Pics of my 370Z with 20" custom painted wheels

dieter > 370Z

I bought 20" Advanti wheels and I had them powder coated and painted with Nissan Pearl White two stage paint. I also tinted the windows 35% all around.
I plan on buying the Amuse Vestito kit as well.

Wheels with tire package $1900

Paint $1200

Nitrouz 01-23-2011 01:39 AM

ZCarMan 01-23-2011 07:42 AM

If you have time, stop by our NoVA cars and coffee on Saturdays. We alternate between Fair Lakes in Fairfax, VA and Maryland.

I'm guessing it's expensive because it's not a straight up single paint job. Prepping the wheels for different colors is intense. Looks good, though. Probably worth it.

Very cool! I second what Jon said, come on out to Fairfax one weekend. The MD/NOVA group would love to see it in person.

FWIW good shops around here will charge about $1000 to powder coat 4 19 inch wheels in one solid color, so 1200 isn't out of line depending on where he took the car.

SPOHN 01-23-2011 10:15 AM

Awesome. I got to start a journal myself.

Wow maybe California is just cheaper then... Sorry from what I see in the pics he bought black wheels and just painted the outer lip white. Didn't take the face and barrel apart to take the whole barrel.

Looks good with the color scheme though!

Yes it is not cheap. I planned about $400. But if you want a good job you must pay more. Several body shops quoted me prices. And those cheaper prices are not powder coated. So one rock chip will start your whole wheel flaking away. They had to apply many coats of paint. Then put it in the oven. Take it out, wait for drying. Then recoat. Reheat. etc.. Also pearl white is a two stage paint. So it takes longer. This shop only does wheels. Not a body shop.

Thanks. I was going to have the weels all white. But I saw a great color combo from a Porsche Cayman with a TechArt kit. Afterwards it made me change my mind.

Yes it took almost two weeks. That can't be done for $60 per wheel. I wanted it done right the first time. Actually when you look at the labor hours..$1200 is cheap. Not very profitable for a shop IMO.

I think it looks great! Might be a hassle to keep the white clean though.

Not my style but certainly unique

I've been thinking of doing about the same thing when I get my black Z.
I was originally going to go with red trim on the rims, but I like the Tron look more, so maybe a light neon blue or white trim on the rims. :)

Hell yeah its a hassle. Washes twice per week at $30 each. Can't use normal washes anymore. I had a black on black Z and it was similar. Black is harder to keep nice. But my old wheels were not painted on the sides so I could atleast use a car wash. Even though its not really good for the car.

Iscandar 01-27-2011 10:34 AM

This is where I got the idea from. I actually was going to buy a Cayman but the techart kit was around 13k.

Also if you buy the S version with options the prices are outrageous. Not a good bargain at all. And I wanted new not used. So for my budget $40k the 370Z was the only real option.

Thank you sir. With the Amuse kit it will look ok. Not a 911 TT but close.

I am disappointed with the 5.1 (0-60). I think Nissan could have gotten us into the 4's. It looks like it will do 4 something though. So we don't have to tell those who don't know lol.

I think by the end of February I will order the amuse from Jamaica. And we will see how it can be. The reason I bought the 370Z is because of the Amuse kit. I wanted a daily driver exotic. I really don't see many 370's on the road. Many 350's but hardly any 370's. And when I went to buy mine last year I saw many new 2009 models still at the dealerships. They didn't sell for some reason.

I like it! def check out the mid-a section and come out for a meet!

chuckd05 01-28-2011 01:36 AM

There a shop here on Long Island that can do work like that and charges 135 per wheel for 155 for repolish and powdered center or 135 for refinish/recolor lip and center... Its more money and work to repolish the lips so its actually cheaper to do work like you got..

I thought about doing gloss black lips with a flat black or gunmetal center but I chose a repolish with charcoal/gunmetal center... I paid 620 OTD including dismount/mounting/balancing...

1200 is a ton of money for that but the outcome seems to be exactly what you were expecting... What did they paint and what did they powder ?

Your car def looks unique and I am sure gets a ton of looks/comments... Its good to see people who mod there cars outside of the normal path everyone takes... nice job....

Iscandar 01-29-2011 11:17 AM

As I understand it they had to sand the machined polish lip and then paint it a few times after drying it a few times. It was a tedious process that took a little over 10 days. The paint for pearl white is two stage so it takes longer.

My wheels were already balanced so they only had to mount them. I don't think they removed the tires but I didn't ask.

I had clear sprayed over the black part of the rim. I bought the rims that were painted black with machined polish lip. The original black paint was dull which I hated. So now the black area is gloss and so is the lip.

One thing I can say about the wheel company I ordered from is that they didn't balance the wheels properly. I had to take the wheels to a specialty shop twice. First time to get a wheel hub that was the proper fit. And second time because the car vibrates like hell over 60 mph.

In Cali the new wheel hub fit well and stopped most of the vibrations but not over 80 mph.

When I got the car to VA I noticed much more vibration. So I took it to a wheel specialty shop. The owner showed me a very expensive balancer that is more sensitive and went over what was going on. Weights were placed in the wrong area as well.

However..the saga continues...I am still getting lots of vibration. Which puts lots of stress on the studs. I saw the wheels were balanced perfectly. So the wheels are not bent thank god. Apparantly when you get low profile tires and larger wheels pot holes can bend your wheels easily.

In my case I think the tires could be defective. I can't think of anything else. And the tires wheels only have less then 1000 miles on the car. So I might buy a new set of tires and see if the ride changes.

chuckd05 01-30-2011 11:32 AM

Damn. That stinks. Good luck..
