What's Up With The Price Of Gas?

Quote:

The price of gasoline's certainly lower than the record highs of this past summer. But are they low enough?

We make no allusions to intimately knowing the intricacies of the global oil production system and the resultant pricing flim-flam, but recent pricing has given us pause. The price of a barrel of oil closed below $34 yesterday, which strikes us as odd since in the late 1990's, such prices correlated to per-gallon prices at the pump between $1.25 and $1.50.

When we fueled up yesterday, prices for regular unleaded where between $1.89 and $2.00 — depending on what state we were in. Now, we aren't saying there's some kind of grand conspiracy to bilk the consumer by desensitizing them to high prices and then leaving prices at artificially high levels once oil prices fall, but the historical record makes it hard to not be suspicious. Working in the oil industry I can say it takes more than just one factor to go into what makes the gas price. The cost of a barrel of oil is a major piece, but only makes up a percent of the price at the pump. I once had a nice break down of the price at the pump and what contributed what percent, but it was an email from a few years ago.

the price per barrel went down but at the gas pumps....not much difference....dammit

Oil

I'm sure taxes on gas are much higher than they were even 10-15 years ago. Most gas taxes are flat rates instead of percentages. That could explain some of this issue. But I agree that we have been desensitized to higher prices.

NIZMOZ 02-17-2009 10:20 AM

Gas is the main reason why we went into a recession but it seems no one in the government seems to care about that.

BanningZ 02-17-2009 11:17 AM

We don't care as a nation, because we were paying $4.00 a gallon. We now know what thats like , so we are appreciative of anything below $3.00 a gallon.

Sad but true.

In all honesty, they could jack the price up to $4.00 a gallon again and get it. Just like they did before. People bitched, but what can you do when OPEC holds the reigns...nothing.

robbing us without a weapon

CrownR426 02-18-2009 09:26 AM

I think they are smart.
They know we need the gas, so they can raise it up to whatever they want to.
Look at last summer, that **** was ridiculous.

nogoodname 02-18-2009 09:29 AM

I smell price gouging on this

CrownR426 02-18-2009 09:43 AM

My area's gas prices are slowly rising again!

So I saw this thread, and decided to resurrect it like a number of zombie threads returning recently.

Prices have really started climbing around here lately. Anybody else feeling the pinch at the pump?

Damn. That's a chunk.

2theextreme 09-04-2009 05:19 AM

And that was still for under $3 a gallon....just barely under $3 but still.....I think it was around $2.89.....but I did what I said I was gonna stop doing.....drive til there is only one little light on the dash! :shakes head:

BanningZ 09-04-2009 05:21 AM

I've heard a lot of people say that we're suppose to have another "Shortage" in November. Doesn't seem to wise to me in an economy like this.

2theextreme 09-04-2009 05:24 AM

I always thought we had a 20 gallon tank....seems its only 19....I put in 18.12 gallons....I was closer to empty than I thought!

thats not good to do y0, i always fill around half.

also, in winter time..... as the tank empties, there is more air in the tank....right??
which can cause condensation and screw up ur day.....lol

so now its a habit of mine to fill at the half point.

Yeah, I had been going no lower than 1/4 tank but I went to Altered this past weekend and was already at 1/4 tank....didn't expect to loose 3 lights on the gauge in a 60 mile round trip, either. :icon14:

nogoodname 09-04-2009 06:03 AM

u got a heavy foot??

also, tanks never fill to full capacity.... fills to 80% usually.

What about those couple of times I kept squeezing the pump until it overflowed down the side of the car? I hit max capacity then! :icon17:

BanningZ 09-04-2009 06:16 AM

Could have been an air bubble shifting around the top, the pressure made it shift and helped shoot some gas out of the tank.

Very similar to the air bubble in "Das Boot"

o Maintaining a reserve capacity of crude oil

o Profit

* Refining the crude oil into gasoline -- 18%

o Producing special blends of gasoline to meet local clean air government regulations

o Transporting the gasoline to the gas station

Notice that the government probably makes a whole lot more off a gallon of gas than the actual companies that goes to the trouble of finding.refining and marketing it.
