Was Rick having the flashbacks?

I'd guess it just reminds him of all the Walkers he has killed before, but this time it's his good friend.

My thoughts were that the flashes represented what was going on with Shane's mind while he was 'turning'.

It was Shane that was having the flashbacks. As his life was fleeting and he closed his eyes they would cut to the scenes of the zombies. Then he would reopen his eyes. I think it could mean two things. Just a way to show that death was coming for him or it was the virus taking over.

How exactly did Shane become sick? It only started after he died.

Yeah, supposedly the virus has gone airborne and everyone is already infected. Death just actives the virus. Bites active it sooner than scratches or other ways of death.

I had thought the virus was in the water they were drinking, too.
Maybe the virus has mutated in some way...

I can't wait for the season finale! They air it at 6pm here in socal for some reason even though it states 9pm while I'm watching AMC.
