Is it even worth fixing Xboxs? Just buy one of the cheap new ones and use your old HD.

Is it still under warranty, just send it back and get a new one?

Lol, I dont know a single old-school 360 that's under warranty still...

I bought it 32 days before the HDMI version came out (or was even announced), so RIGHT outside of the window to return it to get a free upgrade, really.

And Zagg - why would I buy a used version of the old-school style, that could possibly fail on me again? I'd just get a newer slim and call it good at that point...but seeing as I just bought a house, I'm TRYING to cut back my spending a bit.

That, and I'm handy, so I try to fix **** myself first.

I meant that brand new 360 arcades with HDMI were going for $150 with a $50 dollar rebate at Walmart not that long ago ... They've got no HD, but you can transfer the one you have to the new one.

edit: hmmm maybe they discontinued the Arcade as a quick search doesn't find me anything but "refurbished" ones ...

I can get a slim with Kinect for $250 or less right now. The Kinect itself almost makes up the difference.

But again, I'd be paying $100 for something that could fail on me again before the next XBox even comes out, if I did the Arcade method.

The Kinect head tracking is pretty fun with Forza 4! But you have to be sitting pretty close. It didn't work at all before I got my set up and was playing on the couch.

I'm not sure how you're going to find someone to do this cheaper than buying a new xbox.

run over it in your truck and call it a day.

Yeah, I was more looking for potential alternate solutions haha. A reflow/reball is usually a $100 job lol

But my xbox when it died on me, I found a guy on craigslist to fix it. Lot of people offer their services to fix them on there.

The people on Craigslist generally do the simple fix which costs about $5 perform, which I already did. Its easy to do.

MY problem unfortunately, is quite a bit more expensive more than likely.

Did you bake it yet? Typically with Xbox the solder like to come loose and the heat sinks on the south bridge are garbage. Rip it apart and throw the motherboard in the oven at around 350~F. That is enough to remelt the solder and fix most south bridge connection issues. If you don't like that just take off all heat sinks and turn it on. It will thermal shutdown after 10-15min and will have the same effect. I prefer the latter because I also like to redo the factory TIM because no manufacturer can apply TIM correctly...my temps dropped about 10~C after a fresh application..

I'm going to get a heat gun today and reflow the solder myself with that. I dont like the baking idea, personally - prefer a more focused and higher-temperature option.

Taking the heatsinks off wont help me: the southbridge HAS no heatsink :-p. Besides, I've already replaced my X-clamp and redone my thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. They are running properly.
