ARK HFC...still have "hiss"

Just wanted to put this out there. Nothing else wrong with the HFC, but the thing is they really marketed that they put a lot of research into eliminating the hiss that comes with aftermarket cats/test pipes on our cars.

Now I have never heard the infamous "hiss" in person other than on my own car, so maybe the ARK HFC hiss sounds better in comparison to other options. But for my car, when I am decelerating in gear it sounds almost identical to a car that desperately needs new brake pads. I am not talking about squeaky brakes, but rather I am referring to that scratching noise where it sounds like metal is scraping on metal. That's what it sounds like when I let off the gas, especially in 2nd or 3rd gear.

Can anybody else with the ARK hfc chime in?

NeverBoneStck 07-08-2012 11:54 AM

So are u saying u have their new HFC and u believe u have the hiss ? Should be interesting ..

Yup, definitely think I have hiss

WAGAWAGA 07-08-2012 01:37 PM

Not sure what you are talking about. I just went for a drive to locate this hiss sound on my hfc and i couldn't hear any. I think it'll be more helpful if you can record the hiss. And do you have the hfc with stock cbe?

One_Quick_Z 07-08-2012 02:18 PM

No matter what aftermarket exhaust you put on your Z/G you will have some sort of Hiss its the nature of the beast.

So basically there a waist?

fryzia23 07-11-2012 03:41 PM

anybody else has any updates on this? I'm very interested to hear more opinions

chrisbeltre 07-11-2012 05:13 PM

I will be installing mine next week, I'll add to the thread then. Team ARK, would you care to add to the thread as well?

babbagandu 07-11-2012 08:34 PM

Tried taking a video but it was very hard to hear in the video.

I want to point out that after making this thread I think I might have a tiny exhaust leak or something so maybe that is what caused the sound to start when I added the HFC. I am gonna get it checked out this weekend so I will update then. (I might have no idea what I'm talking about so someone correct me if this is unlikely)

Also I wanna add that it after listening to the sound more it has kinda grown on me and the more I listen to it the more I think it sounds badass rather than sounding like bad brakes which I said earlier. So if it is actually just from the HFC then I don't think it's a big deal

Dude I think I know what you mean. I just installed LTHs over the weekend and the hiss on decel and certain shifts was interesting and has definitely grown on me. I think it sounds really mean. And to the untrained ear mine sounds like the whistle of a turbo. I have had 3 people ask me since install if I was turbo'd. So far I am the only one I have seen with the ark grip 2 and fi lths

WAGAWAGA 07-13-2012 01:40 AM

^audio clip, that combo sounds very interesting

NuffZed 07-13-2012 02:08 AM

Stillen HFCs and cat back exhaust installed Saturday July 7. Definitely has the hiss as well as a really nice burble and pop too. This has added a ton of personality to the car in my mind. I like a car that talks to you. On a roadster it sounds fantastic.

There ya go. Sorry it took so long I had a few minor kinks to work out.

This is just a teaser. I plan on doing full reviews and using some nice recording equipment soon.

Hi Im Vinh 08-11-2012 06:21 PM

Just finished installing Ark's HFC onto our already ARK grip catback equipped car, the "hiss" sound is there after the install of the HFC. A little bit disappointed in Team Ark's advertising of their product, they should state that the "hiss" is lessened to an extent.

Either way Ark needs to step up on their game and explain what is going on with this product that cost a pretty penny.

Hi Im Vinh 08-13-2012 06:04 PM

Anyone experiencing a CEL with the ARK hfc's installed?

fryzia23 08-13-2012 07:02 PM

Which Ark exhaust do you have? grip v2 or the prototype?

Hi Im Vinh 08-14-2012 09:17 AM

Ark Grip before the revision

WAGAWAGA 08-15-2012 12:41 PM

Hi im Vinh, i am experiencing the smae thing. Alex at ARK told me we just need to get a cel fix.

TeamARK 08-15-2012 01:22 PM

we have a L bend Cel fix that will remedy this issue.

