It is however your standard waste of government funds... For some reason that project has been cancelled and restarted 3 times... They only just NOW have an actual airframe actually modded, they just have to make sure that the laZOR can maintain full power in air... Then come the 'simulated' tests...

The ABL does not burn through or disintegrate its target. It heats the missile skin, weakening it, causing failure from high speed flight stress. If proven successful, seven ABL-armed 747s will be built and assigned to two combat theaters.
That's no fun :(

What they aren't saying is where its going to be aiming...

They are trying to tag the primary fuel tank... Cause it to rupture, and detonate in mid air. They have determined even if the tanks exploded, it wouldn't be enough to trigger the nuclear warheads. They would however get launched far off of their planned trajectory.. Landing who knows where, which is the big problem with this idea.

On June 18, 2009 it was announced that the ATL was successfully fired in flight for the first time. The system was fired from a 46th Test Wing NC-130H aircraft while flying over White Sands Missile Range, successfully hitting a target board on the ground.[5]

Aug. 30, 2009 Boeing and the U.S. Air Force "defeated" a ground target from the air with the Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) aircraft
Rofl, soon there'll be no need for ammunition, but the pilots will have to go PEW PEW PEW PEW when they're shooting XD

So you'd have a big chunk of radioactive material landing God knows where? Oh, that's absolutely BRILLIANT! I don't want to die in a huge fireball, I'd rather rot and die from cancer!

"The primary laser beam is generated by a megawatt Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) located at the rear of the fuselage, which lases at 1.315 micron wavelength."
