I know the stock market is very chaotic to say the least. But I just need some pointers for a novice like myself and what stocks I should look out for. General Motors (MTLQQ) looks enticing but it maybe awhile before I see any returns. What do you guys think?

It's my job.

Don't mess with the pink sheets. :shakes head:

GM IPO coming in a few months or so.

Zeto 09-09-2010 03:55 PM

Thanks Steve! But what are pink sheet stocks and what's an IPO?

m4a1mustang 09-09-2010 03:57 PM

Pink sheets refer to over the counter traded stocks... not exchange traded. MTLQQ is Motors Liquidation Company, all the crap that GM pulled out when they went through bankruptcy.

An IPO is an initial public offering. GM, right now, is not publicly traded, but it will be soon.

CommScope, Inc.: NYSE:CTV quotes & news - Google Finance

who can explain this 30% rise today

Jeffblue 10-25-2010 11:53 AM

tip: make sure you are willing to completely lose whatever you invest. also, don't take too much to heart in what you read on those articles online like 'the motley fool' etc. there is definitely valueable information in a lot of them, but they have nothing at stake in telling you 'buy this or that'

are you looking to do short term trading or long term buy and hold?

My point was, these "secret" meetings. . . no way to know before hand?
The insiders who knew must be happy today.

Dude, if you act on material non-public information you are going to go to jail!

there are people that specialize in merger arbitrage, which is exactly what this is. then again, they pay analysts lots of money to research and get the information required to make moves and buy certain securities in order to benefit from a deal going through or going sour. but its never 100%. generally, anyone knowing that something is 100% in the market, and acting on it, will leave them in jail.

dudafunk 10-25-2010 03:26 PM

Right, what I was saying was, Friday night market close, this stock was great and nothing on the news, and now first thing Monday morning it shoots up. So some magical deal was made over the weekend? :-/
If the stock has gone up 30% overnight, some people have made money. . . sounds manipulated, no?

The people that already owned it made money, yes.

It's not manipulated as long as people trading it are not using insider information. If someone involved in the acquisition deal used his knowledge of the pending deal to buy the stock on Friday, you bet your *** he'd be going to jail.

This is all VERY normal.
