Went to my barbershop on friday.
Cut was 18 and tip was 5.

I'm bumping this thread with a story of my haircut today:

Her: How would you like it?
Me: 1 on the side, fade into a 5 on the top (referring to the razor guards they use)
Her: 5 on the top? Do you really want that?
Me: Nope, I like ordering stuff I don't really want, like anchovies on my pizza

LOL, I do a 1A on the sides, top she cuts by hand. Tip is 20%. Is that enough? Normal?

Depends. 20% of what?

I'd say it should be $5 or 20%, whichever is higher. And obviously you tip more around the holidays.

$35 for the cut, I tip $7

$35 for a cut? I don't even pay that at the upscale barber. What kind of place you getting your hair cut?

Not bad. My cuts are $40 and I tip $20, just because I'm friends with the stylist now... been going there for over a year.

IMO if you go to a regular barber, the $5 or 20% rule should be just fine. If you go to a higher end salon or something, tips are going to be commensurate with stylist experience and really whether or not you actually like them.

Typically 20% works for men. If this was LA or NY you might tip more at a high end salon, but otherwise 20% works.

My stylist has been all over the US, and says in this market 20% is appropriate and standard.

I could bump it up a little, but I also handle her husband's business accounts, and take good care of them, so we all know each other pretty well. She is also famous for canceling and rescheduling my appointments, typical hairdresser, they are like food and beverage people, march to the beat of a very different drummer. Schedules? meh, whatever :roflpuke2:
