(CNN) -- Three Pittsburgh police officers were killed Saturday after they responded to a call about a domestic dispute, two CNN affiliate news stations reported, quoting police sources.

WTAE-TV and WPXI-TV reported the shooting deaths. A suspect is in custody.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richards said five officers were wounded and would not confirm any deaths, saying "there are several families affected here."

Richards, who spoke at a news conference, said medics were unable to reach the wounded officers while the standoff was under way. She said she didn't know what prompted the shootings.

Police Chief Nathan Harper planned to hold a news conference to release more details at 3 p.m. ET at police headquarters.

Harper, who spoke briefly to reporters, said the suspect is in his early 20s, was firing from the window of his home with weapons that included an assault rifle and had lots of ammunition.

His mother was inside the house at the time, Harper said.

"Our negotiators finally spoke to him and he did surrender," the police chief said. iReport.com: Are you there? Share your story

The suspect was taken to a hospital, and Harper said he didn't know the extent of his injuries.

The standoff began shortly after 7 a.m. and ended about four hours later at a home in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of the western Pennsylvania city. Up to 80 shots were fired at a time, Richards said.

City, county and state police officers -- some clad in riot gear -- were on the scene as a police chopper hovered overhead.

Gun laws will hit the fan, nation wide! Guarantee it! To many cops getting shot dead and to many mass murders!

^ I'm sure it's in the white house agenda.

I salute these men in law enforcement, and my condolences to their friends and families.

Not too worried about it. Even if they reinstate the Brady bill, I'm set if sh1t hits the fan. Its good to be grandfathered in.

In regards to the officers, that is very sad and though it is part of the risk of the job, those families didn't sign up for this.

Sorry to here for their loss, but whatever Washington does these a$#holes will still beable to get their hands on firearms. It hurts the rest of us.

I've got a good collection as well, but I really hate to see these freaks shooting people like this. For one, the people don't deserve to be shot. And also, I am concerned that our fair government will move to disarm the people. Well, actually I'm worried that the public will ask for it!

too bad since the gun industry makes millions, it's not going to go away any time soon.
