technician said when he saw the car. "They did not put the flex agent in the paint." Upon closer inspection he said the parts did not appear to have even been primered. He said this was a common problem on the NISMO editions. He said the NISMOS's ship over with unpainted kits. He did not elaborate on who, how, when, and where the parts are painted but he said the body kit parts do not come from the factory painted.

That does not make sense to me, but can anyone confirm or deny that? I know if you buy the kit it comes unpainted but does the actual NISMO edition have to be painted somewhere stateside?

This whole mess is extremely irritating. Instead of enjoying a new car, I have one with paint peeling off in several areas and I do not even have my permanent tags on it yet.

The pictures only show the rear bumper but you get the idea. What would you do in my sh*tuation?

Have you personally contacted CA about this?

ChrisSlicks 06-30-2011 04:59 PM

The plastic parts are painted on a separate line at different times (and quite likely a different place) to the rest of the sheet metal. I don't think they primer the plastic but instead use additives to help make the paint bond to the plastic (lack of primer is part of the reasons the colors don't match great). Pretty sure all the panels are on the car before it leaves Japan, local assembly is very minor (floor mats, kick plates etc). It does look like there was a bad paint run on the plastics, quite likely that it affected multiple cars.

You'll be better than new if you get the plastics repainted, they will actually match!

It sucks it happens but the key is how Nissan handles it. I know that mistakes happen. On my Volvo with 6,000 miles, they did the free maintenance. The tech wasn't paying attention and opened the hood with a tool in his hand leaving a indention in my paint and didn't realize it. It took me 2 days while drying my car off to notice it.

The dealership never tried to accuse me of the damage and fixed it like new. Did it cost me time yes but I make mistakes also. It is how they are handled no different than warranty work.

Nissan should repaint the parts and give you a demo 370Z or something nice to drive while they are doing it. On the bright side it was caught early and not after the warranty is over.....

Yes, I opened a case as requested by the dealership Service Manager. The agent called me and said she had to get the repair approved through the Nissan Corporate Office. I am still waiting on Nissan to make a decision.

ChrisSlicks
I had not thought about the paint matching better. I like that aspect.

sboden
I would agree on how Nissan responds but so far everyone involved has passed the ball. The salesperson passed to the Service Manager, who passed to Nissan Customer Service, who passed to the Nissan Corporate Office. I guess I do not have the patience for the delays on a new car that has an obvious defective paint process on the plastic parts.

Thanks for the replies.

this is shitty dude justice will be served hope everything works out for you

Rooskey 06-30-2011 11:16 PM

The same thing happened to my rear bumper cover. I took it to the dealership and they fixed it with no questions asked.

Ridgerunner 07-01-2011 12:44 AM

With no perm plates on it yet, they ought to give you a new one. Hell you gotta be killing Nissan sales for anybody looking at that car. They should want it off the street as soon as possible. Ya got nothing to lose, tell them you want another new one or you are gonna post it to every lemon web site on the net.

iceman21_23 07-01-2011 02:40 AM

ridgerunner obviously you don't understand how lemon laws work. Anyways i don't see the issue here, as far as how Nissan is handling it. Yes, it shouldn't have happened in the first place but they are doing everything to rectify the issue at hand.

fuct 07-01-2011 07:53 AM

now this is a long shot here fellas..... buuuut do you think becasue of the disaster in Japan right now they may be shipping the panels here to get painted. maybe the area or place they paint at was messed up or off line. they said they were focusing on the lower priced cars anyways. just a thought.

Mike 07-01-2011 08:13 AM

Just my guess, but they probably get painted at the port of entry. The body kit might be too low for tie downs on the ship, so they add the kit once it arrives.

I only say this because I worked at the port of entry in Jacksonville while in college occassionally and the processor painted all of the front air dams for the incoming 6 series BMWs at the port and installed them, and things like radios and other accessories in the port facility.

MacCool 07-01-2011 08:24 AM

My recent experience with Nissan Consumer Affairs on my wife's Murano (dealer jerking her around a little on a faulty tire sensor) was that they are effective and aggressive. On that minor issue, CA really put the spurs to the dealer.

Had a similar experience with them 33 years ago - problems on my new 280Z with injectors fouling (lead). They ultimately made the dealer replace the whole system with one they pulled from a vehicle on the floor then kept calling me for months to make sure it was working well (in those problematic early days of their brand-new implementation of fuel injection, they recommended frequent use of GM Top Engine Cleaner). Ultimately, using unleaded gasoline as it became more available solved that problem.

daisuke149 07-01-2011 05:53 PM

take it to a dealer get them to repaint it.

I had my bumpers and side skirts repainted under warranty due to the colors not matching well.

nogoodname 07-01-2011 06:00 PM

This is a good chance to get the front painted well with multiple coats of paint and clear... so it wont chip as easily as OEM does!!! Hope it all works out for you.

zinistr 07-11-2011 03:45 PM

The body kits on the Nismo are fitted in Japan - painted. Autech is the firm that does the retrofitting to produce the NISMO Z.

Unfortunately, this is the way it is with most corporations. Each level of employee only has so much power. I know it's frustrating, but try not to let it sour the experience of owning a NISMO Z. Like someone said above... At least your paint will match better!

wind.zero 07-12-2011 12:28 PM

^^^
I am working on staying positive about the experience in general.

After a week of waiting on Nissan CA, they punted back to the dealer. The agent said this was a warranty repair and to contact the dealer. She was not sure why I was told to call Nissan since the car was practically new.

So after a month of being told to contact someone else, I am back to where I started. It took the dealer several days to reply, but I have an appointment in 2 weeks to have the NISMO kit repainted.

I understand that the dealer was probably just trying to CYA on the warranty repair on paint.

Synack 07-12-2011 12:56 PM

You just got unlucky man. Nissan is generally not like this at all.

vividracing 07-12-2011 01:31 PM

Man that is pretty lame. At least you're getting the car sorted out. After a few thousand miles of enjoying it, you'll forget all about this :)

torpedo2k 07-12-2011 01:32 PM

Mine isnt like this and it matches really well. New paint is in your future...

Good luck!

MarkeZ 07-14-2011 01:27 AM

wind.zero I see you're from Plano, TX. Which Nissan body shop did you take your car to? I hope you're not taking it to Trophy in Mesquite. That is where my car is right now getting the rear bumper repaired after a small fender bender. I have nothing but bad experience from them regarding their quality of work. I just want to give you a heads up to avoid any more headaches.

wind.zero 08-28-2011 12:29 PM

EPIC FAILURE

So I finally get my car back from the Nissan dealer after having the NISMO kit repainted under warranty because of the peeling. I actually did not think the paint FUBAR could be worse but it is.

One
After having the car back 2 weeks, the front and rear bumpers are already peeling again where the seams meet the other body work. I do not know if this is a design flaw or piss poor painting. Either way, a new car with factory paint or a body shop respray should not be peeling.

Two
The color match is not even close. At some angles in the day light it kind of matches ok. But in the shade or at other angles it is obvious it does not match. It is almost as if the pearl is way off. I know the paint is 3 stage but it should not be impossible to match it.

But in a garage, in the shade, or at night, the color match is not even close. The match is so bad strangers at the gas station ask me when I wrecked the car. The NISMO kit is now a bright Elmer's glue white color and the rest of the car is Nissan Pearl White.

Three
Two other Nissan dealers refused to warranty the paint, but then again I do not blame them. They referred me back to the original dealer who painted the repair. To be honest I never plan on going back to the dealer for anything. The other dealers did however say it looks bad because there was no blending done. The dealer just painted the bumpers and skirts. I do not think the hatch spoiler was repainted. :shakes head:

Four
So I drive the 45 miles back to the dealer yesterday and another "manager" is supposed to look at it Monday and do something to fix my car. :ugh2:

I know PW is one of the harder colors to match, but this is a bunch of crap. So much for having a car that was one color and not peeling.

Kingbaby 08-28-2011 12:40 PM

tough start with the car...

good luck...

fuct 08-28-2011 01:50 PM

ya no peeling just crappy paint match here

roplusbee 08-29-2011 06:35 AM

Sorry to hear that dude. Guess I have been lucky so far. Then again, RED is not that difficult to come by these days...........

XxBLiNdxX 09-04-2011 06:34 PM

I had the same exact problem but got flack from the general manager and was blaming it on me. They repainted at a shop but put the wrong decals back on and off center. They also had to replace my entire engine and now i have other electrical issues. How to a open up a complaint?

Got somewhat crappy paint matching here too but not that bad. But there is a little wrinkling where the rear bumper meets the passenger side fender. No peeling yet, so will just leave it alone.

zinistr 09-05-2011 07:39 AM

Guys,

Expecting local dealers to fix a quality issue (especially if you didn't buy the car from that particular dealer) can be tough IF you haven't opened a case with Nissan.

Steps to getting quality issues resolved:

1) call 1-800-NISSAN-1, option 7 then option 3.

2) tell the customer service person you wish to "open a quality-issue case" on your Z.

3) Objectively (keep the emotion out) tell them your concerns and carefully detail what you've been through thus far to try and fix the issue. They will ask what you want from Nissan that would satisfy your situation - be realistic and specific.

4) GET YOUR CASE ID. Sometimes they'll state that you need to make an appointment first...be firm and get the case ID and set the appointment next.

5) Set the appointment with a dealer. They need to be made aware that there is a case open with Nissan. GIVE them the case number and get the appointment set.

6) A customer service person will set follow-up dates with you to check on progress. The dealer will detail everything they note on your car and send photos, etc. back to Nissan.

7) Work with them for remedy.

Also - on a side note, if you happen to be part of a local Nissan/Datsun Z car club (like those at zcca.org), join the club and get their members to contact the dealer on your behalf (peer pressure helps the dealer understand this needs solved).

This isn't that hard, I had to go through this exact process myself for a factory wheel-finish issue and Nissan's refinishing my wheels.

Good luck!

milo 09-05-2011 10:33 AM

Sucks about your paint issues, hopefully Nissan will resolve it. I wonder how many PW Nismo have this unmatched or peeling paint issues?

wind.zero 09-21-2011 02:17 PM

It took some pissing, moaning, and complaining but I have an amicable resolution. This experience leaves me with some reservations about certain dealerships and their practices, but Nissan has redeemed itself. It took some foot work, but in the end Nissan is going to take care of me.

A Nissan Technical Specialist met me the dealer who sold me the car and performed the repair. He took about 45 minutes to evaluate my paint issues. He concluded that I need a new NISMO front bumper, rear bumper, and both side skirts. He used some equipment to make his determination along with listening to my entire ordeal. He took the time to answer all of my questions and explain what had probably happened with the paint

I felt like I have fought and won a hard battle. I just hope the respray of the new kit comes out matching better. The Technical Specialist explained in great detail the process and why it was difficult to match the Pearl White. At least I should have longevity even if it does not match perfectly.

The icing on the cake is I get to pick the authorized dealer to complete the repair. I just need to do a little research to find the best facility in my area. I learned a lot about paint during this meeting.

To those who assisted me with this issue, I really appreciate the help!

fuct 09-21-2011 04:54 PM

glad your rant is over! best of luck on the respray.
