Used exhaust

Hey guys, this weekend i am purchasing a used exhaust from a friend of mine. I was wanting to ask do exhausts ever go bad? like for mileage wise? It has normal wear and tear like scratches so I'm not worried about that. It's a fast intentions.

Yes they can go bad.

How do i know when it is bad or needs to be replaced. This one has about 20k miles on it.

It will just sound bad, rasp and such. The "fiber glass" in the muffler cans will break down and blow out eventually.

Repairable?

Look for a warped flange, holes in the piping(you can usually spot them by carbon traces that surround the hole), dings in the piping and cracks at the welds. The exhaust itself can never really go bad as it's just a pipe with sound deadening material in the muffler. It's usually cracks in the welds and dings that I look for. Other than that, you're good to go. And ask if there were any fitment issues when he had it installed, just because its the same car doesn't mean it will fit exactly and it might have been slightly changed to fit and you may have to change it back to fit yours but I doubt it.

flanges can be replaced... but as ^ mentioned check the welds and for cracks.

if you were on the coast i'd be more hesitant as the constant exposure to salts will cause rusting regardless of the care.

i'd ask to inspect once it's uninstalled prior to purchase.

gl!
