I'll come along for a drive and brunch almost anytime. Let me ride along one or two times to see what's involved and I'd be glad to take my turn as lead.

Here's an excerpt.

"Last Thursday the OCPD posted on Facebook reminding citizens the department has a zero tolerance policy regarding traffic violations and the police will be addressing vehicle equipment and modification violations made that would fail the vehicle during Maryland inspection, and the vehicle would be impounded."

The rest of the article is worth a read. I've been thinking about going down Oct 9-12 for Endless Summer Cruisin' 2014, but now I'm not so sure.

I keep telling people not to go down there in the off-season. It's a money making racket for the city. They will impound your car if you have a modified exhaust, camber and hold your car hostage until you pay up. It's really stupid.

I'm pretty sure the initial backlash from the city was due to idiots doing burnouts and drag racing down costal highway etc but now it's just free money and the idiots just keep on coming.

I don't feel like getting caught in the crossfire.

That said, I've been down there in the summer and haven't had any issues.

Shoup confirmed on Wednesday that he has no plans to make H20i a sanctioned event in Ocean City.

“There is no reason for me to sanction the event in Ocean City because the event is not held in Ocean City. My event has always been outside of the city. The people that choose to come, whether it is a spectator or a participant, they have the choice where to stay,” he said. “As far as my putting forth efforts to control crowds, that is near impossible. The event as a whole is not the problem. As we have discussed in these meetings [with town officials], the event at Fort Whaley campground has never had an issue, so unfortunately whatever issues Ocean City is incurring is based off of the individuals that are staying in Ocean City.”
This right here is why the OCPD target the event. If this dickbag were to y'know..work WITH the city instead of saying, "lol not my problem", I bet you'd see a change in the attitude of the police instantly.

Seriously, what a douche. It's his event, his responsibility not only to the city that the event invariably invades, but to the participants that are getting harassed and having their cars impounded over BS.

What do you want to bet that the muscle car event is sponsored by the city or is at least a "sanctioned" event?

I was wondering why they never sanctioned the event since it brings in so much money, but after reading about it I can understand. OCPD did say that they would be better prepared for the event next year for the event. I get the feeling they know it's a big money draw so they won't ban it from what I get from the article I read. It's more of a attitude like we won't ban it just have more police. I was in OC in the summer had no issues. Cruise week is sanctioned from what I read.

Let me clear some things up.

They do not impound your car for anything other than unsafe camber...meaning if all tread is not in contact with the road or if its more than -3.5 degrees.

The media/internet is making this out to be a horrible event. I spoke with a few different police officers and they all really seem to enjoy the event. The same was told to alot of friends who inquired with different officers as well. They get to see alot of crazy cars and it makes for good training. The crowds are easy going and accepting of the consequences from breaking certain laws. Everyone knows the deal down there. Cops know what we will do and we know what they will do and no one really gives anyone a hard time. Everyone seems to pull over asap and are ready to take their ticket. Almost everyone plans a ticket budget as well. Its really no big deal to have a few out of state tickets.

They really only go after the stance crowd to be honest. Plenty of cars louder than my Z there that had no issue.

I honestly had a great time doing burnouts and drifting U turns and rolling with a fun and energetic crowd. There wasnt one car I couldnt pull up to in traffic and hold a conversation with the driver and his passengers. And the amount of locals that came out and sat in lawn chairs along the streets to watch the cars go by was shocking. A lot of elderly people were out and about.

The town will probably never put a stop to this event. Hotels couldve sold out twice over...the police make a 2 month quota in 2 days. Money talks.

Its a blast. Def wroth going to atleast once. Its almost impossible to explain how it feels to be there. The atmosphere is like nothing I have ever expereinced. Everything you can imagine is there...Ferrari F40s, W8 Passats, GTRs, Turbo Dodge Charger, old muscle cars, all of the stancy nancy VWs and hondas s2ks, Zs, mini trucks...etc. The nice thing was that no one seemed to be really hateful. It seemed that no matter what you were driving everyone was there to just have a good time with each other.

No, this is wrong. Anything deemed "unsafe" will get your car impounded. The definition of "unsafe" is pretty vague so I suppose it would depend on who pulled you over.

Nah, there's some demonizing going on but mostly it is what it is. I don't see any wild accusations flying around. It is what it is. A bunch of import enthusiasts (mostly kids) get together over a weekend and look at cars. Some of them do stupid unsafe **** and the police ticket (and sometimes impound) thousands of vehicles.

Except that MD, DC and VA (along with Delaware) share points etc so that doesn't really work out for many people who post here.

See the link above. Many, many people got tickets for exhaust noise/modification, exposed intercoolers, ride height, and a bevy of other stupid crap including that "poor" F40.

Acting the fool on public roads isn't my thing I guess. The atmosphere is cool though.

Of course they won't but the city won't stop targeting the event until the organizers change their tune and maybe work with the city instead of the "lol F you" approach.

eastwest2300 10-02-2014 07:51 PM

So mark I take it you won't be making it out any time soon?

:icon08:

dmhenderson 10-02-2014 08:08 PM

I've been to two H2O(s). Once back when it was a predominately euro import event and once again 3 years ago. I won't be going back.

Not knocking it - it's a lot of fun but there are a *lot* of idiots that are ruining the event and the lack of cooperation from the event organizers is going to hurt it in the long run.

Asheth 10-02-2014 08:11 PM

I have never been, but I feel there is a middle ground for the event. I may have gotten pulled over for no front plate I would have passed everything else. I see the one side like what Mark is saying and the other side. There is a Facebook group MCM Maryland car meets and their was plenty of live information being put out but most seemed to enjoy the event.

