Where are the sun roofs?
I'm picking up my Z today and I'm gonna be MORE than happy with it, but I was bummed to find out I couldn't get a sun roof. I looked at a lot of other cars too, mustangs, scions, and nobody makes a sports car with a sun roof any more! Yet every minivan I see on the road has one. Is there a reason for that? Seems like sports cars should be the ONLY cars with sun roofs. Years ago I had a 2nd gen eclipse and I think the sun roof was the best part.
Am I the only one missing them? |
|
I miss them too, I'm buying a new pickup in the next month or two and it even has a sunroof.

Weight.
If you want a sunroof, buy a Lexus. If you want a sports car, these are your options. |
|
You can always get an aftermarket one done...
|
I personally do not miss having a sunroof one bit. Found this for you.

get a Q-coupe instead. |
I didn't buy the Z to race it. It's just a fun weekend car. I've just always liked sun roofs and t-tops, but not a fan of convertibles. I was just curious why the move away from it. Years ago sports cars always had the option.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in love with this car! On the first drive home last night I got some major head turns from it. After driving nothing but company vehicles for the last 8 years I forgot how satisfying that can be! |
Those head turns were to see that sticker on the back so the people know where they can get one too. And you want to take that away from the people. So if the people can't have stickers you can't have a sunroof.

I do miss the roof, civic, integra, tl, accord, g35 had one. But I fell in love with the Z so I live without it;)
|
There is a rumor next Z may have T-tops... wouldn't hold your breath tho'.
There's always a 'vert option. Sunroofs are nice, but they are also one more thing to leak, break, etc. I liked mine on all my old Celicas, but I honestly don't miss it on the Z. |
T tops like the 280zx would be awesome.
|
Just get a sawzall and have at it. Get a piece of plexiglass and duct tape and you have your sunroof!!

I'm guessing they didn't wanna include the sunroof, let alone do T-tops so they can sell more convertibles.

I remembered how much i wanted a sunroof in a car. Bought a 2004 wrx some years ago. I think i opened the sunroof 10 times in 6 yrs of ownership, dont really miss it, altough i think i wouldnt mind t-tops if the Z35 had them

Mine started leaking just before i traded in my suby for the Z |
I suppose to keep up with the tradition of some of the generations, Having T tops would have been nice... as well as easier to maintained than a convertible.

A vehicle with a sunroof loses some of the characteristics of handling. Remember the Mitsubishi Evo's, there was a base model that had no power windows, no HID, no A/C and no sunroof to mention a few. The reason for the sunroof (or lack of) was to make it lighter and more rigid.
With a sunroof the chassis has a tendency to twist more than normal and the extra weight of the glass and the motors can hurt the center of gravity thus affecting handling characteristics. I have a Venza with a panoramic view glass and whenever I go over uneven surfaces or into my driveway I can hear the chassis "twitching". I have driven the same vehicle minus the panoramic view and the chassis feels "stiffer". A sunroof or T-tops creates a "weaker" chassis sort of speak. Plus adding a sunroof can add at least 35 lbs. to the vehicle. |
