Maryland Emissions Testing
...trying to figure out when I would have to worry about getting tested with a 2010 car. I read on the web site that only would be tested if transferred ownership, but I could be reading it wrong.
Thoughts ? Input ? Expertise ? |

It's really no big hassle. The VEIP places are drive through. They usually just hook a sensor up to the OBD-II. For older vehicles, they may use the sniffer. But you can relax until you hear from the MVA. And it's only like 20-30 bucks to get tested. |
I think Jon (ZCar) or Masa can explain this emission testing in MD.

We all have to get it done every few years. I own a 2010 and haven't had to do it yet. You'll get a notice by mail when you need to get tested.

pulling this from another forum... "4 years off new dealers lot, 2 years thereafter, IIRC." |
...well when it comes, it comes. I am basically just wondering if I will have to put my stock cats back oin to pass...or if Berk HFCs will pass.
I suppose I could "palm" a $50 bill to the guy hooking it up, and see what happens. |

Look, if you're not throwing a CEL code, then the OBD-II will probably not pick it up. If it does pick it up, you will be given something that says you have to have it removed and re-tested by some date, which will give you at least 2 weeks or a month, and even then you can request an extension. It is at that point when you might consider palming a 50. But it may pass emissions without all that, as long as the car isn't throwing a code. Also, you can get aftermarket code readers and scan it yourself before driving up. |

The Commonwealth was at risk of losing billions of dollars of federal transportation funding for the future, says Virginia Delegate Joe T. May. He said government officials were even considering outlawing charcoal grills and lawn mowers. Your vehicle must meet Virginia's emissions inspection requirements if it is garaged in one of the localities listed below: the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, or Stafford the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas or Manassas Park |

Maryland is just as bad. They rape you in taxes here. I go shop in VA if I need something nowadays. Better yet, just buy it online. |

Remember, folks, that a gas tax means inflation across the board. Almost every business requires gassing up their cars, and pretty much everyone drives or rides a bus to where they're going. |
