NASA - August 21-22, 2010 - Summit Point Raceway, WV

Quote:

Please join us at Summit Point Motorsports Park for this August event! The weekend will feature double sprint races for all NASA classes, all levels of HPDE, Time Trials, and license evaluation.

We will offer a Hyperdrive session on Saturday. A hyperdrive is basically one track session plus classroom for $50 and you are assigned an instructor. This is intended for those new to the sport although intermediate drivers may also participate. Perfect for crew or family!
Site here: National Auto Sport Association - nasaproracing.com

I might do the $50 thing just to get my car out there. Don't have brakes or an oil cooler so one track session is probably enough for me. ;-)

ZCarMan 08-03-2010 03:14 PM

All right I paid for the Hyperdrive so lets go!

fursure dude! I'll confirm so we can get signed up once I clear that weekend on the ole calendar.

ZCarMan 08-03-2010 03:35 PM

Sounds good! Maybe we can get some others to caravan out? Steve was the one who got me to sign up with a NASA membership earlier this year. This will give me a chance to work the car out see if I know how to drive before I head down to Z Nationals in September.

m4a1mustang 08-03-2010 03:40 PM

*sigh* I was hoping I'd have the car ready to be able to run an HPDE or two this year but I'm certainly not ready for that date... I'll see if I can make it out there with you guys that weekend to watch haha.

Do you guys have helmets?

tooohip 08-03-2010 03:41 PM

Looks like you have to be a member of NASA?

Yeah, it's $50 for a year membership I think.

Make sure you guys look at the NASA rulebook and have an approved helmet.

I know I do. Doctor makes me wear it every day.

I need to purchase one. It has to be Snell SA2000 according to the site.

I'm just going for the hyperdrive this time.

Soloracer is a good source for helmets. I bought one of the entry level helmets made by Pyrotect (around $275) a few years ago. I think they are made by Bell.

4r3s 08-03-2010 05:53 PM

is this where they teach you how to drive your car basically? And when I say drive I mean DRIVE!!

4r3s 08-04-2010 07:03 AM

yeah I def want to do this sometime, more than likely next year tho for me. My buddy did this and basically went through an entire set of brand new tires. Buying new tires right now or in the near future doesn't fit in my mod schedule. You guys are going to have a blast!

Kirkster 08-04-2010 01:48 PM

I am still trying to get a determination on the factory roll bar on the roadster... Not sure if it is considered rollover protection or for show and Summit points says we have to know if it is considered protection.

m4a1mustang 08-04-2010 02:37 PM

Pretty sure it offers rollover protection but not quite sure if any of the sanctioning bodies will consider it sufficient for track use.

ZCarMan 08-04-2010 06:40 PM

Picked up the Z today from AAM Competition. New oil cooler and brake pads are installed!

ZCarMan 08-16-2010 03:41 PM

Okay, its set. I'm headed out to Summit Point on Friday after work. Will stay the night in Winchester and then head up in the morning to the race track. I'll try and get video to capture my first time. Should be a hoot!

ZCarMan 08-16-2010 05:13 PM

Lance?

m4a1mustang 08-16-2010 06:16 PM

Did you pick up a helmet, Jon?

Nope, was informed by the operations person for NASA that they will have helmets that I can use there. I will get one before heading down to Z Nationals though.

I had the 19 row Setrab installed. AAM used a Mocal thermoplate sandwhich adapter so it kicks in at 180 degrees. High quality AN fittings as well. They can do it in one day provided they have time.

tooohip 08-18-2010 09:11 AM

Hey Jon, did you purchase the cooler via AAM or where did you get it? It was an all day install too eh? Yikes! Figured a couple hours. ;-)

Yes, AAM has the oil coolers. They just had to order the thermoplate sandwhich adapter. I think if they have all the parts it would only take a few hours as well. You can ask Jon at AAM and he can let you know.

tooohip 08-19-2010 10:55 AM

Thanks for the info Jon. It looks like my weekend is shot already so I wont' be making the NASA thing. Have fun! I'll be looking forward to hearing how it went and how the car performs.

m4a1mustang 08-19-2010 11:27 AM

Have fun, Jon. I expect lots of pics and video!

ZCarMan 08-21-2010 07:09 PM

Okay, so I spent the day at Summit Point and had a great day! I got to the track about 8AM with Patricia and we signed in and made are way over to the tech inspection shed. Many cars were already there and we drove in and went through the inspection with no problems. I removed my spare tire, Jack, lug wrench and the mat that covers it all before the inspection as is requires. I"d also already removed the driver and passenger floor mats as required. After passing tech, we parked next to a guy with a silver 370z so there were two of us there out of all the cars. I used 3mpainters tape to puty numbers on my driver and passenger doors and covered my headlights. My class started at 10AM and we got the initial basics on flags and hand signals to use. Then at 1PM we made our way to the grid where we got our instructors. I had a great instructor who toldme when to break and share to find the lone and accelerate. We ran 25mins and I learned about finding the line, braking before the turn, and accelerating. The oil cooler and the upgraded brake pads with the racing brake fluid was worth every penny as I had no issues with brake fade or high oil temps. Mind you it ws 92F at the time. I am beat but have a great day under my belt to build on. Next, Virginia Intl Raceway I. October to begin the Hpde series and truly learn how to drive on the track. Lastly, I met some great people of all ages and owners of all males of cars, all willing to share knowledge and experience If you want a challenging yet awesome time I recommend trying a Hyperdrive to see what it is all about and see what real fun the Z is to drive in a safe and controlled environment.

Sounds awesome, Jon! I hope to join you soon on the HPDE stuff, though likely not in a Z.

Steve, I hope to see you out there as well. One of the guys driving in my group was in a brand new 5.0 Mustang. It was his first time out as well. He had some difficulties finding the line as we all did initially but he too is hooked.

tooohip 08-23-2010 09:28 AM

So Jon, your oil cooler and brake pads were good enough I take it. I guess if I got those two things done to my car I'd be up for one of these upcoming events. Did you run with VDC on or off? ;-)

VDC was on. Funny thing is, I'm in grid area waiting to go onto the track while talkign with my instrucitor for a few seconds and then they wave us to go! So I go and only afterward realized I didn't have my syhchro rev turned on. I was so into it I didn't even realize till about my third lap through. Yeah, oil cooler and brake pades, plus upgraded brake fluid will do it for you. I think you'll really enjoy it.

tooohip 08-23-2010 12:58 PM

Heal Toe baby! ;-)
