http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z/harness_bar.jpg

Don't mind the messy floor... the dog tracked in mud this morning and I haven't had time to mop. :(

Now I have to get off my *** and get some seats and harnesses. I'm having a really hard time deciding on seats so I keep dragging my feet on ordering them. I think I may go ahead and order a Status Ring GT and see if that's too wide for me. If it is I'll go ahead and throw it in the passenger side and get the regular Ring seat for drivers side.

The winter mod list is starting to get really long:
  1. Front control arms
  2. Coilovers
  3. Power steering cooler
  4. Oil cooler top bracket
  5. SS clutch line and clutch fluid flush
  6. Seats/Harnesses

Thankfully I was able to store the car in my friend's garage this year so I can work on it instead of just staring it in my driveway. Unfortunately I haven't had time to get over there long enough to even get it on stands yet and the weather has been beautiful.

I just purchased a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD with the 6L engine and want to find a trailer if I can find a place to keep it. My winter car died so the truck is coming a little earlier than I expected (also thanks to GM discounts/incentives!).

Already signed up for ZdayZ and a couple of track days at Grattan this summer. Should be a great year!

sig11 03-21-2012 06:50 PM

Well... Got the coilovers on but have a problem I can't seem to find the cause of. The left rear spring perch is adjusted for the maximum height (adjuster rings all the way at the bottom) and the right rear spring perch is adjusted for minimum height. Can not figure out why that is. The RR shock is at it's maximum length which left the spring at right about 1/2" of preload while I have the recommended .25" preload on the left.

All four corners are right around 1" lower than stock as is anyway. I may take it to my friend's shop and have him look at my issues with the rear. :( I'm about ready to throw these things in the garbage.

Jamaica 03-21-2012 06:59 PM

what type of coils did you get?

sig11 03-21-2012 07:14 PM

They're BC ERs with swift springs. Bought used a little over a year ago but this time last year I busted the front right adjusting the height and decided to leave them off for another season.

Can I have something go right for a change? New seat arrived yesterday and it fits perfectly. BUT....

http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z/seat/seat_base.jpg
Too low on the left side...

http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z...ooked_seat.jpg
Makes the seat crooked

http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z/seat/too_high.jpg
and makes me sad

I guess I'm on the hunt for a lower profile seat bracket or I just can't run racing seats in the 370Z.

zguynate 03-25-2012 03:08 PM

Maybe get some washers and longer bolts for a quick fix?

Also how tall are you?

sig11 03-25-2012 03:51 PM

The difference is too great for washers, IMO.

I'm ~6'5". With the stock seats my helmet nearly touches the roof...

You must be all legs :) I'm 6'0" and my helmet is rubbing the roof in the stock seats. Hoping the new seats will get me a little lower.

Maybe you can get a shop to modify those brackets if you cant find another?

sig11 03-26-2012 07:42 AM

I am all legs. heh. If I sit in the 'wrong' position my helmet rubs. I have the stock seat cranked as low as it can go too. :)

I've been convinced to call V2motorsports about the coilover problem today. They have built at least 1 T2 Z (and the driver walked away from an amazing flip at mid-ohio) I'm going to see if they can do the seat and harness mounting at some point too.

sig11 04-02-2012 04:05 PM

Well... this was fun. I was about 10mph faster than my normal turn in it looks like... that was enough to let the rear wheels slide I think. Next time brake harder into turn one. :) I realized I wasn't going to save it and tried to get straight but I wasn't really fast enough.

Mid-Ohio off track turn one on Vimeo

I've got some more fun videos to post soon. Hopefully I'll get to post them tonight.

wstar 04-02-2012 04:23 PM

That didn't look too bad at first, did you lift the throttle while correcting maybe? In any case, good outcome, nothing broken I assume :)

sig11 04-02-2012 04:48 PM

I don't remember lifting but it's hard to hear the engine over the tire squeal in the video. Nothing damaged but my pride and a clip popped out of the FL splash guard. Going to put 'er up on stands soon to double check everything.

I knew the instructor in the Mini... after the session she came up and harassed me and said her student felt bad. :P mini driver: "I think I made him do that" instructor: "He did that all himself." hah

sig11 04-02-2012 05:10 PM

Damnit! I JUST realized that I forgot to plug in the OBD-II reader!

ChrisSlicks 04-02-2012 05:13 PM

Better the kitty litter than the fence I suppose :)

Definitely turned in with too much speed, I'm surprised you didn't try to brake a little deeper after you realized you were coming in hot, but the shape of the track doesn't seem to give that much freedom. Cold tires probably didn't help either.

sig11 04-02-2012 05:22 PM

I think if I had tried to brake again I would have done a 360 right in front of traffic...

Pauly 04-02-2012 07:38 PM

nice journal. props on the turkey

No I didn't mean brake again after you were turning, I meant stay on the brake pedal longer after you realized that you missed your mark. But if you hadn't realized that you missed your mark then obviously that is of no help :)

sig11 04-02-2012 09:31 PM

Yup! Exactly. If I had been a touch harder on the brakes I would have been fine. I just misjudged my speed.

Thanks Pauly! He was tasty!

https://vimeo.com/39718151 -- Sunday session with traffic.

