Pop Charger vs K&N Typhoon
 

While the stats on each of these products shows mild gains in HP i am looking for a deep and louder sound, vs HP gains.

I have read most everything there is to be said about each, and compared clips which from my crummy laptop speakers sounds about the same, or it is unclear what other aftermarket parts may also be a factor in producing the sound.

I live in an area of Central Illinois where car shows and meets are pretty rare. Also to find someone else who has there car equipped properly is not very realistic.


There is a $20.00 difference in the price online which makes this a draw in my book.

Anyone who has had both or heard both please chime in, and help me make sense of this next pruchase.

Neither, doing that is most likely worse than stock box as far as heat into manifold. But you will get the sound.

Leave stock and add kn filter to stock box or just keep saving for Stillen G3, AEM CAI, Nismo CAI, Takeda etc.

i did not notice any power only noise when I switched to K&N drop ins.

The gluteus maximus is a poor dynamometer overall, and registers torque more accurately than power. There is ample empirical evidence that K&N drop-ins do indeed offer gains, and these gains are further improved when combined with smoother intake tubing.

OP: Heat shielding notwithstanding, the pop chargers have nice CNC milled velocity stacks. You may need to figure out better heat shielding to get the most out of them, but in theory, they should outperform the Typhoons.

If they don't, then either (a) the Typhoons include filters with built in velocity stacks or (b) the shields it comes with are better designed, or (c) if either of the two are not EXACTLY maintaining OEM location of MAF sensors and/or intake pipe diameter, the way the ECU responds to the Typhoons (without tuning to ensure MAF voltage is scaled correctly, that is) must tend to net more favorable results.

I can only address the key issues -- I do not know of any clear back-to-back testing to refer to on this.

K&N drop ins. And yes you can feel the difference. Several dyno charts around. Not far off from the G3's for power gains and way cheaper and easier to install.

Short ram and pop chargers = horsepower loss. Not worth the noise IMO

I didn't notice any difference from stock when I put in my KN drop ins in terms of sound or performance.

Way back in the 350 days, my friend and I had the same cars. And they were even in every scenario. I got drop-ins and I ended up pulling on him every time, even with a head start. Just my .02.

Just replaced the K/N filters on the G3 CAI with a larger conical filter by R2C and there seemed to be a little more pep in her step.

The gains from long tube intakes, are generally from the flow and velocity of the air from the long pipes. Not significantly cooler air.

In my N/A Honda days (yes its applicable), once you start moving, whether its a short ram, or a cold air/long tube intake, the air intake temps get surprisingly close. Its only when the car is completely stopped does the air get "hot", such as on a dyno, even with a fan.

Again, the gains come more from velocity and flow of the longer tubes, not from the saving 5 degrees on air intake temperature.

The "hot air intake" thing was debunked a long time ago by tuners.
