I think i'm going to be filling my z up with cheap gas here in california, then using the money I saved up for a nice sanswich:ughdance:

You are free to do what you want, but if you spent $30K+ on a car, is an extra couple bucks per tank rally a big deal?

darkseed 11-08-2009 02:20 PM

no man i want my sandwich

nogoodname 11-08-2009 02:30 PM

just wait til the car starts to lose power and starts to run like sh!t

frost 11-08-2009 02:32 PM

Hopefully that sandwich can fix engine knock.

Take it up Conejo Grade a few times to see hot it runs! To be honest your better off with premium!

Ouch, conejo grade sucks... I used to commute there to Camarillo. Thats hell.

jpit 11-08-2009 02:46 PM

The ecu will retard the ignition to avoid engine knock but performance will suffer.

Yes it dose your engine is trying to "re tune" itself for the lower octane but it can not. You are always suppose to use the gas that is recommended.

It can only do that so much than it will knock.

nogoodname 11-08-2009 02:51 PM

ever saw that commercial where some guy is driving a beat up car and with music blasting, everyone is looking at him while he's driving.then pulls into a parking spot, turns the music off and thonk-a-thonk-a-thonk-a-thonk-a-thonk..

LOL, thought the knock was a good beat

Spot on!

It's like feeding your own baby with cheap powdered milk rather than breast milk. :)

If you can't afford premium gas like it's recommended, you should of got a prius!

mattkim85 11-08-2009 09:55 PM

When I first got my '04.5 Touring Coupe, out of sheer hard-headedness, I tried 89-octane gas for about 2 months; there was no knocking/pinging/dieseling. BUT--there's that "but" again!--I read an article in Car and Driver, where they stated that, even though the car may not knock/ping/diesel, carbon formation in the valves and the combustion chamber would ensue in just a matter of weeks! So, this hard-headed Puertorrican switched right back to 93-octane nourishment for my Zed! "He who has ears to hear..."

hey darkseed, we're just ribbing you man, you can run lower octane in a pinch, but performance will suffer like others have mentioned, premium is what nissan recommends, but it's your car..:tiphat:

yes, engine knock will come from gas that does not supply enough flash. I WILL ONLY USE PREMIUM. It's a $40k car w/ 11:1 compression!!
