I-95 cameras snap speeders, spark controversy

Quote:

RIDGELAND, S.C. – As Interstate 95 sweeps past this small town along South Carolina's coastal plain, motorists encounter cameras that catch speeding cars, the only such devices on the open interstate for almost 2,000 miles from Canada to Miami.

The cameras have nabbed thousands of motorists, won accolades from highway safety advocates, attracted heated opposition from state lawmakers and sparked a federal court challenge.

Ridgeland Mayor Gary Hodges said the cameras in his town about 20 miles north of the Georgia line do what they are designed to do: slow people down, reduce accidents and, most importantly, save lives.

For your safety... that's what they always say. :icon17:

I just got back from South Africa and they have speed cameras everywhere. Funny part is that I rented a car and didn't realize what the little sign of a projector under the speed limit meant until 10 days into my trip.

I love it when you have pro-speed camera people on a news paper raving about how the world is safer now.

but I remember an article coming out saying that traffic jams on highways would be reduced if everybody drove fasterj even saying people speeding solve traffic jams since people tend to follow speeders.

they were screaming about how the investigation and article is ********.

I tend to follow speeding cars myself. its pretty usefull at night. leave some space between you and that guy and if you suddenly see a flash hit the brakes.

no problem.

I call that 'having them run interference'. It's the best way to use your radar detector.

The only radar detector I have is

http://www.misterspeedcontrol.nl/med...ini_coyote.jpg

anything else but that system or something like that is highly illegal over here.

m4a1mustang 03-28-2011 02:11 PM

No radar detectors allowed here in VA (boo!) so after 10 years of driving you really learn how to use other motorists to your advantage. Find a group of cars travelling at the speed you want and then let them gap you by a good bit... watch their brake lights and always keep an eye on your mirrors.

Vegitto-kun 03-28-2011 02:39 PM

a customer of ours used to work for sabena so he went all over the world.

apparently in america he got pulled over and the cop said that they saw him speeding with a ******* satellite.

what the ****.

that's what I always do when I go on road trips! always worked and never had a ticket...yet! :happydance:

Satellite... I find that hard to believe. But sometimes they have aircraft flying around that will record your speed and have a ground unit pull you over.

Vegitto-kun 03-28-2011 03:30 PM

maybe the cop felt like fooling him.

him being a foreigner.

LETS SAY WE HAVE ******* SPEED SATELLITES LOL.

cptspeed 03-28-2011 03:42 PM

Its not about the speed, but rather the difference of speed from one car to the next that causes accidents. Stay out of the passing lane and use you lights and indicators. Btw, if you are coming to Florida to visit, it is against the law to drive in the left lane unless you are overtaking someone.

Vegitto-kun 03-28-2011 04:06 PM

lol if I am coming to america afterall I am not going to pay to have my Z brought over there. :roflpuke2:

m4a1mustang 03-28-2011 04:08 PM

You could just rent a Corvette.

Vegitto-kun 03-28-2011 04:26 PM

5.0 or nothing mate.

Highway 03-28-2011 04:45 PM

Trapster is a beautiful thing. You can set it up to give you a 1/4 mile warning before you get to the speed cameras. Now if they would only integrate their program with the Nissan Nav. System, then I could stop using my Garmin.

Jordo! 03-28-2011 05:04 PM

Those little LED signs that tell you your speed might actually "save lives" to whatever extent the log odds ratio of death is affected by so many MPH one drives avove the limit -- the immediate feedback probably motivates drivers to slow down, at least a bit.

Cameras that tell the driver nothing, and merely issue tickets a month later do nothing but collect revenue.

Isamu 03-28-2011 05:51 PM

the thing of these tickets is, if you ignore it, and let it go, after 140 days it goes away...
atleast thats how it is in AZ... unless you are SERVED the ticket... it doesn't count..people just get scared an pay it..

:iagree:

That is why you see those white strips across the highway. They are calculating your speed from point to point if they have an aircraft patroling that area and like mustang said the ground unit will pull you over.

Nismo221 03-28-2011 09:51 PM

But what people dont understand is a radar can not tell one on coming car from another. If two cars are coming at it, one is speeding and the other is not it has to guess which car is breaking the law. Even cops will tell you this when they are driving around and there radar goes off to a speeder they have no idea which car is speeding. Radar wave spread out as the move farther away. So also the greater the distance between the gun and the cars the wider field you are going to get reflected back. So yes I think it takes a person there to decide and judge which car is breaking the law and which car is not. But I would much rather have my V1 detector and not worry about it.

lol dare ignore the ticket over here. it takes about a week before they send another letter.

ignore it then they send you a letter warning you. its one of them letters that you have to sign to get. so if you don't get it you have to get it from the post office.

ignore that

you get a court invite.

ignore that. they come over and take away the car untill you pay the fine + extra costs for "administrative work" and ignoring the court.

a friend of mine ignored a 50 euro ticket. he ignored. in the end they took away his beamer untill he paid. in the end he had to pay 1000 euro instead of 50 so yeah....people over here always pay their fines.

ofcourse....this is for our safety.

they actually have cops specialised in operating speed cameras. they do nothing but drive around and finding new places to hide so they can protect us.
