4th Brake light

I installed a smoked out 4th brake light yesterday and I thought that I would share the results with the community, the install took about 3hr's and was fairly easy to do, I did brake 1 clip on the back panel but it didn't make a difference once I re-installed it (thank god) my wife wouldn't let me forget it or I would need to buy a new one, anyway if anyone has any questions feel free to ask, in one of the pictures it shows the wires covered with aluminum tape, I felt that it ran really close to the muffler and shield plate, also I used black tape to wrap the wires all the way to the top sorry that I didn't take any pic's of the install I thought about it afterwards any way here are the pictures. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...psaxtkfteg.jpghttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...pspkp4z4ul.jpghttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...psckynajyt.jpghttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...pskukznuul.jpghttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...psgquyifkt.jpghttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps8xgbryop.jpg

IJDMTOY.COM the smoked lens.

Also I didn't mention in the original post that I soldered the connections I think that's a very important step that's not mentioned in the directions and
I am very happy with the quality and the price($79).

Matt, just a couple of tips to be aware of if you are doing the install your self, splicing the wires is a bit tricky, I put masking tape on the area around the car that I was working around to prevent any scratches and then I unplugged the tail light from the car (it makes it easier), I used wire strippers to notch between the area that I wanted to tap to and then an Exacto knife to slice the plastic coating, then I wrapped the 4th brake light wire around the bare tail light wires soldered them and wrapped the individual wires with black tape and then bundled the wires with more black tape and finally I zip tied it all together for a good clean fit hope this helps Tim.

Hey Tim, thanks for tips! I'll be sure to remove over of the rear lamps to make life easier for myself! I'm pretty nervous about splicing into the stock wires. Did it during a reverse camera to my 350 - they don't leave much room for error!
I'm going to look at wiring options as we need to run a fog light in the UK, but I might look at using the brighter red for both fog and brakes. Did it to my old MR2 using some diodes.

I'd done the same install immediately after purchase back in September!

I got the same one took me a little longer, installed LEDs at the same time.

Nice install, i assume the rear fender doesn't need to be removed to fit the 4th brake light ?

Nithmo 02-20-2017 05:52 PM

The rear fender is not removable. It is part of the physical car body, unlike a front fender, which can be removed.

no you don't need to remove the fender, Its a pretty easy install.

Does the white light help with visibility when backing up? Or is there no difference? I'm looking into solutions to provide more lighting while reversing, and this might be an option...

I have the non-smoked version and yes, the white LEDS do help a bit when backing up @ night...of course, I have super dark tint on my rear glass.

cooltoy 02-23-2017 05:30 PM

The red outline in ijdmtoy light goes well with the red lines on the Nismo kit.

Yes I find the extra white light makes a difference, definitely brighter. (I have a back up camera)

JDotCDot 02-26-2017 10:58 AM

Thanks RumbleFish and wildoplympic. That's good to know. I noticed that when it's pitch black outside at night the backup camera is useless with the default lights. I'll most likely give this a shot later down the road.

Edit: Just ordered it. Pretty excited to get it installed. Woo hoo!

My problem with the back up camera is that it gets water/mud on it and makes it useless, just need to keep it clean I guess. Jdot you will notice a difference with the lights, but because they are so low to the ground they don't cast a long light but they do help, and I personally like the way they look VS the reflector. If you have any questions just ask.
p.s maybe later today I will try and get a pic of the camera in use any reason to go out and play around with my precious.

Oh I totally agree! Especially with both of us being based in WA, getting mud and water spots on the camera is a common occurence :tiphat:

Thanks for all the info! And yeah, a pic would definitely be appreciated since it would give me a good idea considering we live in similar environments. (Hopefully you didn't get hit hard with snow today!)

No snow, a lot of rain for about 2 hr's still drove the Z though, hey we live in WA if you don't drive in the rain you don't drive:). Here are a couple of pictures one is with my garage door closed and if you look close you can see the bright spot in the middle barley reaches to the green lines which if I remember right is about 7 feet, the brightest area though are the yellow lines that are 3 feet, if you look at the pic from outside the car the light basically fills in the middle, if you'r looking for a huge difference no but if you are like me and back into parking spaces then yes, there is also the benefit of the red brake/driving lights which are quit bright so I have to say that the install is worth it, I spent $78 and 3 hr's of work and I am happy with the results.

JDot, did you buy the clear one or the smoked? the clear might give off more light but I preferred the smoked.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Either way, more light is better than no light!

Anyway, I got the regular red/clear one. I actually took photos of my car's rear and quickly photoshopped both options onto it and decided that the red/white light matches the pearl white paint of my car better :rofl2:

I do like the smoked one too as well. I think it matches your car better though.

JDotCDot 03-05-2017 03:08 PM

WHOA. Just finished the install. IT LOOKS AMAZING!!

Way better looking in person. It's so clean and professional. Thanks so much for the recommendation! This was an awesome mod. Definitely satisfied.

chubbs 03-05-2017 03:23 PM

Very nice mod.

Here in the UK that light has to be a bright red fog lamp. Personally I use it for two purposes:

1. As a fog lamp.

2. As a 'Get off my arse, you dumbfuck small hatchback tailgater' lamp.

It performs both functions very well.

Roadster Fog Light Replacement

6 Attachment(s)
Installed the iJDMTOY rear tail/brake/reverse lights in my 2016 roadster this weekend. I opted for the smoked lens version. Just personal preference over the red. There are plenty of other posts on this forum with pics and videos on this install which were very helpful to look at before I started. I also felt no need to duplicate that effort, so I didn’t take my own pics of the process. And please, SOLDER ALL CONNECTIONS! The two minutes of your life it takes to do it right can save you hours of grief later. First things I did were to add a small bead of silicone sealer around the seam where the body of the unit attaches to the lens. This was based solely on other posters mentioning condensation problems. At the same time, I soaked the bolts of the original dummy reflector with Liquid Wrench to get past Loctite overuse from the factory. Let both of these sit for 48 hours. Then, I got started.

I’m not sure if anyone else has put one of these into a Roadster, but there are some minor differences which makes this somewhat unique. The side panels in the trunk are different, but the removal/reinstallation process is the same, so no big deal there. The one challenge I ran into was the fact that since this is a fully enclosed trunk, there is the required glow-in-the-dark manual trunk release handle on the inside rear trunk panel. (Never mind how anyone could possibly get stuffed into that trunk!) This made removing that panel more difficult. There is a plastic mounting plate under the handle that snaps into place over the panel, and there is no way to release those snaps with the panel in place. I managed to muscle the panel off without damaging anything, but there was no way it was going back together the same way. With the panel removed and the handle and release cable removed from the mounting plate, I was able to get a pair of long-nosed pliers under the metal frame piece that the plate is mounted on. I was then able to squeeze the tabs to release the snaps and remove the plate. (I really apologize for not taking pics of this.) I could then reassemble the release cable, handle and mounting plate and snap it back into place after the rear panel was reinstalled. This little snafu added about 1.5 hours to my installation time.

Also, I wish iJDMTOY would run the sheath over the wires farther up the bundle. I was about done with the install before I realized how much loose wire would be dangling without that additional protection. I wasn’t about to undo it all to wrap it higher up at that point.

So with 20/20 hindsight, here’s what I would have done differently: 1) Sheath the wire bundle with heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape to within a few inches of the wire ends. 2) Loosen, but not remove, the rear interior trunk panel. 3) Tap into the right side tail light assembly rather than the left. Since the trunk release handle is on the left side, this would allow more wiggle room to work with a loosened rear panel. There are also better opportunities to secure the wire bundle on the right underside with other parts of the wiring harness on that side.

Here are some post-install pics, although I now realize pics of the release cable/handle/mounting plate would have been more useful.
