IMHO for what it’s worth ( not much ) it’s just another way of tracking / monitoring, and in a free society ....... well you get it :rofl2:

Parts of China is already there.

Self check-outs are card only. If you want to pay with cash. You have to wait in line.

I've seen places begging for coins.

I hear you on this. I use card almost exclusively at this point for 2 reasons - first, cash is a hassle. I have to access it, withdraw it, and carry it, the first barrier to which is that my company deposits it directly in my account. Second, my credit card pays me to use it. It's not immense, but every few months I get a nice chunk of cash to use on something responsible, like car parts.

I balance this by using intermediaries - online purchases I make almost exclusively via PayPal and through as few vendors as possible. In person purchases made with credit card tend to be fuel.

I know also that my driving on many highways can be monitored since I use EZPass (in fact in my part of PA right now, the only option is to be overcharged by unmanned toll booths or use EZPass). I also know that Google surveils those of us who use Google Maps, that the Location setting on my phone can be used to track me, so on and so forth. If I'm asked if all of this bothers me, absolutely.

Can I do anything about it? Sure, but that too is a big hassle. I can move to South America, destroy my cell phone, buy products in person only with cash, drive a 40 year old truck with no electronics, and so on. I won't say that everything we do is being monitored, but I will say that it's not far off.

I'm already on page 3 of the pick-up list, so it doesn't really matter to me. I will admit the idea of moving to South America is intriguing. I've looked at Ecuador as probably the best place to go.... :shakes head:

There is nothing 'they' dont know about me already. I carry and use my cell phone, a computer and have bank accounts. Whether I pay in cash or CC doesnt really matter at all. It is virtually impossible to stay anon and use the interwebz.

Yeah, that's pretty much my point. The best you can do is limit where some of your data can be stolen from, short of abandoning society altogether (which has its appeal some most days). I also don't think it's a nefarious plot, but my libertarian leanings include not enjoying having my data sold.

Morning everyone! Coming at you live from my new house at university, hitting the road running my junior year of undergrad. Two stories, four bedroom, four bath, and three other kick *** roommates. We've been a bit busy this last week or two getting the house together and...well...extracurriculars :rofl2:

First week of classes started this week. I have one in-person class, one hybrid class where each half of the class alternates attending in person, and then three full online classes. Crazy times, but my best guess is that everything will be online within the next month. Our campus has already reported 90+ positive cases, while some colleges like UNC have reported upwards of 900+. It's only going to get worse.

Hope everyone has a great, safe day. I'll check back in again soon as I continue to get things sorted out and into routine. I've got a lot of catching up to do with this thread, lol

We might get some storms this afternoon. I love a good thunderstorm.

Leingod 08-28-2020 01:09 PM

Gotta go get some money for the golf outing this weekend and plan to stop by the new Hannford's that opened here to get some sushi for dinner.

SouthArk370Z 08-28-2020 01:58 PM

We got a pretty good storm that knocked over some trees but not an awful lot of damage in the area (you probably feel different if one of the tress fell on your house). My power went out last night and power company is saying it won't be back until late Sunday night. :( On a generator at the moment - it will almost start the central A/C compressor but not quite. :( :( :( But gen will keep fridge, a small window A/C unit in garage, and some fans running, so it's not too bad.

The way I look at it. Go there and get yourself set up. Come back here and rob a few banks (I would do an armored car myself) then fly back to Ecuador before anyone knows what happened.

madwi 08-28-2020 04:03 PM

Storms went north and south of us, again. :icon17:

JARblue 08-28-2020 04:13 PM

If I have to leave the US I would have need to conceal my identity which means an extradition treaty is pointless. Why limit yourself?

I use cash for illicit transactions and tipping. So I pretty much always have cash ;) Most everything else goes on the credit card because it is normal purchases and bills and I get airline miles as an incentive. Plus credit card companies have the best option for fraud prevention, detection, and reaction. I don't allow location services on my phone unless the app is active and I don't really do social media except car forums.

Best I can do for the amount that I give a fùck. Which is minimal.

I was thinking about uprooting your money tree :icon17: Of course, an armored car might be safer.

Well, it is pretty hard to swipe a credit card in a hookers azz crack. Don't ask how I know.

One of my ideas about a cashless economy is the government has direct knowledge of every cent you’re worth.
With The socialists tendencies of people in the country, It’s not too far off to say that, if they were in power and decided that, you had too much in your account &” for the social good and for people who don’t have as much “ or to satisfy the National debt we’re going to only let you keep x amount …just saying ;)
I know I’m half craZy but I’m having a good time :happydance:

I think the socialist angle is overplayed and overstated, but I'll admit that probably depends on where you live. A lot of people in my age range and in my area have a good bit of anger towards what they see as government overreach and poor use of funds - they're into things like paid education, but it's always AS OPPOSED TO things like spending on more military. If the parties in power were truly in favor of reducing government spending as opposed to increasing it (but increasing it for military on the Right and Programs on the Left) most of my contemporaries are in favor of that. Quite a few people are also sick of corporate welfare (again something that both left and right agree on).

Look no farther then China. They are all ready doing it. It's called a social report card. You start with 100 points. You lose points with each infraction. Lose too many and they limit your travels. No trains and planes. Can't stay in any hotels or motels. Plus they are using facial recognition too. Cameras everywhere. It's 1984.
