Question for you guys. After swapping springs on the front struts, they don't align inside the strut tower and the bottom strut mount...does that mean I have to compress the springs , loosen the top hat and redo?

You can use a large screw driver (or anything that fits in the lower strut hole) and turn it until it's at the proper location. (leave the top of the strut bolted to the strut tower)

Will this put extra stress on the strut by twisting it into position like that?

Did you mark your hat before you took it off the car?

The orientation is important

They have machines that do it at the factory. Also Mike the powdercoater has recommended it, and I did it on my own vehicles without undue stress on the struts.

The alternative is to remove them and redo the strut/spring install off the vehicle.

Edit- Do you have the top hat located in the proper location in relation to the strut tower? It's just the bottom of the strut that is out, I assume?

It would be awesome if 300 of you chipped in $2 each. Then I could buy 600 powerball tickets. If we hit the jackpot each if us would get $1 million. :)

Well, when I win it tonight, I'll send you $100,000. Deal?

Probably, but then there's the exchange rate, so it's like $3 in Loonies.

These girls at work told me they spend $20 on a cup from Starbucks.

I asked what kind of drink they got, they said, "Nothing. It was just a cup." Really? :shakes head:

I think I'm just going to have my oil changed by a local shop w/a lift. It's just easier and he's trust worthy.

The springs were swapped by a local shop. I don't have a vise and $25 at a local shop
is cheaper than buying vise.

I assume I need to have it redone. If the top hat Is in proper location the bottom is out and vice versa

You don't need a vise. too late now, but you crack loose the piston shaft nut while on the car.
Spring compressors are cheap to get too.. highly recommend having a set. :)

I have a spring compressor.

Yes, needs to be redone, but without knowing the orientation, chances are you might run into the same problem. If this is your stock strut, you can probably use your impact to loosen the piston nut if you have a spring compressor.

Just hold the strut snug. Double check on impact use. Stock dampers are usually ok
Coilovers are nono for impact use.

kenchan 05-18-2013 08:40 PM

I used impact on my fit's strut when I did its swifts last yr :p
Adjustable dampers break when you impact their shafts.