Since my car got rear ended couple weeks ago and my ark grip got bent I bought the v2 and I can tell you the hiss is A LOT less noticeable like its almost not there. I was actually shocked how much less of a hiss v2 produces. I have cnt hfc and Im sure with ark hfc hiss would be completely eliminated with grip v2.

I already ordered the CEL fix off ebay for $8 a piece

You will always have hiss with the VQ engines. Some say it is the design of the exhaust and flowing more air when you add HFC,TP, or LTH. The pressure is trying to be equalized at the X,Y,H pipe for whichever design you have. The Nismo exhaust I know seem to not have it as the other designs cuz it is an H pipe. The other is when you take off the stock cats and put on the HFC's the walls on them are thinner than stock allowing the sound to escape. Whichever theory you believe the sound is here to stay. I am guessing since ARK put out a HFC stating it eliminates hiss that they used thicker walls to lessen the volume of the hiss. I would hate to know they reduced the flow of air to reduce the sound of the hiss.

SnooPPP 08-31-2012 01:39 AM

I have the ARK HFCs with the Ark Dual Grip Exhaust V1 and I still have the hiss as well. It wasn't as bad as when I had my CNT Test Pipes on, but it's definitely still there. Kind of mad that ARK was heavily advertising that the hiss was gone and even when I called them they assured me there would be no hiss.

I did throw a CEL after about a week of driving with the HFCs. I went to Z Car Garage in San Jose for an uprev tune and of course it's gone now forever though. On another note, I had the experts at Z Car Garage look over the hissing noise. The guys tried to fix the noise for a couple hours free of charge because the noise was bugging the owner (the guys are awesome), but to no avail.

Navyboy916 08-31-2012 01:47 AM

I have the ark exhaust with berk hfc's and I have the hiss as well

Hi Im Vinh 09-01-2012 07:48 PM

Did anyone's car throw a P2A00 ( main o2 reading too rich/lean) after installing the HFC ?

shurik355 08-22-2015 07:14 PM

bringing this back to life. But is it worth getting the ARK HFCs? Is the Hiss everyone talking about perhaps not as bad as in other HFCs? Has anyone tried or heard other HFCs before the ARK???

Zoren 370 08-22-2015 08:38 PM

I do run with ArK hFC and ARK grip full exhausts with burnt tip. I hardly hear any hiss or I just grown to love that deep growling sound of the exhausts that I would care less about it.

Worth every penny IMO.

Btw i did have CEL with the HFC but that is why you need a good tune to solve that CEL.
Been running it for years no issues with CEL on.

jcosta79 08-22-2015 08:57 PM

I have the ARK test pipes and I highly recommend them. Have had them for about 1.5 years with 0 problems. Very solid pieces and well designed. With the right exhaust (I have Invidia Gemini) you wont hear any hiss.

Zoren 370 08-22-2015 10:13 PM

Jcosta Im actually I'm thinking of switching to ARK test pipe. How was the sound and acceleration?

shurik355 08-22-2015 11:14 PM

Zoren did the CEL light ever pop up with your ARK HFCs? Im leaning toward them at this moment.

Zoren 370 08-22-2015 11:25 PM

^ yes it did ... But that is expected as you open up your exhaust.
Been driving with it for years never had any issue. Car still runs great!
You need to have a tune if you want to get rid of it. Plus you get the best performance out of your mods with a tune.

yeahh I know about it the tune. Was just wondering about the CEL light. I had a G37 before the Z and I went through exactly the same thing. HFCs hiss, CEL light.
Although I did manage to get rid of the CEL after some time with the angled fouler. I tried everything else with steel wool and short foulers, nothing was permanent but the angled one really got rid of the CEL once and for all. So I guess i might do the same with the Z.

I had the test pipes first with the stock Nismo exhaust and then I purchased the Invidia cat back. You don't really hear too much of a difference with the stock exhaust. Test pipes and tune made quite a difference in acceleration and responsiveness, but the Invidia cat back really woke the car up in the low to mid range area as well as significantly improving the quality and volume of the sound.
