if you still have the stock airbox, yes you could run without a tune, but I dont recommand it at all !

but any bored out TB , you will probably have to adjust that idle screw.
I had in my case, it didnt let the engine run lower than 1200rpm

I have G3s.
And forgive my noob-ness to this topic, but idle screw? I thought idle and such was ONLY controlled by the ECU on these newfangled cars with their computers and all?

the screw is set at factory and loctited there very hard with a jam nut

then yeah you can set the idle tru the ECU.

but having it bored out, you have more air comming thru the plate because the butterfly still close at the same angle but its now bigger.
it doesnt take much to affect the idle air flow speed..

look at this picture , the jam nut on the idle screw is located on the bottom left and right of the TB.

hope thats help to understand ;)

So, I'm assuming you just adjust the idle screw until your idle is the same as it is set in uprev?

you will need to adjust the idle screw which look to be locktighted very strongly btw.

then if you know what you are doing with the tune. you wont have any problem

again,
I prefer to mention it often, you need a different intake setup other than OEM because you MUST have a bigger intake tube especialy the MAF tube. if you arent doing it right , boring a TB to his maximun as I did , you wont get much of any gain
this is boring 2.5mm out , cut the shaft in half , flush screws , arrow edged butterfly plate.

edit again ,,, if you dont have a very good flowing exhaust ... forget about this mod ! ,,

i wonder if my current intake/exhaust set-up meets the requirements you mentioned for actual gains from a TB bore.....hmmm lol

i know my intakes are larger than stock and i believe larger than G3's so i should be good.

I think you'll see a gain no matter what you have. But like a tune the biggest gain will be if you do it vs not do it and you just put parts on. Better the setup the better the gain.

well a tune would be done no matter what.

Thought I'd get some befores going :)

Lots need done. And clearly the last two owners did not have a catch can like me. These things have oil and black tar build up galore! Hell just cleaning might net a horse power or two haha.

This is everything on just one side.

good stuff

this make me remember of the same projects over 1-3 years ago
I just looked at the picture I had about smoothing up the edge in Nov 2011 and porting in Dec 2012
damn time goes fast as we get older :icon14:

it seem like you are now the guy (not a shop) who will dyno test different part on the VHR engine ! I mentioned it before there is still quite a bit to be gained on the N/A side with the stock engine.
Keep up the result coming !
I might switch those VVEL heads back ! lol....

( Click to show/hide )
*just kidding about those VVEL crap*

edit; btw just a headup,, on the first picture , look inside and to the left, I remember I made it smoother going to the front intake runner... there is quite a bit of plastic that can be removed,,,, it wont hurt ;)

on the 4-5-6th pictures, that small bump close to the inlet can be grined down almost flat but not to much (90% flat)

TB to mani and mani to lower no. They're rubber. Lower to head yes. I would as I'm sure they're crushed steel ones.
