Morning all! Forecast looks good, so trip is a go. If I'm not back by late Saturday, send help ;)

https://www.newyorkupstate.com/catsk...ns_photos.html

That's the trail we're hitting. Taking my wife, younger brother, and a good friend, dropping a car at the end and taking a shuttle to the start point. It should be a fun trek, back either late Friday night or early Saturday.

Haha! I won't say it'll be a cake walk (wouldn't have picked it if it was) but we've done much harder treks with much less fit people and lived to tell the tale ;) Law of averages though - if I'm taking 1 person with me who I expect will struggle, I want three more who won't.

Had an issue once in the White Mountains (NH), just off the summit of Mount Washington, where one of our group had his legs basically collapse. It was in late May, but the temperature during the previous night had fallen to about 17 degrees, and we were still hiking through snow occasionally, waist deep on some portions of the ascent where the shadow of the mountain kept it from melting (and apparently does so until July at times). We had to divide his pack and help him for the next 8 or so miles of descent. He recovered pretty well by the following day, but that mixture of prolonged exertion, cold, and dehydration can be brutal.

That was a pretty awesome trip.

Dehydration is the biggest issue on any hike. I made 2 trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch and was accepted to be a ranger there the summer I went to boot camp. First trek in 1971 was probably about 25 to 30 miles, the second one in 1973 was over 50 miles. I entertained the idea of making a return trip to Philmont with one of the local Scout troops, but I'm relatively sure that would not be a good thing for me to attempt. While I'm in fairly good shape, cardio-wise; my knees are not quite up to 5 or 6 days of humping about 50 pounds of gear up and down mountain trails. :icon14::icon14: Enjoy your trip.

That's what gets my dad too at this point. He's still in good shape for cardio, still strong, but his left knee is completely shot. To quote him "I never pictured myself being one of those people that grunts going down stairs, but here I am."

Too bad, I really wish he could come along. I have good memories of hiking with him.

You don't have to be old to have that problem. Both of my knees are shot. It all started back in 1993 when I tore my left knee ACL in half. 2009 I tore my meniscus in my right knee so bad they removed 60% of it. Now, I just do the best I can. I am cussing under my breathe going up and down any stairs.

That's what got him. He's torn both of his ACL's and both of his meniscuses (menisci?). Had experimental surgery to replace his right meniscus, worked well, but cost him an entire year of rehab and a ton of medical bills, so although that leg is now back to 'normal' he's not really sure he'll do the other one.

Pepper is due for her second round of Vaccinations this week. I was looking over the paperwork from when the GF took her for her first round. The vet gave Pepper a Rabies Cert... hmm...Pepper is barely 3 months old... Rabies cert is given at 4 months... Also it took a little over a WEEK to get the results of Peppers stool sample AND we had to call them TWICE to get the results..time for a new vet... :shakes head:

Man, at that point I'd just be like "take it off and gimme a store leg."

I get that perspective, but that'd also kill my dad. He's been ultra active his entire life. Right now he can still ski, and as long as he keeps it to 1x per week, he can run (albeit with pain). Being relegated to a life without sports would be a slow death.

That's a big NO. The pain you have to endure for a knee surgery is not freaking joke not including the side affects and the limitations as was stated above. I hear this all the time from someone who has never had a major knee surgery. It really gets annoying. The day the Dr. get's me is the day I have to crawl in the dang door and NO sooner.

Rusty 07-03-2019 01:12 PM

When it's time for joint replacement. You will know when. Because you can't stand the pain. Hip replaced at the age of 47. Been through 10 surgeries. For a while, I thought my Ortho was my PCP. Seen him more than my regular doctor. As they say. My youth has caught up to me. I was not easy on my body in my younger days

My fiancee has had one knee done and will have the other one done sometime this winter. Outside of odd feelings when the weather changes, the new knee works well and doesn't give her any pain. She was up and walking on it the same day after surgery. I hear from several people that have had knees/hips done and the difference in pain level is night and day. I'm still using my OEM knees, (fingers crossed) and I hope to for many years to come. :happydance:

Not all knee surgeries are that successful. I have had people tell me their first one was great, the second one is giving them trouble.

My grandpa was 80 when he got his first knee replacement. It allowed him to continue playing tennis for a number of years. When his other knee started to go, he didn't even hesitate to get the surgery. Different doctor and it didn't go well. It was replaced twice through a number of surgeries and sidelined him for good and was always his bad knee from then on.

Joint replacements depends on how fit you are at the time of surgery and you mental state. I was walking the next day and out of the hospital the day after that. Back to work in 5 weeks. From talking with other people with joint replacements. The hip is easier to recover from then a knee. The worst thing to happen is to have the replacement done twice. Had mine done in 2003. So it's been 16 yrs. I take care of myself. I watch my weight. Being heavy isn't good. Try not to over do PT, low impact is the best. No running. That will wear out replacements faster then you think.

Been a busy day.
Come home from work. Get a bite to eat. Go horizontal in my lazyboy for 2 hrs. Get up, and go to my brothers house. Finish sawing down a tree from the storm the other day. Changed a flat tire on his truck. Drank a few beers. Get the folding chairs out and set them up in his front yard and watched the firework show from the local park.

It has been a crappy 2 months here. Not happy at all. I have 2 dogs at UGA for a necropsy trying to gives us an answer of what has happened to them. The Vet has his suspicion but we need to know for a fact. Lost another dog yesterday and one is on the way down today. Vet said there is nothing we can do. I feel helpless as hell and now I am getting very angry. The feelings my wife and I have are indescribable. Before anyone stats what they think we should have done, just stop. You are not helping. It is in the experts hands. My rainbow bridge has just filled up beyond capacity and the man up stairs will need to build a bigger one. My wife and I both are in tears.
