Cracked iPhone 5 screen. Options?

Bought phone at release. Past te 30 day. I think it's 30 day limit to get AppleCare ?

Anybody have experience with getting it replaced ?

Should've bought a case, best investment you could've made. Anyways your practically SOL. Cracked screen is not covered under warranty if any sort and would not be accepted as a return even within policy date as you caused the damage. Go to an electronics repair shop and hopefully they can install a new screen for about $50 or more.

iPhone 5 Display Assembly (821-1451-06, 821-1452, 821-1451-06, 821-1452-06) - iFixit

This site is pretty good and they offer step by step tear downs on almost any product

Ni55anPat 10-27-2012 10:26 AM

Haha. I'm stuck with this phone :(

iFixit is great. I broke the back glass when I had an iPhone 4. Ordered the kit for 30 bucks. It comes with the proprietary screwdriver and glass plate. Took me 2 minutes to switch it out.

The front glass is a lot harder to do. Someone I know ordered the front kit. Pretty much had to take the entire phone apart. Took a few hours lols.

Tapatalk & such etc

Heh. They're less sturdy than the iPhone 5, not to mention the disadvantage of using the Android OS.

Applecare won't replace a cracked screen. Damage from abuse etc isn't covered under the terms of service.

That said, the ways of the Genius Bar can be mysterious. It's worth taking it to an Apple Store and seeing what they say.

Ni55anPat 10-27-2012 01:01 PM

AppleCare won't but AppleCare + does.

They do it in store for 50

AppleCare you have within a year to add it
AppleCare + you have 30 days

1slowa$$G35 10-27-2012 02:45 PM

You can sell it for a decent price then upgrade to a gs3

nick3237 10-27-2012 03:02 PM

Just bring it to the store, apple will give you a brand new phone for $200 in exchange for your iphone. Might be better options out there as far as cost, but if you want a brand new one it's the way to go. I did this after giving mine a nice dip in the washer machine.

Ni55anPat 10-27-2012 03:45 PM

I had the gs3 for 6 days and went back to the iPhone. Not a fan

No, not at all. I'm honestly puzzled how anyone could think that Android OS in general and the Galaxy S3 in particular would be superior. Except for Android/Galaxy fanboys and Apple haters, of course. Their lack of objectivity is obvious.

Are you one of those?

This. I dropped my i5 about two weeks ago getting out of my truck. Destroyed my phone. I took it to Apple the next day and purchased a new one and they allowed me to add AppleCare +. It didn't cover that incident though, so I had to buy the replacement phone. Ended up spending about $280 for the replacement and AppleCare +. Was pretty bummed I had to drop the money but I was happy I had my phone back with little to no hassle.

Apple owns hardware wise, but android is definitely the more versatile OS. I've owned both, so I consider myself pretty objective. At the end of the day people need to get what they like and stop getting butthurt when people like something else.

OP, pretty sure you'd have to bring the phone in for inspection when adding AppleCare+. I'd take it in to see what they say though.

Ni55anPat 10-28-2012 11:33 PM

apple can exchange my phone for a new phone for $220, not too bad (guy told me on phone)

Or go through verizon's 3rd party insurance, it's $159....i kinda got lucky....

still sucks!

Posting this on a Macbook Air. I have an iPad right next to me.

My phone will always run Android. iOS isn't bad, but the flexibility of my phone is superior in every way. It's just a way more open system, and if you like tinkering, it's fantastic.

I think iOS makes a better tablet OS. I haven't used Windows 8, though.
