Speeding Ticket in Montana

Hey Guys,

So I drove down to Montana this weekend with the car for a nice long road trip. Got caught doing 79 in a 70 zone. What was weird about this whole ordeal was that the cop said it was only a $20 fine? Is that even a thing? 20 bucks seems very low but ok whatever. He went back to his car with my info and took about 20 mins to come back and walked me through the ticket and then asked if I had cash to pay it right there on the spot.

Is that legal in the US? It seemed very fishy and up here that would be considered trying to bribe the cop and end you up in more of a mess than anything else. I didnt have any US cash on me and he looked disappointed but gave me a website I could go to to pay the ticket.

For all I know this was on the up and up but after we got back on the road and thought about it a little more it seemed very fishy to me.

Anyone have any experiance with this?

Mitch

Hey now he pulled me over to ask me where he could find some for his cruiser he was so impressed with it.

If you are from "out of state" they may collect the fine from you on the spot. I don't think he was trying to get lunch money from you. :icon17: I believe some states have credit card machines even (I'll have to look for a source for that "fact" lol )

i dont know but i heard something about montana's rural roads as kinda being the autobahn of the USA... so that might be just the way it is.

Montana used to have no speed limit.

So they imposed this "fine" at first as a pollution fine, and it was $5 (People used to carry envelopes of $5 bills). But I guess it's $20 now, lol

So your saying I could have been doing 90mph and it would have been the same fine? Damn I shoulda checked in with you guys before heading down there. lol

Ill be sure to be holding a can of PlastiDip for Kenchan. lol.

The $20 just threw me off. Up here the minimum is around 100 bucks.

I can see that. Here our parking tickets are over $20.
I can see a good avatar if that plastidip pic surfaces .

A typical parking ticket in Alberta is $50.

Yah, that's wat I remember too...thus the american autobahn..

A dozen doughnuts in Montana - $20

Your "speeding ticket" - $20

Can't be just a coincidence.

I was also pulled over in Montana back in 2007 when I was driving cross country from PA to WA state. I was doing at least 95mph. The cop said I could pay on the spot or they would mail me the citation. I was pleasantly surprised it was only 20 bucks so of course I paid it right then and there.
