The spread on gas prices
Anyone noticed this recently? I can remember when the different between 89 / 91 / 93 (most common around here) was 5 cents per grade. Yesterday, I saw a station where it was 89 was $3.01 and 93 was $3.40. Now, that's a huge spread. Even factoring in an overall increase, the spread still seems out of control. Nearly 4X what it was just a couple years ago.
Anybody know why? Because they can? I'm just going to guess that it's because of the number of newer cars that require premium and 'because they can'. |
I've noticed it's about 10 cents per grade bump. But sometimes it's more just because... I don't know exactly, but I've noticed that some gas stations stick to about 8 cents and some stick to 12 cents.

I have almost always seen it be .10 per grade as well, but thats always been on the east coast.. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Anything beyond a 1.50 a gallon is too much of a spread if you ask me. We are still getting azz raped at the pump even at 2.65 a gallon here in texas.
|
its been .15 per grade ever since the first huge price jump 5 or so years ago here in Atlanta.
If you think about it though, its more of a bargain now to buy premium. When gas was $2 and premium was $2.20, you were paying an extra 10% for premium. At 3.50/3.80 per gallon, you are only paying an additional 8.57% |
I have always found it funny that people will go out of their way to save 5 cents a gallon by going to a specific gas station, only to put in 8 gallons of gas and save 40 cents :rofl2:
