Best method?

Unfortunately I'll be selling my car, something I've been wanting to do for some time but haven't had the courage to do so (Its been a love/hate relationship) and has now become something I have to do, due to its size and being my only car. I'll be back, if not in a Z, in a sports car.

Anyways on to the actual question! At 70k miles, 2011 base model. The dealership was offering me 10k as a trade in so I'd rather avoid that and sell it on Craigslist. If I do, what's the best way to receive a payment? Cash is an obvious one but I am a little afraid of getting fake money.. I'm wondering what other relatively safe methods are there out there if anyone has any experience?

I can think of two pretty safe ways to do it:
1) Use a car escrow service. However, they will charge a percentage.

2) Have the buyer meet you at your bank with the cash.

If taking payment in cash, require that as much as possible be in $100 bills. The current $100 has many security features: https://d39pc38av48c2g.cloudfront.ne...3_Features.pdf

(or load from https://www.uscurrency.gov/security/...s-2013-present if that .pdf link doesn't work)

Some municipalities have setup "Craigslist exchange" locations where there is active security so you can meet to close a deal. You may want to search in your location to see if they have a location/initiative like that.

If you're going to sell it on Craigslist, do the transaction in the parking lot of your nearest police station. Plenty of people have been robbed or killed selling stuff on Craigslist. If you weren't in CA, I'd suggest having a buddy follow you there with a piece in the car, but owning a firearm in CA is a bigger felony than murder, apparently.

Also, be prepared to have a lot of your time wasted in the process.

Cash is fine but definitely meet in a public place ... NOT at your house.
