Did you say "Muda"?

:icon17:

onzedge 01-26-2016 11:35 AM

Muda (無駄 ?) is a Japanese word meaning "futility; uselessness; idleness; superfluity; waste; wastage; wastefulness", and is a key concept in the Toyota Production System (TPS) as one of the three types of deviation from optimal allocation of resources (muda, mura, muri).

CFO and I were in a debate today about what causes a computer to lag and take forever to load upon logging in from a fresh startup.

A computer with a basic i3 processor and 4gb of ram. It's slow to log into the user account and become functional because of 20 programs contributed to the startup list. Is this due from the processor being limited in how much it can handle, or the amount of ram being allocated to handle these auto started resources??
My personal testing showed the CPU and disk percentages being higher than ram. I'm curious though. Would a high GB user profile contribute to a slower computer startup? Or is it strictly related to the startup programs?

kenchan 01-26-2016 03:54 PM

no its the windows pc crap..

wat? u wanna shut down? wait 2-3min maybe longer... or if im forcing u updates u can wait 5 to 60min longer :shakes head:

I'm going to guess the slower start up is due to the programs in the startup sequence. From a logic stand point, it seems that the less the processor/ram/L2 cache has to deal with upon turn on, the faster it should reach the desktop. Most places don't seem to care about how long a computer takes to become operational from a cold start, only in how well it processes the daily tasks. My work computer boots way slower than my home PC, I just turn it on and while it boots to desktop, I go get coffee. By the time I get back, it's ready. Now the fact that it is slower than molasses in January and locks up at the drop of a hat, is a whole different issue...:p

and it's a Mac... :p

kenchan 01-26-2016 03:59 PM

kinda surprised to see people are still surprised by the steering lock failures.. :ugh:

like 3+yrs ago i made the diy..

kenchan 01-26-2016 04:00 PM

This is like me implementing Dynamics AX.

Step 1: Argue
Step 2: Install Software
Step 3: Argue, configure and customize for 22 months, take 90 round trip airplane rides, stay 380 hotel nights, break in 90 rental cars (and damage 3), set fire to one Marriott

Step 4: Done

Step 5: Begin anew at Step 1 in some other Godforsaken place in the continental US

While the ram def has some to do with the startup, I personally believe the memory controller within the CPU and how much the CPU can process is what causes the sluggishness. I don't see even 4gb of ram being allocated to a dozen startup programs. 100% ram isage would theoretically cause a computer to crash.

kenchan 01-26-2016 04:16 PM

theres really no theory to windows. its like a euro car. great while it works.. dats my personal experience with them. :ugh:
