I think we're gonna swing by, at least for a little bit -- will probably do lunch someplace as well.....

m4a1mustang 07-03-2010 07:28 AM

OK so I'm not sure how long you guys are going to be there, but I'll probably be late (10:30 or later). Gonna be in Springfield for a bit this morning.

Sscottfitz 07-03-2010 08:29 AM

We'll wait for ya Steve-O, I may be a hair late this morning too.

We ARE thinking about lunch someplace?

TROOPER 07-03-2010 07:02 PM

THE QUESTION -- is it too many lights OR too many light GROUPS........and WHAT IS THE NUMBER?

m4a1mustang 07-03-2010 07:57 PM

So a quick search of the Code reveals...

Quote:

§ 46.2-1030. When lights to be lighted; number of lights to be lighted at any time; use of warning lights.

B. Not more than four lights used to provide general illumination ahead of the vehicle, including at least two headlights and any other combination of fog lights or other auxiliary lights approved by the Superintendent, shall be lighted at any time. However, this limitation shall not preclude the display of warning lights authorized in §§ 46.2-1020 through 46.2-1027, or other lights as may be authorized by the Superintendent.

Reading through 46.2-1020 to 46.2-1027 there is no mention of LEDs as approved lighting, so it really comes down to what the definition of "general illumination ahead of the vehicle" is, I think. Unless I'm missing something, even the Audi LEDs could be questioned.

My guess is the officer didn't write you up for the front lights because she didn't really think there was anything illegal about them... she might have thought that at first but after a little more thought it becomes apparent that it's terribly unclear. :shakes head:

I would definitely replace the blue license plate lights, though. That is probably what really gets you pulled over.

Also, find some way to reduce the output of that fog light. It is TERRIBLY bright. When I follow your car I feel like tailgating you so I don't have to look at the foglight! :icon18:

Soooo, it almost sounds like for "general illumination ahead of the vehicle", the number is 4, but that still doesn't address the definition of "a light" -- example, is a bar of LEDs that are in a group count as a light OR is each individual BULB count as a light..........

I hate rain delays.......

My guess is the law is going to define each individual LED as a "light." If you read through the code it gets very specific about the maximum output of certain lights, including any one interior bulb (no greater than 15 candlepower... could LED interior lights be illegal? :icon18:).

Gotta love the Commonwealth.
