350z to G37s to 370z
 

Hello Gents,

Proud new owner of a 2011 370z here in Plano, TX. Like the title says, my first car was a 350z track ed. and I absolutely loved it. That relationship ended sooner than I wanted due to a spun rod-bearing. I thought if I bought a g37s it would calm me down a bit. Infiniti makes a nice car, but it certainly lacked the excitement I was so used to.

I had been searching for a car for months, until I finally found the one for me hiding in Houston. This car had every option available and much more. The owner of the Z had hardly put any miles on the car, and had taken excessively good care of it. He stored in a garage, under a cover! Not to mention, he had invested quite a large sum of money into some highly sought after components! Overall, I don't think the sale could have gone any better, the seller was a terrific guy. Very organized and hospitable to my brothers and I (they traveled with me from Plano to pick it up). He also sold me the car at an unbeatable price. A lucky man I am indeed. Feast your eyes!

I travel 5 days a week for work, and sometimes board 10 flights in one week. So hearing airplane turbines and such got old really fast. After about a month of owning this car, I decided I couldn't deal with the road noise any longer. I opted for some GTmat 80mil Ultra and got to work on the car. (Note: these pictures do not necessarily show finished work, just some quick snaps I took along the way). So far, the ambient noise has decreased a noticeable amount, though I might line the floors and roof too.

I think I might work on the exhaust next (yes, entirely hypocritical I know), but who doesn't love the sound of the VQ. My childhood friend owns a shop in Garland, TX called "Elite Auto Werks". He's also the owner of an exhaust brand he sells from that location, known by the name of "Beluga Racing". Their products are identical to those of TopSpeed Auto, but I can get his for free so why not give it a shot!

Will you eventually sound"proof" the floors too? I have been contemplating doing that, but have no idea how much material I would need to order; Nissan doesn't really publish interior cab floor surface area :p

You lucky son of bitch!! That would be Mike's Z (gurneyeagle here on the forum). He has taken incredible care of it and has done a lot of very tasteful and functional mods. Enjoy it! :tup: :driving:

FWIW, the GTmat is better at vibration dampening than noise. I installed their Onyx product in my hatch. Get some closed cell foam to go on top of the GTmat if you really want to reduce noise. Tires also make a big difference if you value quietness over performance.

Really? I thought the big deal about GTmat was its multi-layered design, it's supposed to offer a bit of everything so you don't have to lay down two different types of product. Now that I look at it though, Onyx does not have the top foam layer that Quadro does, so that might explain your experience.

I totally agree with you on the tires though. The OEM tires that came with my car made a really spooky sound at > 130mph ;) They don't last long at those speeds though, and after I upgraded the new tires are much quieter :rofl2:

GTMat has several products from very basic to highly functional. I think only the Quadro comes with the CCF though. And I don't think they offered the Quadro when I initially purchased the Onyx (I got it through a forum member that used to work there at the time). The OP said he used the 80 mil Ultra, which I believe is a step down from the Onyx, whereas the Quadro is a big step up from the Onyx. I'm pretty sure generic CCF is cheap, so that's the route I plan to go eventually.

Like you, I also have no clue how much material is required. I am contemplating doing this, however I am a bit skeptical in my abilities to lift out the seats without causing a single scratch. I am very OCD by nature....I will NOT create a scratch on this thing, as irrational as that may sound to some lol.

Hahhaaaa! Lucky I am indeed! :happydance: I am loving every moment I have with it when I am in town. Otherwise, it hangs out in my garage on a battery tender.

JARblue, I would have to agree with you. After taking it out for a few miles, it has become clear to me that this is less of a "sound deadening" material and more of a vibration dampener. Don't get me wrong, it still did the job, but not to the extent I imagined it would. Also, I made a mistake in my original post. Initially, I ordered GTmat 110 mil. However, the package I had received had multiple "80 mil Ultra" stickers on it. After some research and conversing with a GTmat rep, Kevin, I came to the conclusion that they did indeed send me 110 mil. I'm sure I will add some CCF in the near future. Thanks for the advice!

Congrats and welcome! What a beautiful car. Do you happen to have any more pics of the front - I think I see some brake cooling ducts up there?? Also, check out the Z Club of Texas website - we meet once a month on the 3rd Thursday in Addison. Would be cool to see your car and talk GTmat... been looking to do that forever.

Nice ride! Beluga racing/Top speed products are good. I can vouch for them. Have had my Exhaust for about 15 months or so and its in great condition to this day.
