1/3/2010!!

Last few days I started modding the Z, even though they were very small mods. My goal is to have the car Track-Ready by Spring time. Here are some pics of the progress:

1. TWM Type R 440g shift knob with the engraving. At 130 bux incl shipping it was pricey but it makes shifting a complete blast and takes away some of the shifter vibrations as well. Installing this thing was a major pita but well worth it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3354.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3355.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3356.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3358.jpg

As you can see it shortens the overall length of the shifter by about an inch which helps with the improved overall feel.

2. Dynamat!!
The road noise on the Z is quiet compared to my S but when I drive this thing to work sometimes and have to carry clients who drive 100k+ luxo cruisers, I need to make sure they're not raising their voice just to talk to me. Best 17 bux i've ever spent. I made the mistake of buying only 1 pack which was not enough but you get the idea of what i'm trying to do. I will order another pack and finish the trunk very soon. This drastically reduced the road noise and I am certain that doing the entire trunk will improve it even more. Very satisfied.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3339.jpg

3. Tint.
Cali is anal with having front windows tinted, and cops seem to spot my car from a mile away so i decided to go with a lighter shade in the front. Surprisingly the two different shades blend in well and doesn't create as big of a contrast that i thought it would. 100 bux with lifetime warranty for all 5 windows and they did an EXCELLENT job!!!

Sorry the car is super dirty.

Next mods are: Modshack's oil cooler, FI exhaust, Redline engine oil, Sway bar, new diff & tranny fluid (havent decided on which ones yet). I'll try a few track events with those mods and see where i need to go from there. Thanks for looking!!

That shift knob is beautiful. As a side note you may want to look into torso shortening surgery.

lol yeah you should see me when i run. my legs rev faster than my vq.

motoextreme 01-04-2010 12:37 AM

Just looking at some of your past cars...good choices. I've owned two S2000s, buddy borrowed and wrecked one of them. Also owned the exact same SL550 I bought from Fletcher Jones but a 1600 lease payment grew old and the damn thing was a bit of a tank for turns. Nice comfortable ride though.

Come to think about it, I've had just about every car but that S2000 was pretty fun, couldnt stand the bottom end, horrible Torque so it felt like a Civic around town but that 9000 rev was sweet.

Good luck with the Z man, its like a virus though, start the mods and you can't quit! Thankfully I'm out of ideas so now I'm onto the '67 fairlady project. Can't wait for Superchargers but I MAY have a awesome hook up on Turbo's that may prove pretty reasonably priced..fingers crossed!

Z looks so nice in black by the way.

Haha wow never met anyone with the same combo of cars before. You know i still really miss that S sometimes. There is nothing like top down on a cool summer night and revving that gnarly little motor to the stratosphere while shifting that work of art tranny. The rawness doesn't get any better than that unless you get a Lotus. The benz for a 100k car is garbage i agree. It looks nice and clients always like working with "wealthy" people so it does its job well. Gluck with the Z and hurry up with you paintjob photoshoot already!!! hahaha

XBadgerX 01-05-2010 09:55 AM

Tbone, are you happier with your Z than your S? Used to have an S, and now considering the Z. Just trying to get feed back.

tbonesteak 01-05-2010 02:51 PM

It's funny you ask that because for about 2 months after i bought the Z, i went into some sort of a withdrawal where i regretted selling the S for the Z. If you've ever watched the top gear episode where Rich Hammond compares the boxter s vs m coupe, i'd say that's a carbon copy of how the situation goes. Both cars offer different things. You have to know going into the Z that it's not designed to behave like the s. Not better, not worse. Just different. Overall, i've come to appreciate the z much more than before and am now at a point where i would never go back to the s even if i could.

What i miss about the s: one of the best trannies ever made, drop top, 8 or 9k revs, the nimbleness, the connected feeling to the road, the raw nature and feel, light weight, etc. What i love about the z: POWERRRRRR, rock solid chassis, amentities (S had none literally), the vq, torque, much much easier to drive fast than the s (no snap oversteer like the s), more refined everything, comparable handling to the s, etc.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the z, but make sure you understand what the purpose of this car is. Then you'll be the happiest camper ever. Gluck!

Update: Custom rear plate LEDs!!!!

I checked out the direct plug n play bulbs you can get from vleds for the rear license plate lights, but i felt it didn't do an adequate job and i've also been hearing that those burn out so i decided to fabricate a much better solution. The result is an extremely well lit completely OEM looking solution. It is almost identical in color to the Lexus OEM ones but much much brighter. I can now reverse in complete darkness and have the leds illuminate all of the rear area.

