if i have a connecting flight in a country that requires a visa, do i need one?

If you're not going through immigrations then u shouldn't need it. Airport gates are like bonded warehouses where u go through without entering the country.

i have a connecting flight in turkey and i believe they require visas for american passports, but i won't be exiting the airport so i don't think i would need a visa. my layover is 2.5 hours there

Turkey has an e-visa system. You can apply online for it beforehand or do it in the airport when you arrive

Since you're just there for a layover and not exiting the airport you won't need one though