One more to edit still. Friday I chased an instructor in a Z06 around. For an instructor in a more powerful car he was moving pretty slow.

sig11 04-04-2012 01:21 PM

Last video for now. This is probably the best video of the weekend. Friday afternoon I got to chase down an instructor in a Yellow Corvette Z06. It seems so weird to me that I was able to catch and pass an instructor in a more powerful car. I think he may have been on r comps too but I'm not sure.

wstar 04-04-2012 01:41 PM

Nice vids :) I love that your tires are singing so consistently in the corners

sig11 04-04-2012 01:54 PM

Thanks! I think I'm going to try a set of R-comps this summer. Need to put my stock wheels up for sale to subsidize a set of 18" wheels. :)

I only wish I could see out of a mask well enough to drive with one. I had two in the car. :P

sig11 05-04-2012 01:58 PM

Car's at V2 Motorsports now having a custom seat bracket made and the harness bar I picked up from BTGV8 installed. I may be talked into an AiM Solo while it's there as well. :)

Hopefully I get it back before my detailing appointment next Thursday at 8AM. Fingers crossed!

sig11 05-15-2012 04:55 PM

WOO! Seat and harnesses finally in. (click for bigger)

http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z...ew_cabin_t.jpg http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z...nal_seat_t.jpg http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z..._bracket_t.jpg http://reprehensible.net/~sig11/370z...ness_bar_t.jpg

Drivers side is a Status GT-X with Schroth Profi-II 2" 6pt harness (for HANS). Sitting on a custom seat mount made by Ralph Provitz at V2 Motorsports. Ralph also installed the lot of it. SUPER stable. No wobble at all from the seat/mount. Ralph does really great work.

Passenger side is still stock with a G-Force 3" 5pt harness. Sub-belt was run between the back and the seat so it can actually do it's job. Soon I'll get it together and order another GT-X for the passenger or just throw in this OMP TRS-II that I've got laying around.

Harness bar came from Robin Bailey BGTV8 at the370z forums. Many thanks to him for spending the initial cash to build these things. Nice and sturdy!

After ZdayZ I may have to figure out how to re-mount the 3pt belts in the car. I intended to have Ralph keep them in but I didn't communicate that properly. Not sure how much of a pain in the *** it will be to drive with the 6pt all the time... or the legality... or if it's too much trouble to put the 3pt back in anyway.

Picked up an AiM Solo from Ralph also. All these new toys! AND I've got a set of used A6s waiting for me at Mid-Ohio Monday.

Nice save at the end. Seems like you had good control during the spin.

sig11 05-15-2012 05:23 PM

hah! We were completely out of control. Lee did the right things though and just put both feet in and kept the wheel straight. Wish I had the cabin video of it. :(

Man... watching that video now makes me think "Why the hell were we on track in that downpour!" :) So much standing water!

LakeShow 05-15-2012 05:52 PM

You shouldn't be driving with a horse in your car.

sig11 06-20-2012 02:53 PM

Well crap. I had typed up bunch of stuff about how much I enjoyed my trip to Mid-Ohio last month after ZdayZ and how much confidence A6s gave me on the track but my browser crashed and ate it.

Basically I had a ton of new toys on my 4/21 trip to Mid-Ohio including my racing seat/6pt harness + HANS, Used 295/35ZR19 Hoosier A6s, and an AiM Solo data logger. Knocked 5 seconds off of my best time on street tires in March and it was 80F rather than 50F. I think I have a good bit of time I can still pick up with all that rubber too.

I guess I'll just post the video. Has data from my AiM Solo too: 3Balls Racing Mid-Ohio 5/21/2012 on Vimeo This is my last session of the day. I am sure I would have been able to tick off more 1:45s or better had I not boiled my clutch fluid.

Would love to hear critiques/opinions! :)

Oh yeah.. I found passing in odd places really fun. We did open passing with point and I took some low speed passes over Madness and a couple high speed passes out of Thunder Valley through turn 12 over the weekend. Something oddly satisfying about that.

wstar 06-20-2012 04:09 PM

Nice laps! :)

My only peanut gallery comments are about the hands/arms relation to the steering wheel. Seems like your home position is slightly high (more like 10&2, should be more like 9&3), and then your arm seems to be fully extended by the time it reaches the top of the wheel in a corner. It might help to move a smidge closer (like an inch) to free up some arm length, but I donno maybe you can't because you'd bump your knees if you're tall.

sig11 06-20-2012 05:09 PM

Yep. that's my problem. I'm too tall to move forward. If I ever go the aftermarket wheel route I'll probably get a little extension for it. I don't like hands at 9&3 because of the wheel spokes; they just seems to get in my way.

I'm actually fairly proud of my times. I'm only 4.4s off of my friend Dominic's TTB monster. With another day or so I could probably pick that up I think. I have way more rubber than he's allowed. I'd probably be classed into TTA which means I would need to pick up a lot of time to compete with C6s. :)

ChrisSlicks 06-20-2012 05:47 PM

I have the same leg issue, however I compromise my legs for the sake of closer arms. If you can keep a break in your arms at all times you feel a lot more in control and can actually make faster steering inputs. 3-balls will be back at Mid-Ohio in September, if i can make it happen I really want to go.

sig11 06-20-2012 06:17 PM

I might try shifting the seat forward a bit on the street. It's fairly difficult to adjust but not impossible.

October you mean? I've got my fingers crossed that I can make that trip too. All depends on harvest... Mid-Ohio is such a blast. I just realized recently that it's the track I've been to most now.

Next weekend is GingerMan and my first time camping in my new trailer. That should be fun. Hopefully the AC can keep up with the heat it looks like we'll be having. I'll have to find some way to make coffee too. Hmm.

ChrisSlicks 06-20-2012 06:27 PM

Sorry yes, October 27-28th. I've never been to Mid-Ohio but everyone says it is such a great track so I really want to check it out.

You have A/C in your car trailer? Sweet! I have electrical installed in mine but no A/C, I would definitely camp in it if I had that.

sig11 06-20-2012 06:36 PM

Yep! I had to go to PA to get it but it was well worth it. I think I got it for a song. It would be so much easier to strap in the car if It was 6" wider though. :) I need to get a winch so I don't have to crawl out of the hatch when I load it.
