stillen exhaust question

okay i have my stillen exhaust installed. at first i was hitting the crossmember so i lifted the car back up and adjusted. now i clear the cross member but for the sway bar im not sure if im hitting it i look under neat when the car was back on the ground and theres about 1/2 inch space from sway to exhaust touching. my question is will they touch each other when i hit a speed bump or a pot hole like when the springs compress?

I'd like to find out as well. I just ordered the Stillen High Flow Cat and the Cat back exhaust. Did you notice a difference n sound/throttle response/power?

Bump

Yeah, I took a piece of tire tread that we cut into a nice square and stuck it between the cross member and exhaust. That was the only way to get the exhaust from rattling. The fit and finish isn't the best.

I had a Bassani exhaust on my 350z that cleared about the same about and it would hit going down the highway on sharp bumps and on some other bumps so I'm gonna guess yes. Mine especially did it when the bumps got a rythme going and it would just start knocking and actually started denting the exhaust.

specialk, think about it this way, your sways are bolted to the frame so it won't move, but your exhaust is hanging off rubber hangers (which is kinda like a spring) so it could bounce a little depending on how deep the pothole is and how fast u drive into it or how fast u go over the speed bumps or whatever that will cause ur car to bounce. so yes u do have the potential to hit it.

Just installed the Stillen exhaust at Mondo Car Repair in Twinsburg, and I have the same problem with rattling against the crossmember. It must have sagged a little since when the car was up we had at least 1/2 inch of clearance. Anyone have any suggestions? I read in this link someone used tire rubber. Isn't going to melt?

BTW, two of the factory nuts - one on each side, on the front of the factory cat were installed incorrectly by the factory. The nuts weren't on straight and were a bitch to loosen. My mechanic broke several bits trying to get them loose. Limited clearing around the front top of the cat did not help either, but he got it done eventually.

**UPDATE**

Rattle drove me nuts, so I bought some hose clamps, similar to the ones that tighten your stock intake tubes but a little larger, and lifted the back of my exhaust (near the flange right before the muffler on the left-hand side and also around the exhaust tube on the right-hand side) just a tad. I used the cross support bar as a lifting point. No more rattle under heavy acceleration or when hitting bumps. I could not be happier! :D

I plan on adding a pair around the middle support rubbers as well, just in case. Anyone know if lifting the exhaust on the rear sway bar will cause any issues? The full weight won't be hanging on the sway bar.

Too bad that when you spent $2,000 on an HFC, exhaust and installation, you have to resort to $1 hose clamps to get it installed properly. Followed all directions and had room to spare after install. Oh well, I'm happy now.

This is how i fixed the exhaust hitting the cross member. I used two stainless steel hose clamps. I have now plenty of spacing and no more rattles.

Okay - pics did not attach for some reason - maybe it's the size. Will try to post the pics in a little bit.

Here we go::excited:
