Rally to Summit Point Nov 11, 2012 FREE

All,
I plan to attend this again this year. I was there last year and had a freak'n blast! Last year I had the Pontiac Solstice, but this year, I've got the Z. We did the wet track, lots of course time and other activities. If you want to do a run up from Fredericksburg, VA, lets meet up and run the course. I took my daily driver and other than upgrading my brakes, I was just fine. Got to ride around in a 500+ HP Ferreri race car and learned a lot! Then we went out and had some good chow and cigars....

DriveLab is honored to hold a high performance driving event just for you, our heroes, who have fight so bravely to defend our country.

Some of you have come out to Summit Point Raceway and have gone for rides with the instructors from the various car clubs. It was an honor to have you in our cars, and almost all of you had expressed the wish to drive. On Sunday, November 11th you shall have your wish! This is your opportunity to have the fun of driving on a race track, on the Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia, about an hour and forty five minutes from Washington DC.
Since you have given so much, and all its great instructors want to give something in return, a Day at the Track.

HELMETS OFF TO HEROES is open to only active military, veterans and Wounded Warriors. We welcome you all so we can pay you back for all you have done for us. So bring out your cars, specially equipped or not, or just come out for the camaraderie with your peers for a day of great fun, great company and a great experience. This event is free for all military, Wounded Warriors and veterans!

Whether you love driving, or hate driving“, are a beginner or not, “HELMETS OFF TO HEROES” hopes you will come out to enjoy yourselves. No experience necessary. We welcome you all to enjoy victories of your own on this beautiful safe racetrack. This is a wonderful opportunity for all you heroes to experience your fantasy of a lifetime.
Cut off date to register is October 11th. “Seating” is limited so register early!
“Miriam has more knowledge of driving in her noggin than anyone should be allowed to have”.
(Sheik A. Va.)

“Miriam is a force of nature. Her enthusiasm and drive have created a major contribution to PCA and to the general driving community in the area that is legendary. Thanks Miriam”! (Tony K. Va.)

“This course should be mandatory prior to issuing driver’s permits”.
(Candace T. Ky.)

“She definitely makes an impression on first time track drivers. Really passionate about sharing the knowledge she's gained and trying to make the roads a bit safer:. (Mark F. N.C.)

Last year, I stayed at a hotel not far from there. It was a heck of a lot of fun and more track time than my Solstice could handle. Met some really great people and learned a lot about my how my old car handled. Looking to getting the stock Z out on the skid pad.

Skid pad was fun. I spent my time learning recovery and the feeling of initial oversteer, and countering it as quickly as possible. If I get on it again, I want to try to maintain a slide.

I just registered. All I did was email him/her. Took 5 minutes.

Cost will be evening but the track fees, likely...brakes, hotel, food...all that stuff.

If it's a one day thing, do you need a hotel??

This looks like fun, but I'm not eligible for it. FYI the Jefferson circuit is the same one I did my first hyperdrive in and the same one I drove the Gallardo around. It's small, but you can still have a lot of fun on it. Have fun guys

You gotta be there at 7AM. You may not want to drive up at like, 4:30 AM and then track your car...

I'll be rolling up with a posse of my own, likely. We should figure out who's going that we all know and consider getting a couple hotel rooms or something.

Ah, figured. Keep me posted, I could push any birthday nonsense my parents might want to do to the following weekend...

That's the way almost all HPDE's work. Trackdaze includes an instructor in-car, and multiple classes.

MightyBobo 11-13-2012 01:15 PM

Bumping this up. Happened this past Sunday, and was a blast.

I dont mind saying, you missed out Chris :-p

First half of the day was dedicated to braking exercises for about 45 minutes, another 45 towards the slalom (in my video below), and another 45 at the skidpad (also below, but NOT me or my car - that was a veteran driving someone else's NISMO).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JY_8jgh9kc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1dfKSGjL6Y

They also gave free ride-alongs with anyone who was interested really in a nice, clean Lotus Esprit V8. Other instructors were more than happy to take you out in their own cars. One notable one being a neat Caterham (of which I have photos on my phone that arent uploaded yet), and a sweet track-prepped C5 Z06.

Lunch was free (albeit unexciting lol), and overall people took care of everyone there.

In the afternoon, we had our 2 ~25 minute sessions. My first session, my instructor was an older gentleman who, woe is him, had the terrible job of being a pitchman for some luxury cars. IE, guy wants to buy a Ferrari but doesnt know his head from his *** about handling - no problem, we'll have George here take ya out in it on the track, and show you what it can do! He was George :-p. Anyway, I felt I learned a LOT from him, and raelly enjoyed his instruction. Sadly, his knee went out on him later in the day, and I had to swap out with another instructor. This guy was the owner of the Caterham, and his line that he tried to teach me, I did NOT like at all. It was a line for a light, nimble, low-powered car. And it makes sense I liked the other guys line better: he was used to driving high HP GT cars around the track, whereas the other instructor was used to lighter, more nimble cars.

Anyway, sadly I didnt record session 1 since the GoPro I was borrowing was low on batteries, but I did get session 2. I was easily a few seconds slower in session 2 due to this wonky line I was following, but such is life - I learned a new line around the track at least, I suppose...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrAuHmU-TM0

I have in-car camera of the slalom's and my track session also, but I need to upload them yet. Will update this later!

In the end, I had low expectations for the event (I was proven correct in the classroom sessions lol, but its ok). But the instructors I had were fairly knowledgeable and catered to my level of experience, which I appreciated greatly.

*EDIT*
I guess I only took a couple pictures. Oh well :(

Caterham below was my 2nd instructor's car.

LOl! yeah thats Meriam. She's great! That my old Solstice GXP at 2:36 on the wet track. Lots of fun. I traded up to the Z after seeing how the Solstice performed on the track. I guess last years video still shows myself and Scott huh? I'm in the red coat and Scott is after me. We were rep'n the Marine Corp and AF. Fun little car, but I never felt that it was going to really handle how hard I was going to push it unless I put about 4k into brakes. Unfortunately, I had to travel for work at the last minute for this year. :shakes head: Last year, I learned a lot about the Solstice I put together. Unfortunately, I learned that I didn't really feel the confidence in that car. Now that I've had a few months behind the Z, I think I made the correct upgrade. The Z gives me the confidence that when I throw it into a hard corner, the back end isn't going to just fly out. I also learned that the brakes on my Solstice, sucked! Burned the after-market ones up after about 7 hard laps. I was very disappointed. I also realized that I had plenty of power for a track like that and my level of experience. I had thought about doing an LS7 swap into the Solstice or run bigger turbo's, but after that day...no way. I like the Z's linear gain, very predictable.
