Earthquake in VA, MD & DC?

Heard that an Earthquake 5.8 hit VA, MD & DC.

I didn't even felt it...

Masa 08-23-2011 01:26 PM

Yup, they are reporting 5.8 or something from Mineral, VA. Felt it here in College Park, office building was shaking lol. Had some friends in NJ and NYC texting me they felt it too.

Shahid, we were all standing in lot KK and the Dean of Engineering was running past us and said "brb checking on the reactor". I LOL'd then I saw cops and a firetruck pull up and said ohhhhsnap the reactor core could be damaged.

Damn that's crazy, glad classes haven't started yet. :icon17:

Cmike2780 08-23-2011 01:34 PM

Felt it on Long Island. I was parked while in my Z and though it was the engine having a rough idle. Then I noticed the building in front of me was shaking.

b1adesofcha0s 08-23-2011 01:37 PM

I first thought it was just some crazy equipment running in my plant, since the building I'm in isn't really used anymore. Once it stopped someone told me it was an earthquake. :bowrofl:

GM_Traitor3.5 08-23-2011 01:57 PM

Yeah the epicenter was about 10 mins from where my sister, niece and brother in law live. Pretty wild.

Crazy! Are they all ok?

Masa 08-23-2011 02:35 PM

They closed my building to check on the reactor so they sent us all home lol.

That must have been nice :p

We had to evacuate here and then we just went back in like 20 mins later.

If my building had a reactor, I'd :gtfo2: too :icon17:

b1adesofcha0s 08-23-2011 02:41 PM

They SHOULD have some safe guards in place in case something like this happens. If not, let's hope they learned their lesson.

Drex 08-23-2011 02:42 PM

i was driving when it happened, didnt feel a thing!

4r3s 08-23-2011 02:43 PM

yep felt it shake like crazy in columbia, thought I was getting sick at first and then I was like oh its just an earthquake....OH ITS AN EARTHQUAKE!!! and booked it outside lol

Roadster4Us 08-23-2011 03:01 PM

Rocked pretty crazy at Quantico. Sitting in the office, you could see the walls and ceilings shaking and swaying pretty good. Lasted about 30 seconds. Reactors in the area (Lake Anna) did what they are supposed to, automatically go offline.

Somberlaine 08-23-2011 03:03 PM

it was pretty wild...my first earthquake. I thought it was just the building at first.

cell phone service screeched to a halt. no voice or data. nada.

ZCarMan 08-23-2011 03:08 PM

Was in the office and felt it. The whole building was shaking and ceiling material started falling. Friend was in a meeting next door and said he looked out the window and saw the frame moving back and forth side to side. We all went under our desks for about 20-30 seconds. Then evacuated and finally released a half hour later. Now gridlock on the highways. 5.9 is the latest magnitude and one aftershock so far.

Roadster4Us 08-23-2011 03:12 PM

It just confirmed what I always knew, no way I am ever living out on the west coast :icon17:

Of course now we have to start worrying about what Irene might bring out way.

murphman 08-23-2011 03:24 PM

thought i felt some of the shock here in houston, turns out it with was just the lady in the cube next to me shaking her fat leg.

The funny thing is most of my life I was out in California and earthquakes are common there. When today's quake struck it didn't take long to figure it out but other here who haven't been through something like this were freaking out.

kayess 08-23-2011 04:25 PM

i was in the old 4th floor whitten building at usda....it felt like it was gona come crashing down...not cool -_-

Kirkster 08-23-2011 04:33 PM

I missed all the fun as I am out of the country...

Worst quake I was in was in El Salvador. Though that my obituary was going to read like Elvis's... Did not want to go out on the toilet...

LOL that was exactly the thought process for most of us in the area :icon17:

dad 08-23-2011 05:25 PM

If your not use too it, a 5.9 can be scary. Try a 6.5, at 4:00 AM, nice wake up call!
Put a pair of shoes beside your bed tonight. In case of an after shock, you don't want glass in your feet!

Yeah, we had quite a few people at work that were very shaken. I believe this was strongest on record in this area and really the first quake that most natives of this area have experienced. We on rare occasions feel a little subtle shake that we aren't even sure is a quake but nothing remotely close to this.

Haha it's not one of those giant reactors... the uranium in our reactor isn't even weapons grade. It's a university reactor so its all for educational research. ;)

FYI, don't believe what you see on T.V. Our reactor glows warm blue not green! :rofl2:

No one ever mentions us in CO

Vapiano 08-23-2011 11:58 PM

I was coming out of the 7-11 on Race Track Road in Bowie and the parking lot started swaying like crazy! One of the few times where I felt I was not in control of what was going to happen.

I've felt that way before....especially when I was married. :icon14:

"Was" being the key word in that sentence.

I was on a Air Force C-17 at Andrews Air Force Base, coming back from an Asia trip, we landed at 145pm, and at 151pm the quake hit, we had all ready stopped, and the doors of the plane were down, and all of a sudden the plane started shaking, and several people started asking, "Arent we taxied? Are we still moving?" and then several people's govt. blackberries went off with official mail informing everyone of the quake.. pretty crazy.
