Best way to go for power/tq and little noise?

What's everyone's opinion on the best mod to exhaust and intake to get the best bang-for-the-buck in terms of power increase (and sound but not overbearingly loud) while still maintaining the ability to pass smog inspections (I'm in Texas if you're figuring that into it)?

Catback exhaust and intake only? What type of power/torque increases can I expect there?

Ideas welcome!

If you want to stay quiet & pass emissions then you will want to keep your stock cats.
So that means no high flow cats, no test pipes, etc..

You didn't mention the type of car that you have, but im going to assume base or sport 370z.

Intakes yield good gains. K&N dropins + MAF Tubes = 16whp compared to Stillen g3s 18whp

QUIETER EXHAUSTS with gains:
Fast Intentions 18" Resonator
Stilen Catback
CNT Catback
Nismo Exhaust

if you're worried about noise then i would start with motordyne intake manifold, filter drop in, maf tube, and invidia exhaust, pulleys can get added to the list too.

Mine is a new 2013 370Z with sport package. Thanks for the info!

Anyone have a recommended combo of intake and exhaust that work well together, create some power/throttle-response gains, and don't create a ton of noise? I want throaty/beefy exhaust just not like some you hear that are obnoxiously loud.

What!?!? No HFCs in Texas!?!? I'm in GA right now and I will be headed to TX in a couple weeks. I have Berk HFCs and people from Texas said they pass emissions test with the HFCs. I've even heard of people in California passing emissions with HFCs even though they are supposedly not allowed there.

Good mod, but where did you pull that number from?

Probably from dynos online.

I have seen anywhere from 14whp-16whp from those mods

@OP I would do drop in filters and MAF tubes and see if you can find a nismo 370z exhaust(not the s tune one, the one off a nismo) you can expect at least 290whp 260wtq from mods like that tuned, untuned you will probably see 280whp 250wtq

Drop in filters and maf tubes are pretty popular around here but how is it pulling those numbers. That's as good as the stillen and takeda cai! Someone explain this to me! As far as exhaust I would say either berk or f.i. they're pretty awesome.

The M2 CBE I have on my Base Model Z is outstanding for both sound and durability. The thickness of the metal is great because I dropped my Z 1.5inches, and take railroad crossings like a maniac. There is a hollow metal reservior between the mufflers (can't see it in the pic, sorry) and it completely eliminates obnoxious idle noise - I LOVE IT!!! Not sure about it's affects on my performance as I am a n00b :icon17:

The Weapon R short ram intake with SPECTRE filters and couplers (so everything could be red) has given me a noticeable kick off the line, and push at higher RPMs at the top of both 2nd and 3rd gear.

Exhaust - $350.00
Intake - $325.00
Air Filters - $25.00 per

Because those number aren't accurate.

Manufacturer dyno result:
Nissan 09-11 370Z 3.7L HPS Blue Silicone Air Intake Hose Post MAF Tube

Coupled with filters, should be getting around 10whp (I'm being generous) if you don't have any other mods. Like I said previously it's a great mod, I used to roll with Z1 tubes and k&n filters until I switched to g3's. If you want to stay quiet it is certainly the way to go.

Sorry to bump this :( attached is what I was referring to earlier (hollow metal reservior between the mufflers - works great to keep idle noise low).

Is that part of a catback you bought or is it something you had done custom?

You will fail emissions if you dont have your normal cats on or depending which HFC you have. I think you need like a 600cell to pass. Good news is you only have to do emissions ONCE. Put your stock cats back in for when you get to Texas. Pass emissions, register your car and you won't ever need to do it again. All cars 2002 and newer, as long as you dont have a SES light on you will pass as long as all your safety stuff is compliant too.

Some people may not quantify the FI exhaust w/ 18" resonators as "quiet". It is probably the louder of the options listed above. Don't get me wrong, I have this exact setup with stock cats and stock intakes and I love the sound, but my wife can hear my car on a cold start two stories above our underground parking garage.

This exhaust system is prolific enough that you should have little trouble finding another member in your area that has a similar setup and then you can judge for yourself.

If you buy it and later decide you dont like it, then it is easy to re-sell too.
