I find the ignore list more annoying than "manually" ignoring the user.
A thread littered with "This message is hidden because Ignored User's Screenname is on your ignore list." only serves to remind you how much of a tool that person is every time you see it.

True, but the downside occurs when other members that you aren't ignoring are engaging in a conversation with the user on your ignore list and the side you're seeing seems interesting enough to make you want to un-ignore that user so you can get the whole conversation.
