Track Daze @ Summit Point

Is anybody else going this weekend? This is my first track event. Excited and nervous.

ZCarMan 05-13-2011 03:27 PM

Not this weekend. I'm headed to Summit in June for Hyperfest. You're gonna have a blast!

I wish I could go, but I gotta work.. Have fun bro

Okay day 1 down. I was definitely pretty scared the first 2 runs, did a little better the 3rd run, and mellowed out quite a bit on the last run. So improving steadily, and it was a blast. Heading back tomorrow morning for day 2!

Oh and I will definitely need an oil cooler. After each half hour run I was at 260, and it was only like 60-65 outside.

An oil cooler and some quality break pads will truly make the difference. Glad to see you had such a great time though!

Yeah I have hawk hps on right now and they were starting to fade a little towards the end of each run. I'll get some XPs for the next event.

eastwest2300 05-16-2011 06:50 AM

Spinhead, thanks for posting those pics..

spinhead 05-17-2011 08:27 AM

Okay here's some video of a guy who was behind me for a while. I gave him a passby eventually. I like the dig he made at me, "he's only got you in horsepower not talent". Fvcker haha. But actually that guy was driving better than I, it wasn't his first event, and they were in a stripped out miata so they were taking corners stupid fast.

Yeah, you probably should of given him the point-by a lot sooner. But then again, he didn't really do a good job of making himself known to you. He should of stayed on your *** during the turns instead of being so passive.

spinhead 05-17-2011 08:38 AM

But then I wouldn't have this footage :D

I'll be there in August with a bunch of boys from Boston. It's a fun track!

Damn, your Z was pulling away big time on the straightaways.. good job bro.

MightyBobo 09-01-2011 09:08 AM

Aaaaaactually Im pretty sure that RX-7 even had the power on him, and he was sitting on his *** waiting for the opportunity for a point-by, but he didnt get one when he should have. He even took the FAR inside of that corner so he was in the proper place to do it, even though its WAY off the line of that corner lol.

So nothing against Spinhead, since it WAS his first time out and everything, but he should have given a point-by a lot sooner and been more aware of his surroundings.

Can't watch youtube vids at work. Will check it out once I get home though. Definitely want to head out to Summit at some point. Will I be putting myself in a lot of danger if I go with all season tires and just take it easy? If not, I might try to go like early spring where I may be able to get away without needing an oil cooler.

You should come with me on Oct 1st/2nd. Dont even have to drive, just come for the weekend and see what its like. No, you wont be putting yourself into danger assuming you're taking it easy, although it wont be that exciting at all and the all-seasons may not communicate their intentions as well as performance tires will.

And I dont think the time of year will mean much at all as far as needing an oil cooler - it may be colder out, but the motor just will not be able to cool down fast enough. It might take a little longer to max out though.

When I went to VIR, it was early November and my oil cooler was keeping me stable, but I can almost put money that without it, I'd have been having trouble.

MightyBobo 09-01-2011 11:22 AM

Oh yeah, and a little off-topic - when do you want to learn how to drive stick? I have a long weekend this weekend. I'll be doing my brake lines probably tomorrow, so...thats probably out of the question. Other than that, though...

b1adesofcha0s 09-01-2011 12:15 PM

Not sure about Oct 1st/2nd. The 1st I'm going on the GT-R cruise, but if I change my mind I will definitely let you know. If I'm not working on Sundays by then I will definitely go with you on the 2nd. Working at my uncle's gas station on Sundays until they can find a good replacement for me.

I may be able to get around needing an oil cooler if I don't push it too much. Only thing that worries me is damaging my car since I will not have the money to fix any major damages at that time. Other than that I'm excited about finally making it out. I really just want to focus on improving my driving skill in the beginning. Still a complete novice when it comes to performance driving that's not just in a straight line.

One of my friends was supposed to teach me with one of the cars from his dad's dealership, but I don't think that's gonna happen. Going to be in NY this weekend and will probably be working all of next weekend. How's the 17th for you? I should be good then.

Oh hai there shitty maroon integra :)

I did a track day last winter on some shitty 8 year old ES100s out of desperation, which isn't exactly an all-season but it's not a track tire either, and it wasn't as terrible as I had feared. Two weeks later I went back on some new Azenis and while I was definitely faster the second time around, it was almost less fun to be on a better tire. More grip means less dodginess and less satisfaction when you pass a 911. That said, I tore those things up. Massive chunking on the edges, huge sections missing on the tread, and they were easy to lock up so I probably didn't do any favors in the flat spotting department. I sold them a week later to some poor bastard to put on his Civic. If you have older all-seasons that might need replacement soon, don't let it hold you back, but I wouldn't tear up a brand new set in a weekend when a proper tire will hold up much better.

If anything, Shenandoah is absolutely brutal on brakes. I've learned to just take it easy so I have something left to drive home on.

I'd recommend Summit Point versus a GT-R hard-park-a-thon. They have awesome karting there so you won't be twiddling your thumbs necessarily, and there's already enough drool-worthy cars registered to make it worth your time wandering around the pits. Hell, between Bobo's Z, my cousin's 335, his mystery friend's Aston, and my hella sweet 21 year old sedan, we've got enough metal to get the ladies wet, if you catch my drift. Or not, but screw it.

I just replaced my front tires a couple weeks ago and will probably put on new rears before the year ends. I think next spring would be ok. Would love to run my car at Summit on Oct 1st, but no way I could have it track ready. Spending money on other mods and need to save for tires later this year. I'll think about it and see what I want to do. If I go with you Rob, will I get to sit inside the car with you?

steronz 09-01-2011 12:48 PM

Unfortunately, TrackDaze has an extremely strict no-passengers policy for intermediate (me), and Rob's seat will be occupied by his instructor. Best we can do is hope to smuggle you in with an instructor, which is always a possibility but by no means a guarantee. Most of the instructors are cool as **** and wouldn't have a problem with it, but I only know a handful of them from previous events and I don't know if any will be there.

eta: Cripes, 12.9 in a stock auto!? Impressive!

Yeah that would kind of take a lot of the fun out of making all the effort to go all the way out there. Might just wait till I can run before actually heading out.

Thanks! It was so good I can't even reach it with mods :rofl2:
Getting intakes soon and heading back out to see if I can do any better. The weather is better too now, last time I ran it was 100+ degrees outside.
