I hope so too. I’ve been a great customer for Z1 I hope they do what they can to make it right. Pitching in on my tear down costs and sending a rebuild gasket kit would be appreciated (I’m on my 3d teardown for this rebuild!!)

Z1 says all that cylinder wear is normal. They like how it’s built and are sending it back to me. They say they recommend I drop it back in and run it.

So in it goes. If it blows up I guess I’ll just drop in a Stock block. I’m out of ideas how to get this motor right. It’s been 9 months trying to rebuild and I guess I’m the to the point where I just have no idea how to get it right. I’m going to run it like it’s not FUBAR and hope for the best. I could have dropped in two Factory crate motors on what I’ve spent trying to get this build one running.

Bummer. Or maybe it’s fine. It still sounds like a bag of nickels when it runs though.

Thinking it could be the cam profile on the exhaust. The shape of the ramps may not be noise friendly.

John wolf said it’s not normal to sound like that but like I say I’m going to run it and see what happens.

Z1s Short block is eating itself.

According to two motor builders who have looked at it, either the wrist pins are too tight or the pistons are a bit undersized (or a bit of both I suspect).

Anyhow after about 200 miles of easy break in (with break in oil) check out these totally trashed cylinders... the groves are deep enough to feel with your eyes closed. Definitely not normal at all. This motor wouldn’t last an hour at full power I suspect. The pistons are rocking with the wrist pins not “floating” in the cylinders on the oil as they should. Also notice the high carbon buildup from excessive oil blow by. That should not be there after only 200 miles of break in style driving.

Sooo... I’ve pulled the motor (again... 3rd time) and sent Z1 their block back.

They are deciding what to do about it. (They did send a shipping label so that a start)

In the mean time as the motor is again totally apart, I sent the heads to MA Motorsports. Daelen there looked em over. He says the lash and overall head condition looks good now. (After relashing them into spec here in Denver). I figured a second very experienced set of eyes could not hurt before I bolt this f-er back together... hopefully for the last time.

Ug. This has sucked.

Had rebuilt a 400 ci Pontiac motor years ago. The cylinder walls looked like this after 500 mile break-in. Motor was making some weird noise. On tear down. Found that the ring ends was butting. And the ring coating was flaking off. Ring gap was set about .003" too tight.

What does it sound like from in the cabin? Here’s a video of mine:

I’m planning to build it up piece by piece on the test stand. I’ll spin it until we chase down the source.

Lots of little bits of plumbing progress

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b7272407ca.jpg

Engine start Friday if I can get my cooling system done. All the oil lines are cleaned out and all has been removed and the extra brackets painted up. Diff cooler plumbing is coming along. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...877fa79e07.jpg

Body work is slow and I’ve got some panels out for powdercoating so I’m now officially a bit behind my August rollout schedule.

Oh well it was a soft timeline anyhow. This is supposed to be a shakedown year getting prepped for 2017 enduro racing. I’ll still be okay to get my testing done and Maybe run a race or two.

Rusty 04-10-2018 09:15 AM

Plumbing takes awhile. It looks easy in the video's on making up stainless lines.

Mclaren Can Am car! It’s fun looking that thing over for inspiration on my “little” racer.

...Okay two bays I don’t really see the thunderbird when I’m in there.

Rusty 04-10-2018 10:47 PM

I love the old CanAm cars. Heart pounders. :driving: :yum:

SurfDog 04-10-2018 11:12 PM

It’s craaaazy fast. I haven’t driven it yet but probably will have a lap or two one it’s done being restored. (An easy lap or two)