I'll be going next year to see for myself, I'll probably being to cruise week next weekend since I hear it's a similar atmosphere.

dmhenderson 10-02-2014 08:14 PM

Again, I'm not trying to talk you out of going but it's a crap shoot. If your car is modified, you risk ticketing/impounding. Even Cody said that people come "with a ticket budget" which is about the dumbest sh*t I've ever heard. Do you enjoy giving money away? I don't.

There are tons of enthusiast events where people don't act like dipshits. This just isn't one of them. I'm sure if I were 18-25 I would love it too.

A modified exhaust is not unsafe. I literally spoke to police about what they are focusing and it was all extremely low/extreme camber

That sucks

The link you posted showed a stock F40 and a car with a missing front bumper. Have a properly modified vehicle and you most likely wont get hit. My BMW has a viewable intercooler stock and I didnt get pulled over.

Of course they won't but the city won't stop targeting the event until the organizers change their tune and maybe work with the city instead of the "lol F you" approach.

Why should it be their problem? H2O owners cannot help that a bunch of other car enthuisasts stay in a town somewhat near the show. They send out a message on social medias and website promoting safe behavior and to be respectful but you cannot control a persons actions. Most of these people dont even go to the show they just show up for a weekend in OCMD.

I see why you guys think a ticket budget is dumb but alot of people go down there to let off steam and have one last big hoorah. For the points exempt people they know they can act a fool/show off a bit more because its just money...Id rather plan accordingly incase some cop does deside to be a jerk and pull you over for say...not wearing a seat belt and add on too low, too loud, no front plate, you scraped back there...etc.

I dont really condone all of this reckless behavior but there are a lot of hypocrites in here. Ive seen how some members of MAZOC would drive during these "Cruises" and its about the same as what you see at this event except people know what will be happening during H2O.

MyKindaGuise 10-03-2014 07:50 AM

From ocean cities website

According to OCPD Public Affairs Specialist Lindsay O’Neal, officers and citizens made 2,148 calls for service from Sept. 25 to 28, comparable to 2,207 over the Thursday-Sunday span last year. Arrests this year totaled 51 versus 54 last year.

But these numbers are well in line with other automotive events. Earlier this year, Spring Cruisin’ logged 2,138 calls for service and 50 arrests over the same four-day stretch, O’Neal reported.

Oh my the are in line and similar to other car events there. Clearly this young h2o crowd is the worst. Also the H2o weekend had less arrests and services calls than non car events such as Dew Tour.

dmhenderson 10-03-2014 07:56 AM

More drunken idiots at the Dew tour. Most people are smart enough not to get hammered and drag race down Coastal Highway (hopefully).

How is "arrested" being used here? "Arrested" as in "traffic stops" or "arrested" as in "taken to jail"?

Arrested as in cuffed and stuffed haha.

No mostly everyone drinking was standing roadside chanting "light em up" or "4 wheel peel"

I take issue with this:

Because it wouldn't take any effort at all to work with the city to make the event safe(r) for both the town and the event but the organizer can't be bothered. Also let's not be coy here, the car enthusiasts are there for H2Oi which has become something bigger than what it was when it was initially conceived. Both the organizers and the city know that.

As for being a hypocrite, I've been on exactly one of those "cruises" and really was not aware of what I was getting into when I showed up. Also should point out that the cruise took place on deserted mountain back roads, not a crowded 3 lane highway.

eastwest2300 10-03-2014 08:07 AM

I'd just like to say this... (notice how eastwest has stayed OUT of this conversation, and had NO part in instigating anything, just throwing that out there).

dmhenderson 10-03-2014 08:09 AM

Im not really sure how they could work to make it safer. Everyone keeps saying that but never has any solutions or ideas. Almost no one goes for H2O, im being serious when I say its just enthusiasts showing up for a weekend. Its just a weekend known to have alot of other enthusiasts there so even more come. The 3-4 VWs that I went down with didnt even go to the show. Its overpriced and over run by APR.

As for being a hypocrite, I've been on exactly one of those "cruises" and really was not aware of what I was getting into when I showed up. Also should point out that the cruise took place on deserted mountain back roads, not a crowded 3 lane highway.

Im not blaming you and you are also not the only one who has said something to me about this. Deserted roads are the worst because none of those people that live out there will be expecting cars doubling or tripling the speed limit. Not to mention most of us here are not professional drivers and accidents can and will happen. Sometimes the greatest danger to you is...you.(Not saying you specifically mark haha) There could be kids crossing streets or running out of driveways or cars doing the same and they wouldnt be exopecting that. At H2O YOU KNOW what is going on and what is to be expected. Also Coastal Highway was high traffic and there was no way to get above 60-70. Drag racing really wasnt a thing there during the 8am-2am peak hours...maybe late in the morning when the roads cleared.

dmhenderson 10-03-2014 08:18 AM

So I should probably explain that I had "cruises" with my old car club (Md Z Club/ZCCA) where they were exactly as-advertised. Maybe a little bit of speeding but mostly we'd drive around in the country, find a place to eat and enjoy the scenery.

I was not expecting what the MAZOC "cruises" turned out to be. My girlfriend certainly wasn't. I mean it was fun and all, but I wouldn't do it again for multiple reasons, high among which is that I am so goddamned tired of repainting the front end of that f'ing car.

Oh I think excessively cambered cars look terrible. Like a little kid stepped on a matchbox car and broke its wheels but to each his/her own I suppose.
