when does MAZOC plan on leaving (returning home) on the following sunday?

I'll defer to Mustang Steve, but usually we depart early Sunday morning, and cruiZe together to Ashville for B'fast at the Crackerbarrel - at that point the Marylanders usually head east on 40 and the Virginian's head north on I-26....

Yeah I think it's a good idea to leave as early as possible :)

I usually run the dragon again on my way out, very early in the morning, without anyone else, cutting up through Knoxville.

:iagree:

I want to say we are normally at check out starting around 6AM. We hit the road as soon as everyone cruising out with us is finished checking out and loading up.

Me too. It is a pretty drive that direction as well. I have not decided yet if I want to have a hot run that morning. I guess it depends on how much "night" I had.

Looks like a section of 441 is undergoing single lane closures for construction. This will likely have an impact on our Clingman's dome trip. Trying to figure out some alternate routes.

From the NPS:

Newfound Gap Road (US-441) - the section of the road from Chimneys Picnic Area for six miles up towards the crest of the mountains will be paved this summer. From May 8-June 15 and from Aug 15-Sept 30, motorists may encounter single-lane daytime closures. Traffic will be directed through the construction zone by flaggers. No daytime closures will occur from June 15-Aug 15. At night, single lane closures may be encountered from May 8-Sept 30.

Clingman's Dome is just about in the middle of that 6 mile stretch of one lane roads. Since we're doing this on a Thursday, I think we'll be fine. We just might have to deal with a bit of a delay getting up there where the road goes down to one lane. I remember last year there was construction up that way which caused some delay, but I don't remember if we were funneled down to one lane or not.
