Nissan taking care of CVT owners, warranties doubled...
Apparently Nissans confident in the long term reliability of their CVT transmissions as they've voluntarily decided to double the warranty length coverage on all CVT equipped cars. Even if the cars already out of warranty it will now be covered again until 10 year/120,000 miles. Very cool!
Nissan CVT Warranty Extension |
I've never been in a CVT equipped Nissan but they seem quite badass on paper. Is it worth the hype?

I recently had the chance to try an Altima rental car at Laredo with the CVT; at first, it feels funny, but after a while, it's just great! Plus, the gas savings are O.K.! Maybe, some time in the future, the Z will come with that feature!

Had the CVT in my previous ride.. 07 Maxima.. It wasn't bad.. it lacked on the low end and honestly don't know what kind of power you can put thru that thing.. I've been told though its really more like a trans you'd find in a lawn tractor or snowmobile.

I had a loaner 2010 Altima 2.5s and it was very, very nice. The manual mode was extremely sporty and responsive for a 2.5L 4-banger and the auto mode was very smooth and shifted well.
I was impressed, to say the least. |
CVTs are used in lawnmowers, but they are completely different type than what is used in Nissans. Read more about CVTs at WikipediaContinuously variable transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia here. Nissan uses a Toroidal type CVT.

Inevitable bottomline: Some will like it, some won't. I loved it. It just takes getting used to, that's all.

It's a good front, but actually due to them being non-serviceable and will cost the consumer 7k for a new transmission, Nissan decided to step up and solve customer complaints and issues, before they turn bad, by simply extending the warranty on the CVT.

All a CVT is, is a "Constant Variable Transmission". It's a metal flexible band between two sliding pulleys. All it is, is a different way to transfer power from the engine to the drive axle(s) of the car. It is nothing special. It has been around for a long time. It made its first appearance on the Italian Vespa motorized scooters. |
Yes, but noone has been successful with it. Look at Saturn. They finally gave up on it. Came out in the Vue. Nissan has done a great job with this transmission, and they have improved fuel economy in many of there cars, by simply switching to a CVT
