Just bought an automatic-question

Hi everybody!

I just purchased a 370z base with sport with 7AT transmission and am new to this forum!

I have a question about when you put the car in manual mode.

I am not sure when to use the paddle shifters! How do you get that sudden acceleration and roar going?? When do you down/up shift?

Thanks a lot for the help!

Use the shifters to select the correct gear to put you in the power band at your given speed.

Is this your first car?

First Z :D

Just don't go over 4000 RPMS for the first 1200 miles. You will figure it out.

You buy a manual or trade in your man card!

The service manual has up/down shift speeds for the 7AT in auto mode, but there is a thread already about when to shift.

Based on 7AT speed in gears (approximately), 1st is good from 0 - 35, 2nd from 15 - 55, 3rd from 20 - 85, 4th from 25 - 125, 5th from 35-155, 6th from 40-155 and 7th from 45 to 155.

When accelerating, I pick an RPM to shift at based on how aggressive I am driving, and shift up when crossing that RPM.

So, for normal cruising, I shift up at 3000-3500 RPM until I reach desired speed, and then shift to get RPM at 2000 or below once cruising. If being aggressive, I'll shift up at 5000-600 RPM. If at WOT, I'll shift as close to 7500 as I can get.

When decelerating, if coming to a complete stop I left the car down shift automatically (though that 4 - 3 is too rough). If I am decelerating for a turn and just driving, I'll down shift to keep RPMs below 3000.

If I am aggressive, I'll downshift to keep RPMs up above 3000, though I am still working on timing that. A few times I downshift a couple of gears just when the automatic downshifts, and I end up a gear low with a really nice roar :)

ABSOLUTELY LISTEN TO LOU ON THIS ONE!! My advise is to forget all about the paddle shifter and roar and concentrate on breaking in your Z as per the owners manual. Don't go over 4,000 rpm's until you are past the 1,200 miles. However, you may already have, and if so, my advise would be to stop it. Take 1,200 miles to get to know you're new Z. The 1,200 will go by fast enough. As much as I wanted to get the break in over with, I found that time to be a very special time. I really got to know so much about my Z, and realized that she has so much more to offer than just the speed and "roar." Even after the 1,200 was past, I was still in awe over what a magnificent automobile she was. Enjoy this time, she has allot to give, don't rush it, savor it.

The first thing I noticed when I broke my Z in was that as you are accelerating, just about the time you reach 3,500 rpm's, she wanted to get up and GO all on her own! Don't let her do that just yet.

Hate to see you end up with an oil burner because you rushed the break in period. You'll have plenty of time to learn about the paddles and etc. No need to rush it. I have about 6,700 miles on my Z and I won't consider her broken in till around 10,000 miles.

Of course, I respect the fact that it's your Z and you have the final say in the matter. I'm just giving you some friendly advise.

Lots of engine builder posts say that's bad advice and that it is more important to avoid constant speed/constant RPM, and you want to rev it up during break-in.

And people have done soft and hard break-in and had engine oil problems, so I don't think it is that simple, but I also haven't seen anyone with a 2010 say they have had the problem.
