$780 to install G3 intake

Thinking about what to do with some of the income tax refund, calling around and found a shop that sells and installs stillen components.

Long story short he quoted me $525 for the G3 intake plus $255 to install, 3 hours labor. I could do it myself but its to damn cold up here right now, plus this shop is owned by a Nissan dealership. I've been to shop and have seen some of his work. Looks real clean. The total would be $780, should I or shouldn't I,

Just want opinions if I'm getting riped off.

Also, looking to get a stillen exhaust installed probably sometime in April, right in time for spring.

Thanks

Man, save the coin. I did my install in less time than that... Should only take a shop that has done it before 1-1.5 hours tops. If its too cold, just go out for 5-10 mins at a time and take breaks

You're getting ripped off. The shop being owned by a Nissan dealership also suggests they price gouge.

edub370 02-06-2013 04:42 PM

that is a TERRIBLE price

Jasonle 02-06-2013 04:44 PM

Just do it yourself. It doesnt take 3 hrs to install an intake. You should be able to do it in roughly a hr n 1/2. Bumper takes bout 20ish mins....less if youve done it before. Dremelling out the hole maybe another 20 mins and installing intake about 45ish mins with removing the engine brace. Just buy urself a portable heater. Haha this is not hard to do.

dastaco 02-06-2013 04:48 PM

I laughed out loud at 3 hours. I assume for that amount of time they don't have tools and will do it all by hand.

RUFFSTUFF 02-06-2013 04:52 PM

NO! DO IT YOURSELF.

It is pretty easy.

mikeSS 02-06-2013 04:53 PM

wait tell spring and install them....

Spikuh 02-06-2013 04:54 PM

Do it yourself. Unless you make $80+ an hour (in which case why do you care about $255? :p), don't waste the money.

Yeah I did mine in 3-4 hours by hand using an adjustable wrench for half of it until I came to the cross brace removal. Didn't jack the car up for the bumper either. Then I went out to get proper tools. First time installing anything on any car outside of maintenance stuff. 3 hours? They'd have to be the most incompetent shop ever. Should be a 1 hr job if they know what they are doing.

Dlm6568 02-06-2013 05:11 PM

Wow thanks for all the input, yea I think I will till spring and do it myself. I found the install DYI anD will study it for my "test"

Thanks again!

That sounds like my own personal hell... 3 hours with an adjustable wrench. :wtf2:

Agreed, do it yourself or if you want to take it to a shop swimg by Real Auto Dynamics in oceanside, NY. Its like an 1/1.5 hour install for them

NFSZ86 02-06-2013 05:42 PM

That's a rip off man don't do it, I did it my self in the middle of jan. I live in Chicago il so u can imagine how was the weather. Anyhow I went to Home Depo and rent me a blower heater for like 80dollars and did it myself in less then 2hours the DIY thread I wish I can give u the link explains detail by detail on how to do it. Gd luck and don't go to the shop if u can.

Cmike2780 02-06-2013 05:52 PM

Installation should be half that price. Even the intake is pretty much what Stillen charges. They even had a sale last month. I'd PM FB Nissan and see if he can give you a better deal.

Or take a trip to Maine, ill do it for free!

The industry standard is beer and pizza.

The difficulty in installing cold air intakes is relatively low, as anyone who can turn a wrench the right way could install these. Just make sure you have plenty of time and patience when doing it. Same goes with removing/reinstalling the front bumper. For someone who has done it before it could take a few minutes.. but for a first timer, it could be confusing. Also make sure not to overtighten the MAF sensor when swapping them over to the Stillens, those screw/bolts are super fragile.

I'm too lazy to DIY. Let the professionals do it. Lou Roc from Amplified Motorsports did it for way less.

Diys are fun and rewarding knowing you can do it. I hope that installation fee comes with Kay Y Jelly and an anal beginners kit because that booty hole gona hurt. For that type of cash you can get yourself a shift knob, fog light, harness, Gtr start button, weather tech custom floor mats.

I've down CAI installs on both my BMW 330ci and my Acura TL, but neither one required removal of the bumper. That's really muy only concern.

RUFFSTUFF 02-08-2013 07:35 AM

It is surprisingly easy to remove the bumper. It's like Nissan said "Hey, someone is going to shove a filter in here, let's just put some bolts and stuff to hold it together."

:iagree: I have taken my bumper off probably 10 times now. The first time took like 30 minutes. Now it takes like 10 :icon17:

I thought the same thing, I was a little apprehensive the first time I did it, now Im like, this isnt sh1t..haha:bowrofl:

tturbo370z 02-08-2013 07:01 PM

I checked with a local dealer in the same intake and install and they said they same 3hours crap and $1000! I'm with everyone else to do it yourself. Get some beer and a buddy who is also handy and make an afternoon out of it :icon18:

RUFFSTUFF 02-08-2013 07:18 PM

On second thought... That sounds very reasonable... If I was the local dealer...

If you do not feel confident on what to do, let pros do it. We pay for peace of mind. Just my 2 cents..
