GRRR. Apparently I only *thought* I bought my new Z

Last week, I negotiated a purchase with my local dealer for my new Z. 2010 Touring Coupe 6M, Carbon Silver (aka Platinum Graphite), Persimmon, Sport + Nav. I was told there were two available, one in Ontario, one in Quebec, so I gave them a deposit. I was careful to ensure that I would be getting one with less than 100km on it - even had them write it on the agreement. No test drive burnouts in mine, please. They were quick to assure me that this would be so - 'Not a problem. No way these cars are being driven in this kind of weather!'

V8KILR: Dealer possibly crashed my car!!

Today I learned that they were both dealer demos and (I think) they had both already been sold. ('Would you like a black one instead?' 'No, I would not.') When I asked why they didn't know that before, it was explained to me that they couldn't actually ask the other dealer about them until our deal was made - they could only check their inventory online. Otherwise, wouldn't it be worse if they verified that it wasn't sold, then by the time they get back to me to make the deal, the other dealer did go ahead and sell it? Ah yes. Far better this way. My bad for thinking I had bought the car we had agreed to. Say, here's an idea: how about when you ask the other dealer about it, you get him to put it on hold while you get back to me? 'No, it doesn't work that way.' I see.

So now a new car had been ordered from Nissan exactly to my spec. Which would be nice since at least it would be coming to me squeaky clean and brand spanking new right from the boat / train / truck. Only problem is, my dealer doesn't know if Nissan is going to do another 2010 production run for Canada. He can only verify, electronically, that yes, he has ordered one. It's up to Nissan to decide if they're actually going to build it. Might not know until March. I might not take delivery until June or July. Or not at all.

It's just as well I have the patience of Job. Just don't make me wait until 2011!

GRRR.

UPDATE: (Feb 18) Dealer confirmed that my car will be built in the March production run. 2 months to build, plus I-don't-know-how-long to ship equals May or June delivery?? Can't wait!

I heard in December that Nissan was not taking any new production orders until Spring. Does anyone have any better/later info?

6MT 02-02-2010 07:28 PM

I think it's high time you found another dealer. I can't believe we still hear horror stories like this. I feel for you, man.

Indeed. If anyone hears confirmation that a new set of 2010s are going into production (particularly for Canada in my case) that would be nice to know.

Too right.

I feel your pain.... I ordered mine in Dec and was told after the production allocations came out in early Jan mine was not on the list. Come to find out Nissan does not give priority to direct customer ordered vehicles. At least not on the 370Z. If your region does not get allocated production because of slow sales apparently its too bad. After checking around the country, My dealer found my exact car in IL with 19 miles on it and had it shipped up here at his expense. I was lucky. It's now in my garage waiting for the snow to melt...

Good luck...

prichardson 02-04-2010 08:01 PM

Glad you took possession! I gotta believe it's almost as painful for you to have yours sitting in your garage! There's lots of info in this forum about getting a good winter wheel / tire set up going...

this is what i had heard from dealerships in mid-atlantic (USA) before i bought my car in the late december of 2009:

"we will not get any new 2010................not until March.............."

just a bs................they had 2010 in stock in the first wk of January......i guess they were trying to sell of 2009 inventory first.......hmmmmmmmmmmm

not trying to be judgemental........but it tends to work out better for consumers if we "ignore"/filter out what dealers tell us..........

prichardson 02-11-2010 07:27 AM

True. It's especially frustrating since we want to buy these cars. They don't need to trick or deceive us. Just be straight up.

370Zsteve 02-11-2010 07:30 AM

Why don't you buy a 2009 model? There are about ten of them at my dealership. Is it possible to buy one in the US and then bring it back North?

prichardson 02-11-2010 12:33 PM

Thanks for the offer, but I'd like one with km/h. Plus, if it pans out for me, I'm kinda psyched at the idea of having a brand new one built for me. And I think there are a couple of niceties with the 2010 that you don't get with the 2009:
- Heated outside mirrors
- In-cabin microfilter
- Bluetooth Streaming Audio and automatic phonebook download
- USB connectivity

1slow370 02-13-2010 05:56 AM

well the cabin air filter can actually be installed in a 2009 for the price of the 15 dollar filter. and the radio stuff can be dealt with by buying a base with the leather interior and just putting in a nice double din touchscreen nav headunit (that will sound better than the bose and connect to more devices better). the only thing you would lose are the heated mirrors, so if that is acceptable you could probably find another car in your area now and have the interior changed and radio installed long before a new one could be built.

prichardson 02-19-2010 11:58 AM

Awesome news yesterday! My dealer said that Nissan has decided to go ahead with another 2010 production run (for Canada at least, I guess). Production starts in March + 2 months to build + an ocean crossing to Vancouver + a country crossing on rail + trucking to the dealer = delivery in June maybe? I don't know - I'm only guessing at how it'll make it's way from Japan to me.

Can't wait!

PapoZalsa 03-02-2010 06:47 PM

You can negotiate a better price in the 09 than the 10. ;)

No doubt. But now I'm super-psyched to take delivery of a squeaky clean brand new 2010 with all the latest and greatest gizmos and whiz-bangery! Anything less at this point and I'd feel like I was settling.

wheee! 03-03-2010 08:04 AM

I am SOOOO glad I ordered mine last year!!!

ahh c'mon! Now you're just rubbing it, mister I-already-got-my-z!! ;)

gumpy 03-09-2010 04:24 AM

maybe you can get DI the next production run... maybe that's why they're having a long break in between?

But being in Canada, can you not just go south and grab one from the US?

The configuration is a little different for us in Canada. I don't know what all the differences are, but I know at least that our speedometer is in km/h whereas the Americans get mph. Looking at the threads about DIY fog lamp installations, it seems that our wiring to the back may be a bit different too along with a slightly different turn signal stock. So maybe they need a critical mass before deciding to build some destined for Canada.

I could actually save quite a bit of money even considering the exchange rate and the duty that I'd have to pay. But apart from not wanting a car with mph and whatever else, it can get kind of political too. It used to be that it would cost $1.15CAD - $1.25CAD to buy $1.00US so we were used to seeing the prices of things in the US to be 20% - 30% less in US$ than what we would see in CAD$ up here. More recently though, the exchange has been around $1.05 (we've even been at par and beyond a few times) so there was a bit of an uproar when we still saw the same car selling for $30,000US in the states would sell for $40,000CAD. People starting flooding over the border to buy their cars, mph be damned. So much so that manufacturers started banning dealers near the border selling to people who didn't have an American address, or so the story goes. And I don't know what kind of reception someone might get when they tried to service their American bought car at their local dealer in Canada. I'm not a rock-the-boat kind of guy, so I'm happy to patiently wait for my Canadian car. Though it's a little tougher now that spring seems to have sprung for us!

How can you buy a base model with Leather interior? I thought you could only get leather if you upgraded to the Touring model?

Me To

Ordered my 2010 Black on Black full load in mid April. Trading in my 2008 350. I am in the SW Ontario region. Suppose to have it end of June, early July. I have all my Stillen stuff ready for install the minute it gets here. Have you got an ETA from your dealer yet?

prichardson 06-03-2010 07:38 AM

Yes, in fact I finally picked it up on May 7. I definitely wasn't thrilled with my purchasing experience, but in the end they got me what I wanted for a price I was comfortable with. It was worth the wait! I just finished off the break-in period so have really been revelling in it!

Hopefully your wait isn't too excruciating, but seeing as how your driving an almost new 350 I'm guessing you'll be able to suffer through it just fine!

CaptainSlow 06-03-2010 11:25 AM

Just to add for anyone that is wondering about Canadian orders...

I 'ordered' mine on May 15th. The dealer said there was one in Edmonton with 200km if I wanted it. I declined and they said one would come from Japan (White w/ Sport) middle of June. I guess they already had one on the boat because it arrived in Calgary on Monday, May 31. The dealer actually got two 370Z. So if you ordered one in the last month or so and are waiting for it to arrive I'd imagine you'll be getting it soon.

macking99 06-03-2010 12:22 PM

I ordered mine on March 8. Dealer told me it'll take 12 weeks and now they told me maybe it'll be in end of this month. It's taking forever.

prichardson 06-04-2010 07:26 AM

I got confirmation on Feb 18 that they would produce my car starting in March, though they didn't say when in March the production would actually start. It arrived at the dealership on May 4. They prepped it and I picked it up on May 7. So from order confirmation to pickup was 11 weeks + 1 day.