1.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0289.jpg
Remove the housing and the bulbs. Just slide the entire housing sideways and it pops right out.

2.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0292.jpg
Pry open the housing. Take a small flathead and start prying from the corner with the most clearance. You have to apply quite a bit of pressure until you hear a crack. This is not going to crack the housing so you don't have to worry. You're just cracking the dried glue.

3.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0294.jpg
Take an LED panel such as this. This one could not fit any more perfect than it did without trimming anything.

4.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0299.jpg
Take a glue gun and create a pair of spacers between the LED panel and the surface of the housing. This helps run the wire out of the housing hole much easier and protects the led panel in many ways. This simple step sometimes is the difference between having a panel last 3 months to 5 years.

5.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0302.jpg

6.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0304.jpg

7.

8.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...IMG_0305-1.jpg

9.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0301.jpg

10.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...IMG_0307-1.jpg
Then you just glue the housing back together, attach connector that comes with the led panel and plug the baby in.

11.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_0309.jpg
Voila! Sorry i don't have any night time pictures yet but i will take some and post them tonight. These daytime pics do not do the lights any justice. They are so so bright and so white it is pleasing to my eyes when i look at them.

Nice lookin Z man! I was tempted to get black, but its true what they say, its a full time job keeping it clean hehe. Platinum Graphite allows me to be a little lazy :)

I noticed the pics of the dynamat, did it help a lot with the road noise that you get with the Z? The sound of pebbles hitting the wheel wells and undercarriage of the car doesn't bother me that much, but it would be if i could kill it a bit. curious as to how well the dynamat works and how easy it is to install...

the led set up with the license plate lights is pretty damn bright! who needs reverse lights?

tbonesteak 01-11-2010 12:20 AM

Hey haha yeah black is hard to keep but i think it's pretty rewarding in its own wicked way.

As far as the dynamat goes, i didn't get it to reduce the pebble noises in the wheel well. I will not even be dynamatting that area. I was concerned with road noise, just straight up tire noise and wind noise that resonates through the cabin. Dynamat reduced it noticeably and i am a happy camper. Honestly, the pebble noises do not bother me one bit. If anything, it makes me more aware of what i'm driving through.

schrute 01-11-2010 12:31 AM

Dayum those license plate lights are bright - nice job man!

tbonesteak 01-11-2010 12:46 AM

thank you sir. i dunno why they came out so blue in the pics....they are really white.

antman22 01-11-2010 11:02 AM

it comes out blue due to the white balance settings on your camera...i could go on about photography, but it'd bore everyone haha.

where do you buy dynamat...and where do you buy those led panels that you used for the license plate lights?

tbonesteak 01-13-2010 07:16 PM

the dynamat i got from amazon. as far as the led goes, i don't remember where i got them but any led panel will work. they're all the same really.

Oil Changed to Redline Synthetic!!!!
I just hit 5000 miles so I said why not.

1.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3373.jpg
12 Quarts of pure goodness. Thanks AK for persuading me to Redline. I swear, you should get paid by them.

2.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3374.jpg
Oh the irony.....they brag and brag about how good the oil is under hot temps and they slap this sucker on.:stirthepot:

3.

4.

For those who want to know how it looks like, here it is.

5.

Not suitable for break in. I waited until 5k to switch over.

6.

On jackstands.

7.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3379.jpg
Levitating Z. On a serious note, if you notice, i purposely tilted the car a tiny bit to the right to make sure i can drain as much dirty oil as possible.

6.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3380.jpg

7.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3386.jpg
I swear by this filter since many years ago when they were blue instead of gold. Good stuff.

8.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3389.jpg
Thanks again to AK for teaching me this ingenious method.

9.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3392.jpg
Best 5 dollars I've ever spent. Bought at Pepboys.

10.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3394.jpg
I always make sure to fill the new filter with some oil to prevent a dry start. Does doing this make the car last longer at all? Probably not. Does it help me sleep at night? Yes. Oh and make sure to lube the new gasket with oil.

11.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3398.jpg
Looking pretty clean!

12.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3401.jpg
Feeding the baby monster.

Impressions: Holy hell she runs smooth. Noticeably quieter and smoother. I will change the oil and filter every 5000 miles with this setup. Thanks for looking and happy modding! Next up on my list is the FI cbe so stay tuned!

Cheers,

Tim

Redline FTW. Looks like you went cheap with the Kroger brand funnel instead of the name brand though:rofl2:

I fill the new filter too. You're right, probably has little benefit, but makes me feel better.

AK370Z 01-19-2010 01:41 AM

Very nice Tbone. I like the license plate light mod. Also, the water bottle funnel is GREAT. It's FREE and works like charm!
