HFC Cel Info

We've gotten a lot of questions lately about our HFC's and test pipes causing CEL lights to come on. This is an older thread from MyG37 but it should help answer some of your questions or concerns.

HFC CEL poll - MyG37

how much wheel hp and tq do they give on a stillen exhaust ?

Junior370z 06-25-2009 11:01 PM

I've put about 800 miles on my Berk HFC's and have not had any cels. (knock on wood) I've been diconnecting the negative side of the battery because of installs of some form or another. I don't know if that helps keep the cel from coming on though, maybe just coincident.

We havn't dynoed our HFC's with a Stillen exhaust but we have seen gains of up to 18whp with our HFC's on a stock exhaust. If anyone else on this forum has dynoed there car with this set up please chime in

I have Berk HFC's & Stillen Exhaust & Intake....I'm going back to Altered Atmosphere next Friday (July 3rd) and having a dyno done. I'll post up the results.

wstar 06-26-2009 02:59 PM

My Berk HFCs have been on for about 5,500 miles so far (with Stillen headers in front of them to boot) without throwing any CEL.

Awesome! how do you like the set up so far?

M.Bonanni 06-26-2009 03:01 PM

I have had the Berk HFCs on for almost 5000 miles as well without a CEL. :D

It's great! I've had quite a few double takes when I pass.....that's always fun! I can feel the difference as well. It's made me not want to get out of the drivers seat.....I just want to keep driving past work!

(Then again, most people would problably still want to go past work even without the mod's!) :p

Any members on here with the test pipe throw cels, as I am about to put them on my car in the next couple of weeks and wonder if I could just go with the non-fouler (not sure on spelling) method right away to stop from throwing cels??

DannyGT 06-26-2009 06:46 PM

I had the test pipes for a ~2-3k miles with no CEL! (CEL was on initially (~150miles) but cleared itself and never came back on) That was great!

ssqpolo 06-26-2009 08:29 PM

i have berk test pipes and my service engine light came on after 600 miles. then i cleared it and after hard driving one random day it came back on. sooo i dunno. i just clear it with my 200 dollar code reader i bought from autozone. so its not a problem for me.

BerkTech 06-27-2009 02:28 PM

We have seen mixed results with the test pipes... some cars throw a cell and some don't... but with our HFC's 85% of the cars don't throw a cell

Went to Altered Atmosphere again today. It's been about 2 weeks since I had the Berk HFC's and Stillen Dual Exhaust & Intake installed. Here are the two dynos:

Pure Stock Dyno performed on 13 June 09:

Dyno performed on 01 July 09 (includes Berk HFC's, Stillen Dual Exhaust & Intake):

I'm not tech saavy at all....so is this the expected increase or not enough or more?

semtex 07-01-2009 08:23 PM

That second one doesn't look right. There's no graph. Like there are no lines.

Yeah, I noticed that when they gave it to me but I didn't think to queston it. I was there by the car when they dynoed it this afternoon but that was the report they gave me. I expected to see the graph. I'll be heading back to get my coilovers installed in a few weeks....maybe get another dyno and this time if there isn't a graph ask them about it?

Actually . . . you see the little box in the upper left corner? See how in the first chart it's in two shades of blue that correspond to the color of the lines? Now look at the second chart. The box is white. I wonder if the lines are actually there, but in white. And of course, white on white -- can't see it! Ask them if they can email you the .drf files. If they can, I can process them for you in DynoJet software and hopefully change the color so that the lines show up. PM me if you can get a hold of the .drf files.

6MT 07-01-2009 08:46 PM

I see that most of the posts regarding this issue are using the Berk HFC's. Has anyone using the Stillen HFC's had the same CEL problems on a 370?

Cool! I'll send a message to Jon @ Altered along with the pdf of the dyno so he can see what the issue is. I'll let you know if I get the file.

Ya, that graph (or lack of a graph) just doesn't look right.

Just going by the max numbers, it was approximately a 20 hp gain and 14 tq gain, which also doesn't seem right. Most people are seeing that with just 1 of the mods, and are more like 40+ hp to the wheels increase with 3.

6MT 07-02-2009 11:07 AM

Anyone....Anyone...?

6MT, I'm not sure I understand your question. You want to know if anyone with Stillen HFCs has had the same CEL problems on a 370Z. But I'm not aware of anyone who has gotten a CEL on their 370 with the Berk HFCs. So . . . I guess I don't get what you mean by the "same CEL problems" as there doesn't seem to be any such problem. The only one who has gotten a CEL is ssqpolo, but he's running test pipes, not HFCs.

6MT 07-02-2009 03:41 PM

OK, I just assumed by reading all the posts that it was the HFC's causing the problem. Maybe the thread should have been titled "Berk Test Pipes" causing CEL issues.

Thanks for clarifying that.

I'm about to have the Stillen HFC and CBE installed this Friday. So excited! Any issues with your set-up so far? Any CEL issues? How's the sound and your impression of the power gains? I see you also have the GEN II intake and sway bars installed. That's exactly the set-up I am looking for.

Thought I might share this info:

CobbTuning.com - Nissan AccessPORT Firmware 1.4.0.0

On the new AccessPort firmware, code P0420 (Catalyst Efficiency Code) is defeated for Stage 2 and Stage 2+ maps. I guess this means when they do release a Stage 2 or Stage 2+ map for the 370Z, we will never have to worry about the CEL from HF cats. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like this is what it means.

Caravanshaka 07-30-2009 06:20 AM

fyi, put on Berk HFC's last Saturday and no CEL, not even before an ECU reset

JvKintheUSA 08-01-2009 03:26 AM

Okay, had my Stillen cat back exhaust and Stillen HFC installed yesterday, and so far so good, when it comes to CEL (knock on wood). I disconnected the battery prior to the installation, to clear the ECU. If i ever throw a CEL, I will post.
