anyone else with test pipes get this.....?

I have a set of CNT resonated test pipes as my only mod, and i get this nasty black residue on the back of my nismo. im guessing the cars areodynamics are churning it up and depositing it....?no? i can wash the car and drive to dinner and bam! already a thin layer. these pics are from waiting two weeks to wash.

its not tires being eatin' up, ive had an alignment done.

anyone else? am i running stupid rich?

O_O
wow! thats a lot. I know some of it is due to the test pipes...spitting out more exhaust residue than a car with cats. But that looks extremely exessive...and it doesn't help that your cars white and it stand out that much more...

fuct 12-20-2010 02:09 PM

yea this is the worst ive had it pictured above. sux because i keep her really clean....

SE 12-20-2010 02:22 PM

Mine is pretty bad also..not as noticeable as yours though due to my PG paint. I'm running LTH + resonator deletes. It's normal.

Jordo! 12-20-2010 03:39 PM

Check for exhaust leaks just after the primary O2's. A leak near them can cause readings to skew lean, seriously raise positive fuel trims, and result in you running rich.

Is the CEL on?

fuct 12-20-2010 04:03 PM

yea i have a check engine light, but thats just the crappy O2 sensor mounting location.

i even used grade 10 automotive bolts not the crappy ones that came with the test pipes.

i will go back under and recheck every bolt.

chops 12-20-2010 04:44 PM

eh normal..dont forget that you have white too. i have HFC's and my while thr front of my car is clean, once you see the trunk its disgusting. especially after rain! the wing shields the car from rain, and the brake dust and exhaust just sticks there.

even before i installed my HFC's the back of mine would be covered in black dust, while the rest of the car was relatively clean. thats why ive thought about installing some sort of a pull harness like most SUV's have for closing the trunk. keeps fingerprints off the hatch haha

ScGRaceR 12-21-2010 12:55 PM

daaaam dude!

Try using the trunk latch to pull down with your finger. Takes a little practice to get right but I always use it on mine.

Jamaica 12-22-2010 02:45 AM

wow thats alot. Never seen that happen before.

One_Quick_Z 12-22-2010 02:59 AM

WOW that is not normal... I have a white Z also with test pipes and exhaust and it has never got to that point, If you do not keep it clean on a regular basis that will stain the paint.

I already get a little soot back there even with just the stock exhaust... I guess this means it's a HELLS NO to test pipes for me =P

Are you sure the code is for the cat and not high fuel trims? What code is it?

Hmm. Be interesting to see what your AFR's are.

:iagree:

CBRich 12-24-2010 01:42 PM

I have the same test pipes and the soot isn't near that bad.

chops 12-24-2010 02:26 PM

like i said before, i believe the park bench on our hatches is the reason the rear end stays so dirty. the air doesnt get to sweep over the hatch like non nismo's, and the hot exhaust gases (with soot) just rise and collect under our spoilers.

you can easily see how this works when it rains...the first week i had it, it rained and the entire car was clean, minus the rear bumper/area under the spoiler...everything just loves to collect there!

One_Quick_Z 12-24-2010 03:15 PM

Yes I am willing to bet your AFR is way out of wack, that should never look like that even at its worst stage.

checked all the bolts, no leaks, reset ecu, replaced my HKS air filters with the stock ones....

same sh1t.... hmmmmm

Run it on a dyno -- see what you're putting down and what the tail pipe sniffer says.

It's possible that if you have a CEL for the catalyst, the ECU is messing with the fueling -- that will all show up on the dyno.

Well stock, I get a very, very slight film that's visible on grey. But this does not look right. I would be concerned, of carbon build up in the engine. My S2000 had a similar problem. It was evident when I had the head off. The tops of the pistons where covered in black carbon about 2-3mm thick.

Nismoracer 01-05-2011 10:07 PM

So not everyone with test pipes have this problem on the back side?

and all this carbon is from my simple resonated test pipes????? im finding it hard to believe.

so i take it a CE light is a lil more to be concerned with than just a light. i wouldnt think id have all this from something so simple.

(side note, after taking out and cleaning off the O2 sensors, repacking the opening of the sensor hole with steel wool, and resetting the ECU i noticed LESS carbon build up on my bumper)

i think i might be switching to a high flowing cat soon......

i know this happends with test pipes but why would it happen if u have resonated ones?

fuct 01-06-2011 09:25 AM

both test pipes and resonated test pipes are straight through. the resonator just helps muffle a lil noise. it does nothing to block the air coming out.

i need these!
http://www.cntracing.com/CNT_perform...i_p/celfix.htm

mimics what some of the higher end brands due. my $199 rtp's are now $270.... grrrrrrr get what you pay for i guess.

wishihadnav 01-06-2011 11:21 AM

damn thats alot of soot...i have GTM res tp's and it still doesnt get that dirty..

but i doubt you were throwing a CEL. i think that was the kicker. IT WAS messing with the fuel trim.

soooo anyone think ive done any damage running this way for 5-7k miles?

i will be adding the items i linked above.

:icon14:

wishihadnav 01-06-2011 01:41 PM

^^no i dont believe youve done any damage by running rich..i'd probably get uprev'd tuned to fix that problem.
